The village of Hamsterley sits on the brow of a hill between Teesdale and Weardale, on the edge of the North Pennines. Boasting an old village pub, where basic provisions can be purchased, the village is just two miles from Hamsterley Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which covers 2000 hectares of mixed woodland and has an abundance of wildlife. The Forest Visitor Centre, complete with tea rooms, provides visitors with a wealth of information on the many activities available in the forest, including splendid walking, cycling and horse riding trails to suit all levels of expertise. Cycling enthusiasts will be well catered for with the Hamsterley Forest mountain bike downhill trail which has some of the steepest slopes in the UK, together with miles of cross country routes. The forest runs alongside the Bedburn Beck for four miles, providing access to grassy picnic sites and a play area for children, and also stages a wide range of events and activities every summer, from wildlife watches to theatre performances, and the Dark Skies Events are coming to the forest, with introductions to astronomy from trained instructors. With Raby Castle nearby and the delightful market town of Barnard Castle, with its medieval castle ruins and delightful cobbled streets, just 8 miles away, this is an ideal holiday location. The ancient cathedral city of Durham is also close by and is host to a number of events throughout the year so it is well worth checking what you can see while you are in the area.

We have had an amazing week at this beautiful, spotless cottage.. It was so good we did not want to leave!! I have never stayed at a more homely cottage. The owners made us feel so welcomed by there attention to detail and delicious homemade cake!! The kitchen is more equipped than mine at home and I must say the shower is better than all the hotels I’ve been to. My kids loved making friends with the owners horse and giant rabbit! Most of all it got my teenage son off his Xbox and enjoying nature!!!!! We will definitely be returning.

Lovely place.. In superb condition, very clean. Made a point of ringing to tell us that there was loads of food- and there was. Even a bottle of wine. The views from all the windows are superb. Road is very quiet and the house is totally silent. Only possible negative- A bit too warm at night and not really possible to control the heating or we could not work it out. All in all a lovely place to stay.

This cottage was fabulous and exceeded the pictures and descriptions, from start to finish we had an excellent stay.. The cottage is comfortable, clean and has everything you could think of to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. The welcome pack is such a treat to arrive to from the wine to the mince pies(my favourite). You could arrive with just your clothes and live comfortably for a few days with all the supplies and groceries that are in the cupboard and fridge. The underfloor heating was a delight at this time off year and made the cottage so cosy. Our 2 year old loved Jimmy the horse in the field adjacent to the cottage and the owners family who live next door made us so welcome to visit her horses and the lovely white rabbit. Would defo recommend this cottage and planning our next stay for next year.

Bedrooms good size and really comfortable.Kitchen has everything you can think of.Lounge is a great place to relax with excellent views over fields with bird visitors of numerous varieties at the feeding posts. Such a lovely place and amazing value for your money!

Great accommodation, fantastic cottage with everything (and more) that you need for a self catering holiday. Stayed for a long weekend to visit Beamish and Durham. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very well equipped, full of all mod cons, really was a home from home, you won't want for nothing here. A welcome pack was left for us on arrival, along with a home baked cake (which was lovely, thank you very much) The location is in beautiful countryside and very, very peaceful. Probably the best cottage we have stayed in (everything considered) and will definitely return. Couldn't find fault with the cottage at all, can highly recommend to anyone who wants to stay in County Durham, a real credit to the owners. Thanks for a wonderful stay.
April 2018
The cottage was impeccably clean and the welcome pack amazing, including the lovely home-made chocolate cake! Views were amazing from the windows and patio. We enjoyed watching the birds, sheep, pheasants, a barn owl and also the little stoat that ran across the patio. Hamsterley forest is virtually on the doorstep and we enjoyed the walks. If there was any downside for me, it would be that I found the topper on the bed very lumpy and not so comfortable. Having said that, I would definately book again.
February 2018
Property was fantastic in both facilities and location.. The owners went above and beyond in their welcome pack with an abundance of goodies and provisions including a delicious home made chocolate cake. The tranquil setting surrounded by countryside and wildlife is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Can't recommend South Byre enough but I was tempted to give it an awful review so as to keep it a secret for a lucky few!
December 2017
Fantastic place to spend a few quiet days. Well equipped and Carol attentive to every request. Well stocked with food made for a very pleasant stay in a warm, cosy cottage. Would definitely return for more spoiling! The snow which fell added to the outdoor scenery. Horses in the field outside the cottage and sheep grazing on the hills. Lovely setting fast outside a small village about 5 miles from Bishop Auckland. Ideal for a stay with dogs or children.
December 2017
There is very little not to like about this accommodation.. Lovely and warm inside from the under floor heating on a particularly cold snap in November, the area is quiet with some lovely views from the windows.Everything you could really need for a relaxing holiday or short break is provided, and a lovely welcome pack of bread milk, butter, etc. I would like to return maybe in a warmer month.

March 2015
The cottage was brilliantly equipped, immaculately cleaned, and the welcome provisions were generous and much appreciated. The view from the lounge window was beautiful, the area was stunning and there were great opportunities to walk and relax. It was close enough to Durham that we could get into the centre in half an hour.
February 2015
Out of all the cottages we have stayed in over the past 20 years or so, this is undoubtedly the most impressive. The cottage is quiet, warm, spacious, has amazing views, and is situated in a very good spot for visiting the beautiful Durham dales, and even further afield. But the most eye-catching fetaure was the welcome pack, which went way beyond the necessary, and offered an incredible array of foods - absolutely wonderful, and congratulations to the very helpful owners who sorted out our single problem immediately (a problem which had been caused by the previous week's visitors).
Mrs Bonner
November 2014
The cottage is in a lovely spot and is very clean, warm and comfortable. The 'Welcome Pack' is amazing and it is clear that the owners are excellent hosts and wish all their visitors, young and old, to have a really good time at South Byre. This was our second visit and I am sure it will not be our last.
Mr Evans
September 2014
This was our third stay at this property. It continues to provide the excellent standard that we required for a peaceful, relaxing and non-intrusive holiday. The accommodation is spotless and the welcome pack is something that has to be seen to be believed. The accommodation is set in a quiet rural setting in a beautiful part of the country. The owners live nearby but unless you need any help they let you get on with your holiday. The only visitors you will get are the hens and a horse. We are already looking at dates to book for next year.
Ms Spiers
September 2014

Spent a very enjoyable week in this lovely cottage. It is warm and comfortable and the owners have provided everything you could need or want. There is a very generous welcome pack including delicious homemade cake. The location is perfect for enjoying beautiful views over the countryside and there are interesting places to visit within a short drive. There are also good eating places around the area. This is definitely a place I would be happy to go back to.

Excellent property, even cleaner than my own home! Very helpful owner. Would definitely recommend the property to friends or family.
December 2013
This cottage exceeded our expectations, located in a very peaceful area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Modern and clean and fresh and with a welcome pack to beat all others including a delicious homemade cake. We did not meet the owners who lived in the farmhouse next door but contact details were there if needed in an information pack. Recommended and would hope to return in the future.

This was our second stay in this lovely cottage. Once again the standard of cleanliness and furnishings were excellent. The setting of this property gives you a peace and tranquillity which for people like us, who lead very hectic lives gave us exactly what we needed. Although the owners live near by they are not intrusive but are on hand if you require help or advice.
