The amenities of Isle of Whithorn are on the doorstep of Smuggler's Den, with opportunities for sea fishing, golf, walking and exploring the book town of Wigtown, making this a wonderful year-round couples' retreat.

Although it is no longer an island the village of Isle of Whithorn still retains the name as a link to its historic past. The village lies by the harbour on the southern tip of the Machars Peninsula, and the area has been designated as an outstanding conservation area. The village has a rich history, and trading from the port dates back to Viking times and there are the remains of a 13th Century chapel at the end of the harbour. This region is steeped in ancient and modern history and there are countless sites of historical interest to visit, from Iron Age and Mesolithic Forts to standing stones. This area is a fascinating region and makes a great base for a family holiday.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Self-Catering Reviews

We were a little concerned about holidaying regarding Covid-19, however we shouldn't have worried, Smugglers Den was immaculately clean and Covid secure.. A well equipped and beautifully situated apartment with views across the harbour. Perfect for a relaxing really "away from it all" holiday.

The location is perfect for those who wish to be by the coast & close to some wonderfully wild coastal scenary.. We loved the on-site reserved parking (useful after a day out in the Galloway countryside). The apartment was spotless on arrival. Just odd little issues (such as no bath-mat) stopped this from being the best ever Sykes property that we have stayed in.

Fantastic views and position on the harbour wall.. All the little extras provided treats bowls and towel for the dogs, milk biscuits tea coffee for us on arrival. Owner on hand if any problems .Great for the dogs morning /evening walks runs. Pub meals next door great don't think we cooked a meal. Very quite remote village but that is what we wanted walks spectacular.

Would have been useful to have had a bigger freezer compartment to save continual shopping..

Wonderful views over harbour which is fascinating watching the wildlife and the locals pottering about with their boats.. Great place to walk dog. Lovely and peaceful except for pub below a bit noisy in evenings but if you are a people watcher it's ideal! Great bolt hole for exploring the variety of beaches nearby. Owner super helpful and friendly even my dog had a welcome gift !

We had a lovely break here and knew there was no wifi which was stated but just so people are aware there is no phone signal either and you have to travel about 7 miles to get one.. We were on the 3 network and apparently you fare better if you're on Vodafone. However, if you're looking for complete peace and quiet this is the place to go. The flat was spotless and had great views, I personally found the bed a bit firm but that's a personal preference thing. On the whole I would recommend this flat. Great for dogs.

Really nice apartment with great views.. Everything you need for your stay. Excellent shower, very clean. Very Comfortable bed duvet etc. The only downside was my weak will, combined to a pub next door!!

Really enjoyed our stay in Smuggler’s Den.. Janine had warned us that there is only one small shop nearby, so you do need to plan ahead if you want to cook. A nice small apartment with two windows overlooking the harbour – wonderful views and ideal for a bit of bird watching. Would have preferred a dishwasher to the washing machine!

It is a lovely area, to get away from it all.. Very peaceful, and quiet. Went fishing off the pier, only managed to catch a very small crab, which I duly returned. The apartment was lovely and clean, Janine the owner was very helpful, would have loved to have stayed on for a few more days, but all apartments were booked, maybe next time!

The apartment was spotlessly clean, we received a warm welcome on our arrival, the little extras were a nice touch, treats and a bowl for our dog, milk and chocolate biscuits for us.. clean good quality Towels, sheets and kitchen equipment etc all provided. accommodation is in an excellent position on the harbour front, through the parking spaces is a gate giving you access to the headland and a lovely short walk. Longer picturesque walks around the bay(great for the dog). The area only has one small shop so you need to plan ahead if you want to cook, bit both the pub and local cafe do takeaway, it is really friendly little place, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you Janine

We were originally booked at a different location.. Sykes contacted us to apologise some work was going to be carried out on the river beside the cottage which would be very noisy from 8.00 till 5.30 each day. The property owners did offer a discount but we felt that we would prefer not to have this interruptions on our holiday. Sykes asked us what we would prefer, but as it was only a month before our holiday , we asked if could they come up with options. They said they would send us a list of available options before the end of the day. By 7.30 the same evening we had a confirmed booking for Smugglers Den on the Isle of Whithorn over looking the harbour. The apartment was immaculate and in a superb position. There were two windows overlooking the harbour and wonderful views. There were lovely walks from the apartment and plenty of lovely spots to sit an admire the views. We were extremely lucky with wonderful weather, just a bit of rain and very strong winds in the late afternoon through to the next morning. A tall ship got blown over so we had the added enjoyment watching the local fishermen and a farmer try to pull it upright before the rapid rising tide would enter the ship. We both felt that this holiday couldn't have been improved in any way. Well done Sykes!

Lovely village and area.. There are beautiful views over the harbour from the flat. the pub/ restaurant is virtually next door to the accommodation. very pleasant and friendly. my only gripe about the flat (and i am aware it was probably a house of multiple occupation requirement!) are the self closing fire doors. Very heavy and a nuisance to open as one walked around the apartment. overall, a very pleasant apartment, comfortable and clean. lots to do in the area.

Me and my dog got a really warm welcome when we arrived, the apartment was comfortable and clean, and the view over the bay was beautiful. The pub next door serves good food and beer, and it is dog friendly as well. I would highly recommend the Smuggler's Den.

The flat was in a superb location, with a great view of the harbour and next door to the pub. We liked the 'get away from it all feeling,' rather like being on an island but able to get off at will. We were able to relax in a comfortable and clean flat which was suitable to our needs.
