It was really great, the only thing that could be improved is providing recycling bins and firewood in smaller size more suitable for the small woodburner (and/or supplying an axe).. Thanks!

The views towards the Black Mountains are exceptional especially the sunsets.. Rose cottage was very clean and well presented. The fresh flowers were a very nice touch and the welcome basket was thoughtfully stocked with excellent contents. The only small negative comment was the condition of the wooden spindle chair situated adjacent to the east wall of the cottage which suffered from loose joints on all four legs and the horizontal bracing struts. The bracing spindle attached to the front left leg became detached on the first day. I acquired some glue and made a temporary repair but the chair requires fixing properly to ensure no accidents occur in future.

No internet! Home hub instructions in property handbook, but just a phone socket in the wall! Otherwise very well provided for with supplies

The cottage and the surrounding area is lovely.. We've just completed our fourth time there within 2 years. There were a couple of minor issues that, when we reported them to Balfours, were communicated and dealt with well within our satisfaction. Balfours work really hard. Sadly the same cannot be said for Sykes. Having returned from a break in the cottage this time last year, I booked our breaks there for a week each in January and July this year. Their website wouldn’t allow me to make a minor amendment after I made a single date mistake. I had to ring them, lengthening the booking, whereby they hit me with a £38 amendment fee on top. Shortly after, I started receiving money-off offers (mainly £25, sometimes £40) for my next booking. I rang them again and asked if one could be applied to the bookings I’d already made, having just committed to over a thousand pounds over the two, they told me no. It’ll be no surprise then, that I told myself I’d never use them again.

An exceptional property, furnished to the highest standard with beautiful furnishings and great taste.. A great garden, wood for the woodburner, superb 360 degree views and parking easy. So close to Monmouth and dog walks on the doorstep. Very peaceful.

Our third time of visiting so we're obviously overly happy.. The cottage and it's location are lovely as ever. However the DVD remote still doesn't work - we first reported this on our first visit a year ago. The window blinds in the kitchen and bathroom have been removed but not replaced, - we used black bin bags. Also, still rather peeved about two things: Firstly, having booked (in July/Aug 19) this (Jan 20) and a future holiday in July 20, paying full price, I have constantly received emails from Sykes telling me I can have £20 or £40 off a future booking. I had 2 future bookings already made, our third and fourth with Sykes, but could not claim any discount. Second Peeve, when making those bookings online, I could make no amendment online meaning I had to ring Sykes, which cost me a £38 amendment fee. I will have paid over £1k on these two bookings alone but no chance of discount and the amendment fee was an insult on top. You tell me if I'm likely to use Sykes again????

The views from the cottage were beautiful, and the cottage was lovely and cosy, .... The views from the cottage were beautiful, and the cottage was lovely and cosy, just a couple of minor improvements would improve your stay ie a chest of draws in the bedroom instead of a dining table, also a little side table in the lounge for drinks by the fire, the sofa needs replacing as uncomfortable and scruffy, but all in all a lovely cottage in a beautiful area with woodland walk on your doorstep, bed very comfy a lovely welcome tray on arrival also great having a washing machine and dryer at hand would highly recommend this cottage,

We had a lovely relaxing holiday at this secluded cottage It had everything we needed.. It was warm and cosy and had a lovely comfortable bed Brought some feeders for the small tree in the garden and it was lovely to watch all the beautiful birds and we even had a woodpecker visit one day . Our dog loved the woods 5 minutes walk away. loved the welcome pack of cider crisps & welsh cakes and the flowers. It really felt like home . We liked the town of Monmouth which had plenty of shops and places to eat and a lovely river running through it . We came home feeling very chilled out and hope to come back soon. Thank you Mandy & Andy & Max

Hello, as hereto explained, we experienced the following: The dwelling is built like a 'dolls house' the first noticible element is the degree of still quietness that envelopes the place. To the rear of the property a display of a 'climbing rose'. There lies a field for sheep grasing. This is connected to more of the same. On the front side lies a local road used occasionaly, causing little disturbance it winds down with a gentle left slope trailing off through the wood circumnavigating the fields. Back from the front here the view gives way to sweeping views of the valley with elevated terain in the background. The cottage comprises of a stable door and at the rear another door which can open joined to another bolted down held ajar by two hooks, but the creeky noise caused requires the need for the supporting stone. Once inside the room has all manor of necessities. A welcome offer of herefordshire The glass hob is controlled by touch. A microwave is provided. A problem I would highlight here is the plates support, here only the dinner and not the side plates sit comfortably in the wooded recess. The latter handling causes a 'domino effect' with potential for breakage. The sink tap requires another washer to stop the constant drip escaping the fosset. The comfortable stylish seating is of Welsh taste. The woodburner designed for one log defuses sufficient heat. Upstairs a comfortable bed awaits with good mattress and two pillows The bed wear is of good quality and feel. A point here for the wardrobe which only accommodates enough wooden hangers for one. The blind comes with mention of privicy guaranteed but fails to understand that without the use of there is no other means to block out the early bright light streaming through the panes especially during the summer solstice. Now to the bathroom spacious, however the shower head cannot be secured to the rail and once turned on it can only tricle out starting cold then to intermitent hot water. If you open the valve too much the head flips and you are greeted by a spray of cold water drenching you, then reaching beyond. Outside, on the other side of the elevated lawn at the rear, there is a washing machine and dryer inside a padlocked store room with ample logs and kindling if need be. David Page

Rose Cottage is absolutely wonderful.. The design and facilities are just right, and the views are incredible. I will hope very much to have the opportunity to book this cottage again.

Cottage was warm and welcoming, soon got hang of wood burner stove.. Not used to induction hob and took long time to get hang oven as interpretation of icons missing (not all ovens are the same!) so more detail would be appreciated. Equally took time to find less used equipment like oven dishes and sharp vegetable knife. Big crockery mugs attractive but could do with occasional trip through dishwasher! Compost bin appreciated but no instructions as to where to put it when full. No recycling facility (but none locally either!) Warning as to very narrow approach lane might be helpful to some - not matter to us as we are used to them. These are minor niggles which did not detract from a very peaceful and relaxing stay.

Rose cottage is exactly as described.. We went away for a quiet romantic break to get away from the city. It's a cute cosy cottage perfect for two. We were greeted with a tray of a few welsh goodies and more than enough kindling and logs. The heating was generously set so it was also really warm without the fire. Rose cottage is on it's own, incredibly peaceful and quiet. Monmouth is really close for supplies and we spent 2 days hiking - Breacon Beacons and Wye Vally. There are guide books and maps in the cottage so we just picked some walks out of the books once we arrived. The bed is really comfy and the kitchen is well stocked with utensils/pans etc, we cooked every night. If you want a remote break to get away from everything I can really recommend staying here.

Lovely little cottage down a country lane, the views out of every window were outstanding and we fully relaxed during our three night New Year stay.. The cottage was clean, warm and very cosy and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a secluded break away...

The only complaint being a lack of WiFi.. The phone signal is very poor so WiFi is essential.

September 2018
I don't think you should describe this property as dog friendly, for the following reasons: • you expect dogs to stay downstairs, but there's no way of ensuring this! • the property is on an unlit, unpaved road, so you have to drive anywhere to walk a dog • there is little information about where local dog friendly eateries are, and as there's no Wi-Fi you can't research it!

This is an amazing cottage that has wonderful views from every window and door. It is away from any other houses down a pretty, narrow lane. The views are over the farmland with sheep and their lambs as well as over the surrounding countryside. In the evening we could even watch the sunset from the sitting room windows which was amazing and beautiful. It is very peaceful with the occasional vehicle going past. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet here and the fact that the cottage was so well equipped for a great stay. When we walked in we were met with a welcome tray with Welsh cider, Welsh beer, Kettle crisps and some Welsh cakes. There was also a vase of carnations on the table. The other useful thing was a cupboard with tea, sugar, flour, spices and oil that was very useful too. There was also hand soap and cleaning items if you needed them and bubble bath in the bathroom. The log basket was full for the log burner and also kindling and paper. While we were there it was too warm to use the wood burner. The fridge has a small freezer compartment which is great for icecreams etc. The cooker is easy to use and has a full oven. It is a very warm cottage and has under floor heating down stairs and radiators upstairs. In the lawned garden with wonderful views over the farm land there was a patio area with table chairs and sun loungers ,At the top of the garden was a building with a washing machine ,tumble drier , sink, logs and kindling. It was very well equipped with all you needed as well as hairdrier too. It is a delightful cottage to stay in and we really enjoyed our stay there. It is perfectly situated for exploring Gloucestershire, Monmothshire and Herofordshire. The bed was very comfortable and with three windows in the bedroom it had wonderful views too. The bathroom had views also over the fields too . One thing that was so useful was a basket filled with leaflets and some guide book of the local area and some maps which really helped to plan days out while we were there. There were also books to read and DVD's too if you needed them. The mobile phone signal was a little variable but by moving around the room or going into the garden you could get signal. Ther is a landline phone in the cottage if needed. While we were there we had wonderful sunny warm weather so visited a lot of castles, and houses there are, National Trust, English heritage and Welsh Cadw properties as well as others too. Some of the places we enjoyed were Usk castle ( a gem in a garden), Raglan castle, Chepstow castle, Grosmont castle, Skenfrith castle, White Castle, Tretower court and castle, Tredegar house , the Kymin and Clearwell caves too name a few amazing places. If you go into Monmouth it is worth seeing the Monow bridge and also to visit Pasty Heaven a wonderful shop in an alley on the way up from the Momow bridge on the left hand side. Their pasties are very tasty. For food shopping we used the Lidle at Monmouth which was close by. The parking is in the garden with a 5 bar gate across the drive in to the property. We would certainly recommend this delightful property if you can book it , as it is very popular and rightly so. It is one of the best holiday rentals that we have stayed at. If you visit the Cadw properties you can get a three day pass which saves you money. We did not discover this until we had visited several properties!!

Rose Cottage is probably the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in.. The cottage has been very tastefully modernised include every facility one could ever need. Nothing has been omitted. Others may have had problems with the shower we had none. Others may have missed having wifi but we found it refreshing. One or two minor criticisms....the grass outside was very long and made recovering dog poo difficult.....it would have been nice to have the phone number so we could receive incoming calls (particularly as the mobile signal was intermittent). Having said that we had a marvellous week. We can recommend Picton Castle and gardens, walk to Blackpool Mill, the Old Station near Tintern and all walks on the river Wye at Symonds Yat. For eating out we found the Royal Arms at Llangrove excellent for Sunday lunch and we ate there in the evenings but the menu is a little limited. Altogether Rose Cottage is a 5* cottage.

This is a delightful cottage and set in a perfect location from where you could explore Wales, Gloucertershire, and Monmouthshire.. There are a lot of castles and houses to see as well as such beautiful countryside too. There are some narrow lanes to travel down but take care and they are good to use. Rose cottage is very well designed and has everything you need for a wonderful stay. It was very well equipped with everything from microwave, hair drier, store cupboard with flour, sugar, spices, tea and oil which was very helpful. One lovely touch was the welcome tray with a bottle of Welsh beer, Welsh cider, Kettle crisps and some Welsh cakes. Rose cottage is very private with a large lawn garden with views across the fields with sheep and lambs in them. From every window there are delightful views of the countryside. The building at the top of the garden had a washing machine, tumble drier, sink and spare logs and kindling for the wood burner. The bed is very comfortable to sleep in. The cottage is really lovely to stay in. There is patio area outside the patio doors and it is a real sun trap. There are lots of good walks nearby. There are a lot of leaflets and maps and guides to help you make the most of the area. There is a Lidl at Monmouth which is close by for shopping . While in Monmouth near the Monow bridge on the way up to the town there is a passage way with a shop called Pasty heaven. Their pasties are gorgeous especially the steak and Stilton ones. It is a lovely place to stay and we would recommend it.

We have just had another superb Christmas break in this beautiful cottage. Such a lovely place to spend Christmas and the bonus was...it snowed. If you like a remote location, this is the place to stay. It didn't bother us there was no WiFi. It's nice to turn the mobile off, enjoy the silence, the superb views, the walks and to just sit and chat and chill out. We are now looking to book our next trip in the spring/summer. It will be nice to open the patio doors and enjoy nature at its best. Can't wait!

This beautiful little cottage is possibly our very favourite place to go when we want to unwind. When you're at work and it's stress, stress, stress, everyday, you can forget all that when you come here. Whilst most people decide to go off touring and seeing the local sights, we literally stayed here at the cottage all week and did as little as possible. The settings are just superb, hidden away down a tiny country lane out of the way of everyone and overlooked by no one. We didn't see a soul all week and we loved it! So what do you do if you're not going out sightseeing? We took leisurely walks with the dog, sat out in the garden, read books, listened to classical music and just completely relaxed and switched off. This cottage really is a breath of fresh air and considering that I am someone who doesn't sleep well and wakes up in the morning feeling tired and achy, I can truly say that here, I woke up in the morning after the best night's sleep ever, feeling refreshed. We love this place so much following our first visit in October 2016, that we subsequently visited again in June 2017 and we have two weeks booked here in 2018. We simply cannot recommend this place highly enough if you're looking for somewhere to wind down, switch off from the world and get away from everyone. In addition to that, you have beautiful surroundings and a full view down the valley and across to the Welsh mountains. June brings the beautiful summer flowers and in October, the nightshade and yew berries as well as beechnuts and beautiful autumn leaves just cover the lane. There's always lots of nature around and about, we've seen hares, pheasants and various birds in the garden. At nighttime, you have perfect peace and quiet, not a sound and no light pollution, you can sit out and see thousands of stars. And even if the weather is varied, which it was when we stayed, it doesn't spoil the beauty and tranquility of this cottage. The cottage itself has an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, complete with dining table, settee, woodburner, TV and DVD player. You are welcomed with a basket in the kitchen which contains various goodies, upon your arrival. You look out upon fields and beautiful countryside as you eat your breakfast and then you can open the doors into the patio area where you'll find chairs and a table and even a lantern if you wish to stay out after dark. The washing machine and dryer and logs for the woodburner are located in a shed conveniently situated just a few feet away at the top of the garden. We didn't use the woodburner however, even in October, we were perfectly warm enough with the underfloor heating which is another little luxury of this cottage. Upstairs you have the bathroom which is thoughtfully laid out and spacious and then the lovely little bedroom and in summer you can have the bedroom window open to let the breeze flow through. So all in all, we absolutely love this place, so much so that although we very highly recommend it, we don't want to because we want to very selfishly keep it all to ourselves! ;-)

My wife and I stayed here over new year and we couldn't of been happier, a quiet little cottage situated away from anything. Upon arrival, there was a lovely little hamper of cider and crisps (always a winner in my eyes!). The layout out is small but perfect for the two of us and our little dog, who adored the log fire. Only a short walk takes you to the woods which is so so peaceful. The only reason I didn't score a 5 - the shower. I'm 5ft 7ish and I was a few inches from my head touching the ceiling. The issue I had was the shower (a very good shower I must add) is at the "non-tap" end and your unable to really get underneath it without performing some impressive yoga move. I always ask myself - would I go back again? I would have to say yes. Lovely cottage, well equipped and perfect surroundings. Thank you.
