A largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, it is famous for being the birthplace of William Wordsworth, whose family home is owned by the National Trust and makes for a popular visitor attraction. Cockermouth's main street offers a variety of shops, pubs and eateries, and walkers can bask in beautiful scenery and walking opportunities in the northern lakes, around Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
