MEIFOD, POWYS

Llanfair Caereinion 6 miles; Llanfyllin 6 miles; Welshpool 7 miles; Lake Vrnwy 11 miles; Shrewsbury 27 miles

Meifod is a sunny little, stone-built village by the River Vyrnwy with a local pub and convenience store with a post office, enveloped by rolling hills and woodland, with attractive houses. Situated about 7 miles north-west of Welshpool, this pretty village also offers tennis courts (day tickets can be purchased cheaply from the village shop), its own ruby and football teams and a historic church where there is said to be the royal tombs of 2 former princes of Powys. Fishing permits for the River Vyrnwy and Banwy can also be purchased from the village shop. Lake Vyrnwy with its RSPB reserve and Pistyll Rhaeader (Llanrhader waterfall) a 240ft waterfall in 3 stages, which is counted as one of the Seven Wonders of Wales, are only a short drive away. Both are sites of scientific interest. Gwyndu Cottage is about an hours drive away from 5 of the best places to ride mountain bikes in North Wales. Nearby, Llanfair Caereinion is in the heart of old Montgomeryshire's Banwy valley and is one of the smallest towns in Powys. Just a short walk over the Banwy Bridge from the hilly streets of the town centre, is the steam Welshpool to Llanfair Light Railway. Welshpool is a bustling market town, nestled in the Severn Valley 4 miles from the border between Wales and England. There is a lovely blend of shops, quality pubs and restaurants, as well as a restored cock fighting pit and interesting Heritage Trail. Visit the famous 13th Century Powis castle, or enjoy a cruise along the Montgomery canal. There is much to be enjoyed of an afternoon here. A gentle stroll through the town will have you taking in the Georgian architecture, there is even a golf club with a top of the world situation, overlooking the picturesque Welsh borderlands - a perfect location to practice your swing! Further afield is country town of Shrewsbury, with its half-timbered Tudor buildings, museums and lovely shopping experiences. An opportunity not to be missed!
