Blaenau Ffestiniog, a fascinating old slate town, boasts an ideal location from which to explore Snowdonia National Park. Plenty of retail outlets, watering holes, and dining establishments can be found here. Zip World Slate caverns, home to the world's longest and fastest zip line, is one of the top things to do in the area. Slate mines have been awarded UNESCO's prestigious designation as a world heritage site, and now curious tourists can take fascinating underground tours to see mining as it was done in bygone eras. A famous narrow gauge railway, the Ffestiniog mountain railway, travels for 13 miles through Snowdonia National Park to the port town of Porthmadog. The nearby Portmeirion village is well-known for its architecture and as the location where The Prisoner was filmed, and there are also family-friendly beaches in the area.
