Area
The scattered village of Bronygarth is situated in the Ceiriog Valley and lies on the Offa's Dyke Path, the boundary between England and Wales. Just across the River Ceiriog is the magnificent 14th century Marcher Fortress of Chirk Castle with its award-winning gardens, medieval tower and dungeon. The small border town of Chirk is referred to as "The Gateway to Wales" and offers pubs, restaurants, a village store, gift shop, canal boat marina and an excellent golf course. Ceiriog Valley, known as ' The Valley of Poets' and described by Lloyd George as "a little bit of heaven on earth" offers walks, cycle routes and local trout fishing. The ancient border town of Oswestry boasts restaurants, numerous shops, historic buildings and traditional pubs as well as its well preserved hill top Iron Age fort from where long distant views can be enjoyed. Many historic houses and castles can be visited nearby including Powis Castle, Erddig and Attingham Park. Only five miles from charming Llangollen, with its stream railway, watersports, famous Eisteddfod, Castell Dinas Bran, Valle Crucis Abbey and scenic Horseshoe Pass. Also five miles is the market town of Oswestry with its iron age hillfort, and within easy reach is the Roman walled city of Chester with its famous zoo and the medieval town of Shrewsbury, both only half an hour by train or car from Chirk. The nine meres of Ellesmere are close by and provide scenic walks, sailing, fishing and boat trips, an abundance of wildlife and great birdwatching opportunities. Further afield are the Welsh Mountains and coast, Lakes Bala and Vyrnwy, medieval Shrewsbury, the Roman walled city of Chester and the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge. The beautiful Lake Vyrnwy and Llanrheadr waterfall are also within an hours drive.
