This 17th-century cottage sits in the pretty hamlet of Sant Pau d'Ordal. From the front door, it’s a five-minute wander to a small selection of local restaurants and bars, you’re a stone’s throw from the Penedes wine region, packed with vineyards to explore. Barcelona is just a half-hour drive away too, so you can spend the day admiring Gaudi's masterpieces in the big city before returning to your peaceful country retreat. If you’ve picked up a few local wines from the Penedes region, perhaps enjoy them in the sun-dappled stone courtyard, which feels distinctly 17th century with its alcoves and honey-hued stone. Thick stone walls keep things cool inside, and old archways are on display for that traditional farmhouse feel. Dark wood, antique furniture throughout is a charming touch and we love the provincial master bedroom with its own slender balcony for a quiet moment alone.

Soak up the culture in Barcelona and Girona before hitting the coast – the Cap de Begur coves are a must-see, as is the picture-perfect town of Cadaqués, which is known for its white...
