Area Southerness is a small coastal village established in the late 18th century, which looks out over the Solway Firth, and forms part of the Colvend coast, one of the finest stretches of coastline on the 'Scottish Riviera'. Home to two pubs, a village store, a leisure centre with a pool and two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748, it has everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The nearby Criffel Hill rises to 569m, offers wonderful views of the farmland and the sands of the Nith Estuary below, and provides great walking opportunities. The Southerness Championship Golf Course adjoins the village and offers panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west. A great location, with something to keep everybody occupied.
Region From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

The Bothy was comfortable and spacious for myself, husband and teenage daughter.. It was spotlessly clean and everything we needed was there! Comfy beds, lovely relaxing sofas, massive telly, sunny patio and garden. It has been decorated since the photos on the Sykes website and is lovely. It also has Wifi which on the advert it says it doesn't. 2 minutes walk from the beach and a beautiful bit of coast. Good base for exploring this part of Dumfries and Galloway.

We had a good stay, cottage is lovely, refurbished to very good standard.. There are two thing missing for us- a dishwasher(this adds a chore to holiday stay), and comfy bed in master(the one there has squeaky frame and sagged mattress). If those two things could be sorted we'd be coming back for sure. Owner- Mr Ryan was very helpful. Location is absolutely perfect, 2 mins walk from the Lighthouse/beach. Plenty to do in 30min drive from the cottage. If you get good weather, your holidays become great adventure for all the family.

A lovely house in a lovely location, with lots to do nearby.. Only downside was the WiFi speed in the property, but sometimes a digital detox is ideal, when there are beautiful walks along the beach and nearby towns and countryside.

A superb cottage, well eqipped and very comfortable.. One of the best we have stayed in. The location for visiting Galway was excellent.
Local shop and fish and chip shop closed for the season the first days we were there as the two main caravan sites were closing so if visiting early or late be aware. As a result the area was very quiet which suited us.

The Bothy is a lovely seaside cottage - huge living room with comfortable leather settees and a large TV with Sky.. A couple of tiny points - there didn’t seem to be a guest book which is sometimes helpful when others leave feedback about the area and places to go; the only other thing was that there was no ‘information’ folder that lists things like when to put the bins out/recycling etc. These things really don’t matter but just an idea for the future. Loved our break, it was peaceful, warm and cosy. Thank you for a lovely stay.

The cottage was excellent, newly decorated and new carpets absolutely beautiful.. The only down side was that there was no internet access and a very poor mobile phone reception

The cottage was excellent except for the low ceilings upstairs, for tall people I returned with a few bumps to the head.. This would not stop us returning as the cottage was excellent.

Our second stay in The Bothy in two years, so speaks for itself. The property offers everything you need, is welcoming, warm and comfortable and includes a large flat screen TV (with Sky) and DVD player. Also excellent off street parking for several cars.
A convenient base from which to tour this lovely scenic area.

Fantastic cottage which my kids loved especially my toddler who loved the space to run around. Lovely area even though quiet in February but will definitely go back. It felt like home from home which we loved.

The bothy is reached by a small private road in a quite area of Southerness near to the lighthouse. So if you want peace and quite this could be the place for for you, but if like us you have young children it is also a good place for you.
The information about the bothy on the web is accurate , so i will add a few other details, the accommodation is well kept and clean, if you have small children the bothy comes with a lot of toys and games, outside it has a slide and a trampoline for older children. For adults it comes with some books and film CDs it has a large screen tv in the living room and one in the kitchen .If you have very small children it has safety gates for the stairs.
As for wheel chair access not by the front door you may be able to get around to the back door which has a ramp to it but the path is gravel so it my be hard going getting round but doable .
The only real problem for some is the low ceilings in the bedrooms which you are warned about but you get used to them after a bit. Down stairs the two rooms are large with a big bathroom with bath and shower and toilet,
Not much else to add we had a nice week at the bothy the wife said it had the womans touch to it in the decoration etc i think it felt homely but thats just me,
Our two grand children loved playing with the toys ( they also had a lot of their own with them) and the outside play area.

The house was pleasant, comfortable and quiet. It was within easy reach of an atmospheric, rocky beach with its own old lighthouse.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Bothy. It was exceptionally clean and well presented and the cottage sits in a private and secluded garden. There is excellent off road parking for the car, and it is only a short walk to the sea.The owners have given the holiday maker many home comforts from a high quality TV, with a good Sky package, to comfortable sofas and a modern well designed master bathroom (and an en suite to the main bedroom). We were sorry to leave and will hopefully return.

A nice, well positioned cottage close to the sea and amenities. It was very peaceful and tranquil with plenty of space in the living area and garden. Ample parking space and very helpful owner.
