First impressions are important, and Rapids nails it. The sense of space in the flat (largely due to the amount of light and the high ceilings) is remarkable, and then, when you step outside, you’re greeted by a host of plants, and even a hot tub. While it’s not in the middle of the action, Alfama isn’t far at all (you can be there in less than ten minutes on foot). The main reservation we have is the general condition – it wasn’t perfect when we visited. However, there’s enough to outweigh that, as long as you’re aware of what you’re getting into.

This home is managed directly by its owner who will be your point of contact before and during your stay. João used to be a war reporter until he decided it was time for a change, and in 2012 he turned his hand to hosting instead. His favourite part of the job is that he gets to meet people when they’re on holiday, away from their daily stresses – we’re sure his guests appreciate João’s relaxed and cheerful attitude too!
