Under an hours drive away from both Livorno and Pisa, this quaint farmhouse near the mediaeval village of Ghizzano exemplifies rustic comfort. With bold, wooden beams above you and cool terracotta under your feet, stroll from room to room in search of your favourite spot before settling in with a poetry collection and espresso from the stove-top cafetiere. You might settle in the lounge by the fireplace, or throw the shutters open in your bedroom and let the breeze through, or maybe you’ll find your place poolside in one of the sunloungers. It would be a smart move, considering how easily you can slip into the pool if the Tuscan heat becomes too much to bear. After, simply dry off and reclaim your spot. Families will enjoy the generous garden if ever the home starts to feel a little too small – escape to the sunny lawn, which coincidentally also makes for a great picnic spot. Come together for alfresco meals in the garden under the shaded table, or wander out to find a restaurant where you can sample authentic pizza and pasta. A thirty-eight-minute scenic drive will get you to San Gimignano, an ancient town with 13th-century walls and rising mediaeval towers. Bring back tiramisu or biscotti to enjoy as the day draws to a close and get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
