Sitting between Pisa and Lucca, this beautiful villa was built back in the 15th century as a hunting lodge for the de Medici family and five centuries on, it still retains an air of opulence. Given the sheer size, a tour around the home will take you a fair while, but it's necessary to see the grand architectural flourishes that abound, from marble staircases and the soaring cupola to the vaulted-ceiling ballroom complete with an impressive period fireplace. The interior design is similarly lavish, with chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, antique furnishings and a huge range of portraiture on the walls. As this was a property built to facilitate the enjoyment of the great outdoors, that's still more than possible to do. A balcony offers superb views of the Tuscan countryside, as well as a certain leaning tower on especially clear days. There's sports equipment to use on the expansive grounds, as well as a swimming pool and an outdoor kitchen for whipping up something delicious after a dip. The villa sits within the village of Asciano Pisano, which has everything from a bakery and a restaurant to the start of hiking routes around the surrounding mountains. Pisa is only ten minutes away in the car, while Spiaggia del Gombo only takes forty-five minutes' drive when you fancy a day at the beach.
