The word simple is often used as a putdown, but this apartment in the Rome suburbs is a great example of pared-back design being more than the sum of its parts. The interior is dominated by muted neutrals and light pastel colours, but it feels bright and instantly welcoming. It certainly helps that there's a lot of natural light coming in through the glass doors, which in turn lead out to a long balcony. There's seating out here, as well as a view of the green hillside which is rather peaceful — especially for the Italian capital. The same could be said for the surrounding suburb of Aurelio, which feels a world away from the touristy haunts but is actually quite close when it comes down to it. You can go from your front door to the Pantheon in twenty-five minutes via public transit if you put your mind to it. The sprawling grounds of Villa Doria Pamphilj can be reached in ten minutes on foot, too.

When we measured the Wi-Fi, we couldn't get it faster than 6Mbps, so perhaps not one for remote workers

Two people can sleep on a sofa bed in the living room, but they wouldn't have much privacyThere’s also a second flat in the building tun by the same hosts, so larger groups can look into the possibility of booking both at the same time

Free parking is available on the street outside

A cot can be provided by the host if required

There's a lift in the building and the home itself is step-free — however, wheelchair users should note the big step before the front door

Local guide

About Aurelio

Despite its proximity to the Vatican, Aurelio is still often overlooked by Romans and tourists alike, only mentioned as the butt of the joke. However, it has more to offer than most would believe. A bustling residential district, it has plenty of local haunts with the clientele spilling out onto the street, as well as several green squares and a Russian Orthodox church, Santa Caterina Martire. It’s worth noting that some parts can be hard to reach, even with public transport, and it becomes less prepossessing as you head further north or west.
