Looking at it now, you probably can't imagine this stylish cottage had been a 19th-century sheepfold. The exposed beams, stonework and sloped ceilings still hint at it, but overall, it has transformed into a charming house set amongst vineyards, lavender and the forest. The rolling countryside is visible from the outdoor seating areas, including the alfresco dining table. Though two bedrooms feature mezzanine sleeping areas in addition to the downstairs double beds, it can comfortably sleep four each if everyone's willing to compromise on privacy. There's close to an acre garden for the kids to run around, but you can also keep them busy by visiting the surrounding towns, starting with Ménerbes.
Home truths: *The swimming pool – heated between May and September – isn't fenced. Little ones will need supervision.
*Though this is a single-level home, there is one step up to the master bedroom and two steps up to the kitchen and dining area.
*Two bedrooms have mezzanine levels with extra beds. These rooms will have limited privacy.
*We suggest hiring a car for ease – there's parking for up to four cars.
*Pool towels are not included, so if you're planning on swimming, you might want to bring your own.
*If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot and high chair for free.
*Though there isn't air conditioning, there are portable fans available for warmer evenings.
