Area The crown gem of Wiltshire is the historic city of Salisbury, which is dominated by the imposing Gothic cathedral from the thirteenth century. The cathedral boasts 750 years of history, including the world's best-preserved original Magna Carta, Europe's oldest working clock, and Britain's tallest spire. The River Avon and historic Chilmark stone walls around the cathedral close, which is packed of stunning architectural landmarks. The city features attractive half-timbered buildings, traditional bars, charming shops, and a twice-weekly market on its ancient streets. Alternately, wander along the Town Path and marvel at the breath-taking views of the cathedral across the water meadows. After hours, the area has a flourishing arts scene with one of the best repertory theatres in the nation, a bustling arts centre, a movie theatre, and a tonne of independent eateries. A short journey from Salisbury will take you to Stonehenge, the Stourhead House and Gardens owned by the National Trust, the imposing Wilton House, the New Forest National Park, and the Hampshire and Dorset beaches. Your main issue will be managing your time because Salisbury and the surrounding area have so much to offer!
