Fantastic location for walking and cycling.. Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall are great places to visit only a short drive away. The canal towpath is great for cycling and the Pennine Bridleway literally passes through the hamlet. The cottage is spacious with ample facilities for a family group. Yes the road to the cottage is steep - always good to learn a new skill!!

Good cottage in a rural setting but close to whatever you need and want.. Road up to cottage is narrow and steep and parking access is narrow if you have a big car. That said we really enjoyed our break with regular walks with dog along the canal.

The cottage is lovely and well-kept, clean, comfortable and well equipped, with plenty of space for 5 adults and a medium sized dog.. Penny and Nigel are lovely, and available if needed. We found the WiFi was very intermittent and phone signal very poor, especially inside the house due to the really thick stone walls, which did have the bonus of keeping the house cool. We spent the evenings watching bats from the house. There are lots of walking trails, but they are hard-going and probably not suitable for people with mobility issues or small children. Access to the cottage is via a long single-track, steep and windy road, with quite a few blind spots and few passing places. This is walkable but going down is far easier than coming back up as it is very steep! There is another walking track which straighter but steeper and would be more difficult after wet weather. It took us at least 10 minutes to walk down both tracks, and the local shop would probably take a further 10 minutes (or more) to walk to, but there are shops within a 10 minute drive, and the pubs would probably be about half hour walk from the cottage. We managed to pre-book an Asda grocery delivery for groceries but the driver did have difficulties finding the property as the postcode covers a very large area! Remember to take essentials like milk with you until you can get to a shop. The Gordon Riggs garden centre is a nice visit but only allows dogs in if they are put in a trolley - not suitable for our dog!! And the Waterfall tearooms and giftshop doesn't allow dogs at all, and currently doesn't sell gifts! We had a marvelous meal at the Shepherds Rest in Lumbutts, which was a short drive away, and allowed dogs in the covered outside area. The food was incredible and made better by the government's Eat out to Help out scheme. Drives to Blackpool, Liverpool and Leeds were just over 1 hour away from the cottage. Overall we had a lovely, peaceful stay in beautiful countryside surroundings.

The cottage is in the most beautiful location, you can stroll in the hills or by the canal.. The cottage was dog friendly and our 2 retrievers were perfectly settled. It was a beautiful home from home with everything we needed. We will definitely be back again soon.

Salter Rake Gate Cottage exceeded our expectations, it has been renovated to a high standard and was warm and welcoming.. Penny and her family were excellent and really have covered all the bases. The location is stunning with various circular walks right on the doorstep. We also ventured further afield using the local railway station only 5mins away.

We stayed at this lovely cottage last weekend. The pictures on the web do not do it justice it really is amazing. Seven of us stayed and a lot more with guests coming and going over the weekend. There was plenty of room for everyone. The wood burner helped make it a magical stay for all of us. The bedrooms were an excellent size and has three separate toilets including two large bathrooms. We would have happily given five stars if it wasn’t for a couple of points: The main shower was rubbish with no pressure, although the shower over the bath was good. The cottage was clean but it desperately needs a deep clean with the floors very dirty and the mop head should be binned. It is so close to being perfect and even though not a five star rating very reasonably priced and worth every penny.

Salter Rake Gate Cottage is a lovely home from home with plenty of space and a good location in a quiet and scenic setting.. The cottage was very clean indeed, very comfortable and also very practical for our two dogs. I worked in Manchester during the week and it is an easy commute to Victoria. I did get the opportunity for some stunning reservoir walks (inc. the 3 reservoir circuit above the cottage on the moors). My friends wanted to access shops and rambles locally and there is plenty to choose from. I would be really happy to stay here again.

Salter Rake Gate cottage is a lovely ( dog friendly) family house in a quiet hamlet up a fairly steep hill.. The decor and furnishings are of a high standard and the kitchen well equipped. Very comfortable beds too. Fantastic access to walks from the door. Although the house is quite remote it’s in easy reach by car of pubs, food shops and some great takeaways. The owner’s communication and information on walks and the local area are excellent. Highly recommend and would definitely return.

We very much booked this cottage because of the convenience of the location, being close to family in Littleborough.. It is a delightful cottage and we are very likely to book it again when needing to stay for any period of time. The location is wonderful, the house is a delight to stay in and the facilities really good. We did light the fire and that helped to make the cottage nice and warm of an evening as it was still quite chilly at the end of March. My feedback on the kitchen would be that the oven could do with a good clean! it was by no means really dirty but it was cleaner when we left than when we arrived. Many thanks for the use of the cottage.

We booked for Christmas 2018, and the cottage is comfortable and well stocked. The kitchen is good with most of the equipment you are likely to need - although you might need some extra pans if you are doing a big meal. Beds are comfortable. Main room is nice and warm once the fire gets going. The owners are friendly, and their dog is lovely. There is lots of good walking nearby. It is up a steep access road, so if any of your party have limited mobility, be aware they might not be able to get about without a vehicle. Overall, an excellent break in a lovely cottage.

The road leading to the property is exceedingly steep and narrow.. There is no garden and access to the hills above property very steep. The house is very spacious and comfortable, the t.v. works by satalilite and was difficult to get on at times. Mobile phone reception is also intermittent. Good property and area for keen walkers, but probably a little steep for older folk. Owners very nice, friendly and helpful.

This cottage is in the most spectacular countryside with both high peak and canal walks right on the doorstep.. The owners were very pleasant and their dog even left a tennis ball on the back step for our dog to play with! Definitely merits a revisit.

Lovely cottage, extremely well equipped and very detailed notes about the house and the area.. It was so much bigger than it looked in the photographs, but still felt cosy. Plenty of extra bedding available, lots of choice of books and dvds and very generous free supply of firewood and coal. The driveway is very narrow and steep, but great fun, especially when you meet sheep and rabbits on the way up!

We feel very lucky to have found such a wonderful cottage to stay in. Having spent a couple of years living in Todmorden a while back, I wanted to show the sights to my husband, 3 year old and in-laws. Finding a place to sleep 7 in the Hebden Bridge was surprisingly hard, but then we found Salter Rake Gate cottage and weren't disappointed. Up a rather steep hill we found a beautifully refurbished house equipped with everything we could possibly need. The location was great too, beautiful rural views from every window yet easy to reach local amenities in Todmorden and Littleborough. Our son adores trains so we took advantage of the railway to take trips to Halifax and Bradford as well as a ride on the Worth Valley Railway. We would highly recommend Eureka and the Bradford media museum for kids on a rainy day. The in laws enjoyed walks along the many footpaths accessible from the house, and the hubby even managed a bit of mountain biking at Lee Valley Quarry. Also recommended is a visit to Grandma Pollards chippy opposite Walsden station. Fantastic fish a day chips in a real traditional restaurant with a bus to eat your chips on if you can find space! They also do enormous and delicious fruit pies and vanilla slices if your stomach can take it. We would happily stay in this beautiful cottage again and would love to take advantage of the great location for walks along the Pennine Way and beyond in the future.

As a family of 5, with a big, nervous dog who loves to walk, we chose this cottage as it seemed to offer a perfect location away from the town and with access straight onto the hills above. We were delighted when we got here, via a steep road, as it was lovely and secluded with just a handful of houses surrounding it. The location was perfect also for day trips out to wonderful places such as Hebden Bridge, Hollingsworth Lake, Heptonstall and further afield to Manchester. I would particularly recommend a walk up to Gaddings dam which was a lovely walk for the whole family to enjoy on a sunny day. We were also impressed with the cottage itself, which was much bigger than we had expected. The layout was just perfect for our family and the quality of fittings was to a very good standard. We loved the hard flooring downstairs which was very useful for our Labrador and also the open plan layout. The addition of a large shower room and bathroom as well as a downstairs toilet was also appreciated, since we had two older teenagers with us. I would therefore recommend this cottage and I would definitely return here.

Not really any need to get the car out as there are some lovely walks from the house and the railway at Walsden is a 20 minute walk along the canal ...from there regular trains to Todmorden, Hebden bridge ...and further. The cottage was warm and immaculate on arrival. It was tastefully decorated, with many thoughtful touches. Our boys and dog particularly liked the meadow behind the house and it was wonderful to be able to walk out from the house without having to drive. Had beautiful views and there was lots to do a quick drive from cottage.

We had seven of us plus our dog staying at this lovely cottage for my mother's 70th birthday. The downstairs rooms are spacious and comfortable, and there was plenty of room for all of us upstairs - a bonus to have two large bathrooms upstairs as well as a downstairs loo!. Kitchen is well-kitted out, which was great as we ate at home most nights. The cottage was impressively clean and the heating was most effective - never cold enough for us to light the stove! Fantastic to be able to walk up onto the hills directly from the house. Also good for young boys and not-so-young dog to have the meadow just to the back of the house. Lots to do in the area - especially walking - we will need to return several times to cover what we've missed! Be prepared for steep drive up from main road and the turning is easy to miss on your first arrival. Parking a bit tricky for more than one car - up a steep drive behind the house, but manageable. Penny and Nigel both very friendly and helpful.

Stayed at this cottage with my sisters and daughter for a short family break. The cottage is located high up and has superb views of the open countryside around. The property has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. There are 3 good size bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a downstairs toilet so plenty of room for 6-7 people. There is also a large kitchen which is fully equipped with everything you need and a large lounge and dining area. The woodburning stove was very cosy although there is central heating throughout. Lots of lovely walks to do close to the cottage. Would highly recommend to a family or friends wishing a peaceful and relaxing stay.
