There were mining and fishing activities in this area throughout the nineteenth century, but it is now a well-known tourist destination, with visitors flocking to its two-mile stretch of golden sand on the North Sea Coast. In addition to the town's charming independent shops and arcades, Spanish City, a remarkable dining and entertainment complex that was originally constructed in 1910 as a concert hall and painted to look like a Spanish village, is a popular tourist destination.
