Due to the extent of the Covid-19 infections and restrictions in England and Wales, we did not come to England from Germany therby losing our compete rental cost.. Sykes made no effort to compensate us but referred only to the Terms an Conditions.

The owner Susan was very friendly and helpful and dealt promptly with the only two, unforseen, issues arising during our stay.. The cottage was clean, cost and comfortable and her suggestions about places to eat and visit were spot on.

The photos do not do this place justice.. There was so much space. The garden is fabulous. It's just a shame the weather wasn't better. The cottage is so well looked after and cared for by Susan who did everything to make us feel welcome. We had a bottle of wine and milk and other goodies when we arrived. She brought us her delicious lemon drizzle cake which she is now famous for! I had brought dish washer tablets, bin bags etc with me but they were all provided. A proper home from home. My favourite part of the cottage was the walk-n wardrobe which I wasn't expecting. There is so much to do in the area. You can walk into Chirk which has a few pubs and restaurants. There are nice walks along the canal. We managed to walk to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which I highly recommend. There's a pub in Weston Rhyn which is walk-able and does a lovely Sunday lunch and has a large TV screen and a new pool table. You are well placed for Shrewsbury and Chester. I hope to return to Penymaes one day and have recommended it to all my friends.

A lovely property which is obviously cared for by the owner who was on hand in case we had a problem (which we didn’t)! Being Christmas the cottage had been decorated which was a bonus. Winter may not be the best time to visit but we had no problem - the place was warm and cosy. No complaints!

Everything! The building (retaining charm of age with modern amenities), the location in such beautiful countryside (the panorama from the fields at the back are amazing), the facilities as everything is thought of from welcome tray to torches in bed side drawers, and the friendliness of the wonderful host Susan. We had a memorable week there we shall treasure for a long time and look forward to coming again to in the future.

A lovely, characterful and very well equipped cottage in a peaceful location, well placed for many local attractions.. Very welcoming owners who in addition to the excellent welcome pack presented us with a delicious home made cake. The garden is an absolute haven. We loved our time there and wouldn't hesitate to use it again if we return to the area.

We loved our stay in this cottage. Situated down a short lane next to open countryside it is comfortable, extremely well equipped and characterful, with a large private garden perfect for al fresco dining. Susan in all it is, the owner is extremely welcoming and presented with us a delicious home made cake to top off the already generous welcome pack. It is perfectly situated for visiting so many Shropshire and Welsh attractions and is such a warm, cosy place to come back to after a day out. All in all it is one of the nicest cottages we have stayed in, and we can't recommend it highly enough.

Fantastic cottage.. four of us just spent 7 days at Penymaas to celebrate New Year (very good value considering the time of year, worked out at just a tad over £25 per person, per night. You couldn't get B&B for that, and we had the whole cottage, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a superb Kitchen/diner, very comfortable lounge with huge wood burner that kept the whole cottage very warm and cosy, there is also a laundry room/utility and a boot room to get out of your muddy things before entering the cottage to the kitchen, downstairs bedroom or lounge) Owner lives just behind the cottage but trees and shrubs make sure you are not overlooked and your privacy is assured. Susan (the owner) is very friendly and could not have been more attentive to anything we required, and it has to be said, she is the finest baker of cakes and mince pies in all of Shropshire. Outside, the garden is beautifully maintained with patio heater and possible seating for 22, yes, 22 people, you could hold your own garden party here overlooking the valley towards Chirk and beyond into Wales. Western Rhyn is within 10 minutes walk, with shop and choice of Pubs, recommended is The Plough, a little further to walk in the village but worth it, Landlord extremely friendly to visitors, will meet you wearing a big smile and a bow tie. If Shropshire is on one of your places to visit then do, do consider this cottage, you will not be disappointed. Oh, forgot to mention, the owner of Penymaas also owns another property on the aqueduct over the river Dee which is at 3 to 4 miles, a good walk or a short drive. Not to be missed if you're in the area. This cottage is 5 star plus.

Leading a busy life, the peace and quiet of this cottage is perfect.. The new seating area is lovely and we spent our late afternoons there with a well earned cup of tea. As well as being close to Snowdonia, there is also plenty to enjoy in the area. This was our second visit to Penymaes, and we will definitely be back.

We had a wonderful time at Penymaes.. The cottage itself was spacious, cosy and very well equipped with everything that we could need including a new high chair and travel cot. The garden was large and beautiful and we were able to pick apples and blackberries to make a delicious crumble. Susan the owner was so welcoming and helpful in every way and provided a lovely welcome tray of food and drink. The surrounding countryside was gorgeous and there is lots to do in the area. We would strongly recommend this cottage and would love to visit again.

This is definitely the place to stay if you require peace and quiet, in the evenings we heard absolutely no noise whatsoever. The owner Susan is lovely, very welcoming and greeted us with the most luxurious welcome pack we have ever received. The cottage is old and charming - we found the stairs a bit of a challenge as they are quite steep and narrow, apart from this we were more than happy with the cottage as Susan has equipped it well with everything you could need and more. There was a large supply of big fluffy towels and a wonderful hot tub in the secluded garden.

The area is very peaceful and beautiful. There is lots to do and visit in the surrounding area. This is a wonderful cottage to relax in, ideal for walkers with space for wet clothes and boots, and there is lots of space in the bedrooms for clothes. The hot tub was wonderful, even in the rain. The nearest supermarket stocks lots of local produce and everything you could need. Would love to go again, it was a little piece of heaven, and I liked watching the sheep out of the bedroom window.

Penymaes is beautiful, it is tasteful and yet very comfortable. Everything had been thought of and all of our needs were anticipated and met. The owner is the most thoughtful of hosts, staying at Penymaes was like staying in a home away from home and what I noticed was the sheer professionalism that our hosts had from the way that everything had been thought of. The cottage has all the facilities of home.

It was absolutely superb, the very essence of a country cottage; well preserved despite being served with all mod cons, and a total credit to the owners (who are lovely by the way). The hot tub in the garden is a real treat, and not overlooked so no feeling self-conscious (if you're that way inclined!). There was excellent scenery and local walking with public footpaths running from both ends of the driveway.

A beautiful country cottage in an idyllic location. We especially enjoyed using the hot tub. We used the cottage as a base for sightseeing and walking in Shropshire and Powys.

Pen-y-maes stands at the end of a short lane, snuggled cosily in the surrounding countryside, with just the sound of bird-song in the air. Susan, the owner, was extremely warm and welcoming, and the beautifully laid tray of goodies she left for us in the kitchen were top-notch. (Especially the bottle of wine!) The still-warm lemon drizzle cake which Susan delivered to us in the middle of the week was another delicious treat: It has become something of a tradition now for Susan to make one, I believe! And it was scrummy! The cottage is spotlessly clean, and the quality of the amenities are superb. The hot tub was immaculate: Susan cares for it each morning! The garden is a delight, even in Autumn, and we were happy to be allowed to help ourselves to the windfalls from the apple tree! The area is stunningly attractive, with so many places to visit - for both adults and children - that there is no time to be bored. This is absolutely the best holiday cottage we have ever stayed in. We highly recommend Pen-y-maes. Check in and find out for yourselves!
