Area
Hudswell is a small village located just two miles the town of Richmond in Swaledale. Set in rolling countryside, the village boasts a high street with old houses lining the route, and a local pub, the George and Dragon. Like many village pubs, it recently fell on difficult times, so the villagers clubbed together and now run it as a 'Community Pub Initiative'. The market town of Richmond stands to the north of the River Swale. The town grew up around its castle and today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed by the castle or alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls. Narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers' market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy.

Region
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Electric storage heaters with woodburning stove. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, TV with Freeview, DVD, radio/CD, iPod dock, WiFi, selection of books and games. We stayed in this beautiful cottage in May. It is absolutely gorgeous, very clean and a magnificent welcome pack along with fresh baked scones waiting for you for ‘afternoon tea’. There is a pub in walking distance with lovely home cooked meals or try the Holly Inn just on way to Richmond about 5 minute drive away. Cottage is situated in a beautiful village and not far from Richmond and Catterick. We will definitely be back.

Blacksmith's Cottage was perfect for us.. Furnishings are to a high standard and Vicky has a good eye for detail with some lovely finishing touches. We found the cottage very comfortable and well-equipped with everything we needed. The bed is quite firm which isn't to everyone's liking, but we've taken to travelling with a mattress topper which meant it wasn't a problem. The shower was wonderful. Welcome groceries and information folders were very useful. The outside space is compact but nicely appointed. Parking was easy. Hudswell is a very friendly village with a community owned pub and shop, The George and Dragon and The Little Shop. We had an evening meal at the pub which was very tasty and reasonably priced. We discovered our new favourite beer, Rudgate Ruby Mild. The Little Shop has fresh bread daily and fresh baked goods on Wednesdays and Fridays which sell out quickly. There are several walks from the village detailed in a handy local guide. We had a lovely stay in the Blacksmith's Cottage and would happily stay again.

Blacksmiths cottage is delightful.. It is in a lovely quiet village with some fantastic walks on the doorstep. The host made us extremely welcome and the attention to detail in the cottage was fabulous. We will definitely be going back at some point as we feel very spoilt. Superb break.

The Blacksmith's cottage is the most delightful, well equipped and tastefully decorated cottage we have ever visited.. Extremely clean, comfortable and with so many extras provided by the owner. The cream tea which awaited us on arrival was delicious. The owners were kind, helpful and most welcoming. There was not one thing that we could fault in the entire cottage. The situation in the village is perfect. It was a pleasure to stay there. The local community run pub just a few yards away has won the Yorkshire Pub of the Year award for the past four years running. We will most definitely be staying at Blacksmith's cottage again and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone..

The cottage is great, in a nice village location & is well equipped.. The owners go above & beyond expectations in terms of little extras & attention to detail. The only drawback for us is the lack of a garden. However, we wouldn't rule out booking this Cottage again for a short break as it's lovely inside, with an excellent Pub / Restaurant nearby. It's well placed for Richmond and Leyburn.
Mrs Chadburn, May 2019

Probably the best self catering accommodation we have ever used.. Small but perfectly formed, the owners go above and beyond what can normally be expected. To be honest, we are a little fussy, and normally our first hour or so is spent washing crockery, glassware and cutlery "to be certain". Truly no need here, everything immaculate. Just some of the things waiting for us: A cream tea! YES. Basic essentials in the fridge. Small torches in the bedroom, lounge and kitchen. Dog towels. I know I have missed things out, but the first sentence describes it all. No hesitation in recommending this cottage.

The cottage was so pretty and in a beautiful quiet village.. The owner gave us a big welcome and had surprised us with a Cream Tea on our arrival. Location was perfect for Richmond and the Dales and made it easy to catch up with all our elderly friends after not having been able to drive up for 2years because of ill health. We have been visiting the Yorkshire Dales for 42 years now and it is still as beautiful, though there are a lot more cars and parking in Richmond is now very difficult.

Lovely cottage, all home comforts and a very welcome cream tea on arrival plus gift.. Hosts very hospitable and assisted when our dog required a vet and even called after to check on how he was. If you want peace and tranquility I can highly recommend Blacksmiths Cottage. Also, fabulous walks from the door step along the river Swale to Richmond.

Blacksmiths Cottage is a wonderfully quaint cottage set in a very picturesque village.. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. We stayed in late January for a week and the cottage was lovely and warm even though the outside night temperatures were -3 on some nights The local pub; The George and Dragon has superb ales and wonderful food and a visit or three is a must! We had a mini walking holiday with our dog and the local walks are very recommended. Thank you again for making our week so awesome.

Beautiful comfortable cottage equipped to a very high standard.. Owner extremely friendly and provided lovely personal touches - homemade scones and jam on arrival! Village very pretty amid a fabulous dales location. Excellent access to beautiful countryside and scenery for walking etc. with the beautiful town of Richmond just a couples of miles drive away. The George and Dragon pub (50 yards away) was a real bonus - fabulous choice of local beers, excellent food and very friendly staff. All in all a really relaxing holiday destination - thoroughly recommended.

Everything we needed in the cottage.. A wonderful cream tea welcome for us and our dog, Hattie, was well provided for with bowls, towels, treats. Safe parking just down the road and wonderful walks in Hudswell Woods. Local Community run pub serves great food and drink. We had a great holiday.
Mrs Parfitt
April 2018
The cottage was lovely, very clean, and homely, the 'back garden' was disappointing, a pebbled square he size of a postage stamp, our dog did not like going out there at all.. the George and Dragon pub was a stone's through away. OK for a drink but the food was awful, had to pay £2 for each selection of veg, which could make it very expensive, The Holly on the Hill approx 2 miles away was very good, to far to walk thouh unless you're very energetic, weather was terrible, foggy, misty, rain, damp, but that is not anyone's fault. Blacksmith's Cottage in Hudswell was beautiful.. A perfect getaway for two. A very very cute little cottage a few yards away from an excellent award winning pub. Vicky had provided a surprise Cream Tea for our arrival which was devoured within minutes. A super comfy bed in quiet surrounds made sleep wonderful. Enough logs for two nights of slow burning open fire and all the kitchen amenities you'd need. Cannot fault this cottage and the service at all. Thank you

The accommodation was excellent, warm and inviting. In particular the kitchen was a bright and comfortable environment to prepare and eat meals. The owner gave a good introduction to the property, offered good advice on the area and was on hand to deal with any issues that might arise. Although the weather for our week could be classed as soggy we really enjoyed our holiday and will be back, hopefully when the climate is more kind.

This beautiful cottage far exceeded both my husband's and my expectations. As soon as we arrived we were blown away with how amazing it was. It was refurbished and furnished to a very high standard and a great deal of money and thought had gone into the layout. The Cottage was very warm - in addition to the log burner in the sitting room there were also wall heaters in every room. In the kitchen everything was available from detergent down to bin liners, we just had to supply our own food. The bathroom boasted a large shaped bath with two overhead showers, one as large as a dinner plate and the other a small one that could be hand held. It had a heated towel rail plus underfloor heating. Carefully positioned skylights had been fitted throughout the Cottage which gave the cottage incredible light during the day. Outside the French windows at the back of the Cottage was a small enclosed patio with potted plants which were tended to regularly. There was also a very beautiful table and chairs for us to use if we chose to eat outside. Outside the front of the cottage was a black wrought iron bench as well. As well as the usual TV, Freeview and DVD player we also had the use of a CD player and WiFi had been fitted the week before we arrived. This proved to be very reliable. DVD's, games, books and local brochures were also all supplied.
