Altho' some reviewers found the place clean and tidy , as a couple who stay in several cottages each year, we found it quite 'unloved' and, quoting from another recent reviewer on Sykes Cottages : ""Whilst the property was comfortable it would benefit from a thorough spring clean, tidying up the flaky paintwork around the bathroom window, new place mats, coasters, chopping board, kitchen bin and dining chair seat covers." We would add to this list: replacing the rusty sink plugs in bath & bathroom sink, disposing of the carpet and scruffy runner in the kitchen, replacing the old lumpy cushions in the lounge and some dirty lampshades around the cottage. The sofa and armchair have seen 'better days' in our view...time to replace. Sadly the weather was poor during our week and I got a virus so stayed indoors for 2 days. The tiny bulb in the electric 'log effect ' electric fire did nothing to cheer me up when I was housebound! Bigger red bulb please! Netflix failed and I recommend a proper router be installed for BB..not just a booster from main house. In short, a nice little cottage in a lovely village but a better 'cleaning regime' and a new 'repairs and replacements regime' would show the owners had some pride in their offering. I have sent photo's to Sykes to apprise them of the shortcomings we found.

As always a very warm welcome here.. Great accommodation: friendly hosts and great to have free wifi as the mobile signal in Lastingham is poor (EE). An excellent base from which to explore the local area. I will return again next year.

Friendly and helpful host, and welcoming historic village with a wonderful pub known for it's meals.. Centrally located at the edge of the moors for the best of North Yorkshire sight seeing. The independence of a self contained small home, and the charm of the outlook onto the beck flowing through willows and beneath a small bridge, makes for a delightful holiday.

Perfect location for our needs which were mainly walking and chilling out.. The cottage is in a quiet, pleasant location in the village with a great pub which served beautiful food. Alan and Robyn were lovely (we were shown around, briefed on the important stuff then left alone to enjoy, we never saw them again until we left). I would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful place and we will definitely be returning soon. If you need to relax and enjoy some beautiful countryside this is the place to be.

We really enjoyed our week at Beckside ,it is such a comfortable, cosy, peaceful place to stay and lovely to come back to at the end of each day.. The bathroom is really nice and modern and a good size and we thought there should be photos of this on your website as we have stayed at places(not with Sykes!) where the bathroom has been not so nice! The village of Lastingham is idyllic ,as is the surrounding area. The village pub,The Blacsmiths Arms has a lovely proper village pub buzz about and was busy the 4 nights we ate there which says it all . The food is excellent with a very varied menu and specials on offer to. Would not hesitate to stay here again

Lovely cottage set in a lovely quiet village surrounded by roaming sheep.. Cottage is well equipped with everything you need . Combination microwave which was enough for our needs as we like to eat out of an evening when on holiday but not for some. It was lovely to get back at the end if our day out to sit outside with a drink listening to the water & all the birds ( be prepared to feed them ) . Lovely sitting on the sofa first thing in the morning watching the birds there were so many they demolished a 2kg bag of bird seed we bought .

Just finished a fabulous week at Beckside in the Yorkshire Moors. Lastingham is a beautiful village on the edge of Yorkshire moorland, and Beckside is a brilliant little cottage in which to stay. It’s very compact but has everything you need to make your stay homely and comfortable, with a well equipped if small kitchen. We ate in half the time. The owners, Robyn and Alan, live in the adjacent building. They are very friendly and helpful but never intrusive. There are so many footpaths from Lastingham that you can walk every day without the need to drive. The village pub The Blacksmiths Arms is very friendly, very quaint, has great beers on tap and serves very good pub food. We were lucky to enjoy warm sunny weather, making this a truly fabulous week in the Yorkshire Moors.

We stayed at this cottage over Easter weekend. It's compact but perfectly formed! It's situated in a very lovely village with a great pub which we can highly recommend. Its next to the small stream and it's very peaceful. It was equipped with everything that we needed, tastefully decorated and we had a lovely four days. My husband even left his coat in the cottage and the owners very kindly posted it back – so thank you! We would definitely recommend this property.

We liked the location, the peace and quiet and the village itself. The stream by the cottage was an added bonus and the local pub was fab.

June 2014
No winding down needed here. As soon as I sat on the patio with a glass of wine listening to the sounds of the bubbling stream I started chilling! Although Beckside is quite a small property, it has been tastefully and cleverly planned to give it a spacious feel. It was spotlessly clean with quality furnishings. The only disadvantage we found was that the kitchen area was a little cramped for us, and whilst a microwave combination oven is adequate, we found it a little restrictive for our needs.
Mr Blackburn
April 2014

July 2013
this was our 2nd stay in Beckside. we had 1 week last year but booked 3 weeks this time and it was just as great. we did loads of travelling but always felt at home once back in the cottage. the time went too quickly but we have a week next year to look forward to now. Cannot fault anything. as well as all the amenities in the cottage there is also the use of the owners washing machine & dryer. Robyn & Alan are the perfect hosts. Thank you so very much for everything. The village is small & unspolit with friendly residents and the most wonderful pub. No mobile phone signal though anywhere in the village. not a problem for us though.but there is wi fi in the cottage. look forward to our return.

From the moment we were welcomed by the owner to the moment we left this was the perfect get away from it all break. The cottage was very cosy for a winter break, we could also see it as ideal for those warmer evenings, sitting outside by the beck. Although Lastingham is in a lovely quiet valley the towns of Whitby, Scarborough and Malton are all within easy reach. Walking on the Moors is accessible from the door-step,wonderful countryside to explore in all seasons as long as you are fully prepared; walking boots, etc. are essential. We hope to return in the very near future.

I had a wonderful holiday. The cottage was in a beautiful and quiet spot - it was just a short walk from a top notch pub in what is a very pretty and peaceful village. The cottage was just the right size for my husband and I and the owner was very friendly and helpful. We found that the location was ideal as a base for exploring the moors - we found a number of very good walks, including to Rosedale Abbey and Hutton-le-Hole that started from Lastingham. I would love to go back again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would use the cottage again.
