Although many locations in the UK assert to have influenced J.R.R. Tolkien's creation of Middle Earth, the author undoubtedly spent a significant amount of time at Stonyhurst College writing on The Lord of the Rings during the Second World War. The 5.5-mile Tolkien Trail examines the Ribble Valley, which may have served as inspiration to the author, and many people have drawn links to the area's natural beauty.
