February 2020
We were very pleased with our choice for the purposes of a family get together.. We were 4 couples and a baby across 3 generations and it suited us very well to be in such quiet and picturesque immediate surroundings. Also we were glad to be on higher ground so were not too badly affected by the floods (Feb 2020), We were pleased with the amount of space in the property and the arrangement of rooms. There is a party wall from the living room to the care home next door which during the evening transmitted the sounds of washing machine spin cycle which might bother some but once we had identified what this was we did not find it intrusive. The weather was wet and windy following 2 major storms so we spent less time out than we had hoped, but again that was OK as we just wanted to spend time together. For this reason we could have made use of a few board games and books. The store room/garage was brilliant for cleaning up the dog after muddy walks and we made good use of the washing machine there and dishwasher in the kitchen. The crockery supplied was only enough for one meal so we had to run the dishwasher each time - some extra mugs and plates would have been useful. There was a folder of local information but we found a lot of it was badly out of date, for example the entrance prices for Goodrich castle were more than double what we had read and there were several eateries that had closed or radically changed. These are small criticisms, overall we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this cottage.

Wonderful cottage which was well equipped and spacious.. 4 good sized bedrooms with a large master bedroom which had an en-suite. Located in quiet village just off the main A40 only 10 minutes from the lovely town of Monmouth. Cottage has a games room and a large lounge with a large dining table which comfortably sits 8. Well equipped kitchen and a freezer and washing machine in the adjacent garage/games room. Would definitely recommend

The oven was not very effective and a shower installed in the en suite would be helpfull with 8 occupants.. The location was lovely and the accomodation was comfortable and of a good size for 8 occupants.

Everything about the break was fantastic, from the booking process, the Sykes app, the information provided by the cottage owner prior to arrival, to the stay itself.. The cottage was the perfect family getaway and was everyrhing and more that we were expecting based on the information in the website.

A comfortable cottage with deceptively spacious accommodation.. The scones, jam and logs for the wood burner supplied by owner Alice were very welcome! We found numerous walks from the cottage; it was lovely to just pull on wellies and head out rather than having to travel by car to experience the fabulous surroundings. Hereford, Ross on Wye, Monmouth, Brecon and Forest of Dean all easily accessible - would definitely recommend!

We had an excellent week blessed with lovely sunshine which always helps.. It accommodated 6 adults very well - lovely house, comfy beds, settees, nice bedding, good equipment (dishwasher etc), very good hot water and heating, useful "games room" for storage and a wonderful setting for exploring the area plus the benefit of peace and quiet in an interesting and picturesque hamlet. BUT there are a few things you should know which detracted a little from the overall view and which, for a house described as "top notch", are not acceptable. There are missing light bulbs in the overhead dining room light, the under cupboard kitchen fitting, a bedside lamp in the 1st bedroom on the left. The shower mat in the main bathroom is black and mouldy underneath. The lampshade on the windowsill lamp in the lounge is cracked and very tatty. We would have liked some small glasses for fruit juice, evening drinks etc. And a few more small dishes, plates would have been useful (we self catered 6 out of 7 nights unlike some people who eat out a lot). And the garden really needs a bit of tidying up. Unusually as well there are no local maps apart from a few printed walks. We forgot to write in the visitors' book quite by mistake but would not particularly have wanted to mention the above in that, but I think the owner should be aware.

My wife booked this for my "extended" 60th birthday. We stayed for 10 days entertaining close family (including 2 young grandchildren, 5 and 8) for the first weekend. We then had two sets of friends to stay at other times plus spent a couple of days on our own playing golf close by at Monmouth GC (very hilly) and Forest Hills GC (many trees!). The cottage is really big inside with 4 large bedrooms, a family bathroom, one ensuite bathroom and a cloakroom downstairs. The living area is spacious and very homely including a wood burning stove. The kitchen is large (we had a private caterer in for one evening and he was complimentary about the facilities given that it is a rental premises). A large garage houses plenty of entertainment for young (and not so young) children. Our grandsons enjoyed the games. The one small downside is that the property is next to a care home. The staff take their breaks outside (coffee and cigarettes) and were quite noisy very early in the morning some days.

Loved staying here, booked by friends. Miles away from the hubbub of normal busy life, yet only a couple of minutes from the A40, so easy to get to. Really well equipped, great kitchen, large lounge and dining area, comfy seats...yes soooo comfy..... and large clean bathrooms. Towels etc supplied, and all the mod cons. It’s a bit like the Tardis, looks quaint and small from the outside, but inside it’s enormous! Dog friendly too. Wonderful place to chill for a few days, with walks etc right on our doorstep. Perfect.

Bit of problem trying to get in touch with owner to sort out key.. Why give Mobil number when people admit not to have a signal at home???

We stayed at Ganarew Cottage at the end of February for my friend's hen weekend. We wanted a comfortable, welcoming place where we could relax between activities! Ganarew cottage was ideal. Whilst it looks quite small from the outside, it is very spacious inside and the light, clean decor gives it a lovely luxurious feel. There were 8 of us all together and there was plenty of room for everyone to get involved in the kitchen and we enjoyed some lovely meals around the dining table. The wood burning stove was an added bonus! The property is very well maintained and the owner was exceptionally helpful. We recommend 'The Moody Cow' for dinner, 'Monnow Events' for outdoors activities and Eastnor Pottery for a more creative experience!

Accomodation excellent, very comfy beds, sinks in bedrooms.. Kitchen well-equipped. Sofas brilliant. Rather cold on arrival and no immediate instructions for heating, wedged in cupboard near thermostat, fire blanket and monitor rather than cottage information book. Games room disappointing cor an adult group who were expecting a full size 8th table and ca.d prepared and similarly pool table, so it was off to the pub.

I booked this cottage for a surprise 70th birthday family get together for my dad.. In total we had 6 adults, a 7 year old, a 2 year old and a 4 month old baby. In addition we took two dogs with us. The cottage was amazing. we opened the door to the kitchen to find fresh bread milk and home made cake. The cottage was very clean and spacious. it had everything we needed to self cater a couple of nights in and entertain the children. The additional games room was a converted garage space, but also doubled up as a 'wet dog room' after the times when we had got back and the dogs were a bit wet from the hill walks. The rooms were bigger than i expected and we had a choice of twin or double beds prior to our arrival. my mum and dad were very pleased with the main bedroom and ensuite, and the rest of us shared the family bathroom which worked well. i cannot say anything negative about this really. i would thoroughly recommend it to any family short break or holiday. you will need a car to travel to lots of nearby attractions but that is the same as any other place like this. The contact we had from the owner prior to our stay was also a lovely touch. thank you for making it a great experience

Perfect setting in a pretty hamlet. Decorated and furnished to a very high standard. Very comfortable beds. Convenient to Monmouth and Forest of Dean. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we will be booking the cottage again next year.

Ganarew Cottage was a very comfortable and well maintained property. Weather was poor but the cottage was warm and cosy.

We spent a comfortable few days in a run up to Christmas in Ganarew Cottage. The cottage was surprising large and was well equipped & although the weather was poor with rain every day, the cottage was warm and cosy. Unfortunately the weather was not cold enough to use the wood burner in the living room, but that would have added to the cosy atmosphere. The kitchen was well equipped and all the appliances were nearly new and working well. Everything was clean and in good order. On arrival finding the locally made cake and jam was a nice touch. The Wi-Fi is always a necessity these days but finding Netflix on the TV was a bonus. The beds were very comfortable and the bedding clean and crisp. Thanks

Last year, 2014, our extended family of 8, ranging from 12 - 80 years old, plus 2 dogs, had a break together in a wonderful cottage in Hay-on-Wye. It went so well that we decided that, rather than buying Christmas presents for each other this year, we would have another holiday together. We were so disappointed to find that our cottage in Hay-on-Wye was already booked as it had been perfect for all our needs and we were not confident that anywhere else could equal it. How wrong could we be !! We’ve just spent the last week of October, half term, at Ganarew Cottage and had an absolutely marvellous time from start to finish. The cottage is exactly as lovely as it sounds in the site description, even lovelier than it looks in the photographs and from the outside you wouldn’t imagine just how spacious it is. As the online descriptions are so accurate there is no need to reiterate how very beautifully it has been refurbished and decorated or how everything facility wise is provided, but the following, are observations that made the cottage so good from our points of view. The milk, tea bags, coffee, bread, jam and utterly delicious cake waiting for us on our arrival were such a nice touch. The pictures around the cottage are all lovely, including one of birds in the 3rd bedroom which is especially so, the lighting throughout is beautifully designed, dimmers on all the dining room and lounge lights to create exactly the mood required at whatever time of day or night and there are delightful light shades in the bedrooms some of which send lovely patterns onto the walls and ceilings. ( we are currently trying to find where we can buy a similar one ! ) In these days, where practically everyone travels with technology of one sort or another, there are plenty of power points all around so no struggle between having the bedside lamp on or charging your phone to tablet. Although warned on the website that mobile reception can be tricky at the cottage, we had no loss of service at all ( EE, Orange and GiffGaff ) and the wifi worked really well, making FaceTime calls possible all over the cottage ( except in the games room and the ensuite bedroom, but this wasn’t a problem ). Ganarew Cottage is a fabulous base to explore this part of the world, but even if you didn’t want to leave the cottage, the views from all the windows are beautiful and the overiding atmosphere of the cottage is peaceful and cosy and we found we were able to get a delivery from Sainsburys using their online order and delivery service. We made up an order from home, arrived late at night at the cottage and received the delivery by 7.45 the next morning. The driver had had no problems finding the cottage. The tap water at the cottage is delicious, no need for bottled water and the second fridge in the games room is a real bonus, very, very useful when you are a large party. Using a flier from the information desk in the cottage we ordered a meal from The Raduni Indian Restaurant and Take Away. They delivered to the cottage and it was an exceptionally lovely meal. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ganarew Cottage and would be thrilled to think we’d make it back there again in the future.
