Once an old coach house, this cottage tucked away in the Suffolk countryside is the perfect rural getaway for two. It's set within the grounds of Belchamp Hall – a Queen Anne period house that's been in the host's family since 1611 – and has charming period features inside that hark back to its heritage. South-facing windows flood the cosy living area with natural light, creating a warm and inviting place to unwind. After a long hike in the countryside, there's nothing better than resting weary legs on the sumptuous leather sofas, a glass of wine in hand as you snuggle up in front of the wood-burner. Let your culinary skills run wild in the quaint kitchen, cooking up delicious meals to enjoy around the oversized wooden table or outside in the garden when the weather is nice. Upstairs, a vast master bedroom – complete with original wooden beams – is the ideal spot to retire to after a busy day, while the sleek bathroom has a built-in bathtub that's excellent for an evening soak. Being situated in the middle of an old family estate means there are miles of footpaths to stroll, plus a communal tennis court where you can channel your inner Andy Murray. Drive twelve minutes into Sudberry for restaurants, shops and pubs, or for more variety, visit Ipswich, Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea – all roughly an hour away by car.

About Dedham Vale

Taking a wooden clinker boat out onto the River Stour on a pleasant day has to be one of the most romantic English experiences you could picture – that is, until you bump into a bank as you glide backwards. Horse chestnut trees hang over the banks and meadows stretch out in either direction. The waterway is the focal point of Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that...
