• "We had a lovely, peaceful stay at Badgers Sett in Winston."

  The lodge is cozy, well-equipped, and perfect for unwinding, surrounded by beautiful countryside and wildlife. It’s also in a great spot for exploring, with Raby Castle and Barnard Castle just a short drive away, plus many places to eat nearby. One of our highlights was parking at Bowlees Visitor Centre, then walking from Low Force waterfall on to High Force waterfall and back one afternoon, a stunning route! The owners, Mary and Steve, were so welcoming, contacting us before our stay to see if we wanted the hot tub ready for our arrival, then on arrival we found a few lovely touch’s, such as milk, biscuits, tea/coffee, and a couple of bottles of fizz waiting for us. If you’re looking for a relaxing break with thoughtful hosts and plenty to see nearby, this is a fantastic choice!

• "An absolutley fantastic get away."

  Stevens hospitality is superb, having the hot tub fresh and ready upon our arrival. We even got a call from him saying the cabin was ready much earlier which is superb service in itself. Beautiful scenery tranquil and calming. Would recommend badgers sett to anybody.

  Fantastic hosts and superb accommodation. The attention to detail was amazing - even given dog towels and rugs. Hot tub ready for us on arrival. • "The perfect place for a break."

  Beautiful lodge, very authentically furnished. Perfectly appointed with everything we needed. We loved the views from the hot tub. Little touches set accommodation apart nowadays and this had some which was welcomed. Our hosts were very friendly and even had our hot tub ready to get straight into on arrival.

• "Another fantastic stay in the Badgers Sett."

  This has to be one of thee most peaceful and tranquil locations I have ever stayed. Definitely an added bonus that we can bring the dog along too. It wont be our last visit that's for sure. Whilst a short drive plenty of places to eat, and places to visit the lodges themselves are so quiet with the only noise coming from the local wildlife - bliss. Home from home with everything thought of, well equipped kitchen (better choice of utensils than my own!) all I need to do is pack clothes and food, perfect. Steve welcomed us for both of our stays and ensured the hot tub was ready for us arriving. Looking foreward to the next visit.

• "The Badgers sett was the perfect get away."

  Idyllic location and the lodge was exactly as described. Was lovely sitting on the veranda of an evening listening to the river and the wildlife. This truly is a peaceful retreat. The lodge was perfectly equipped with all the essentials we required, wifi worked well and the hot tub and fire were cosy. Wood, sticks and fire lighters are all provided for the hot tub which was amazing. Car parking was great with each lodge having its own allocated parking. Lots of amazing walks right on the doorstep. Steven was friendly and informative. He made us feel right at home and couldnt of been more helpful. Will definitely be returning soon.

• "If you are looking for a relaxing "away from it all" break, this is THE place to go."

  The cabins are beautifully fitted out with everything you need including a privately positioned wood fired hot tub. Love sitting out on the porch in the evening just listening to the wildlife and nearby river. To top it all, the hosts Steven & Mary are simply the best, really make you feel welcome and at home and could not be more friendly or helpful. We love coming to Badgers Sett and would not think of going anywhere else for a break.

  Well it was lovely to see you both again. The fact that you return to stay with us regularly, really gives us a spring in our step as we do try to make sure everyone that stays has a relaxing and enjoyable time. • "Hi all, I’ve never done a review before I think it deserves one, I turn up later than expected but still greeted with a smile and view, after Steven showed me everything about the cabin and a already heated hot tub, he showed me a vey big fenced field with access to a small water fall where Vinnie could run, it’s so quiet you can hear the river in the distance when I’m in the hot tub, If I ran low of logs to fuel the hot tube they were more than happy to provide more, if you’re looking for rural it’s probably the place to be."

• "My husband and I went for a three night break in Badgers Set."

  It was a wonderful experience. The owners were incredibly helpful and friendly; showing us around the hut and how to warm the hot tub. They phoned us in advance of us arriving to ask our estimated arrival time so that the hot tub could be warmed. There was a folder containing helpful information about the facilities and local amenities. We brought along our Labrador who had a welcome pack of his own waiting for him with throws for the furniture, treats and bowls. The setting was absolutely ideal for relaxing in a ‘get away from in all’ place. I was initially worried that the hot tub would not be private enough, but the careful layout of the huts meant that it absolutely was. While enjoying the hot tub, we were able to hear only a small waterfall near by and enjoyed a clear sky and all the stars! The hut itself was spotless with beautiful fixtures and fittings. It was warm and comfortable, with both central heating and a gas log burner. There is a large parking space allocated to each hut with well maintained pathways to each hut. Whilst we were there, we enjoyed nice walks in the local area and visited the nearby small towns. In the town we bought a picture of an owl, drawn by a local artist, to remind us of an amazing barn owl that flew overhead whilst we were in the hot tub. We would not hesitate to recommend Badgers Hut, we had the best time. Thank you.

• "Wow what a stay!"

  5* doesn’t even do it justice. Mary and Steven are fabulous hosts and couldn’t do enough for us. We were greeted by Mary who showed us around the lodge and left us some Prosecco and biscuits which went down a treat. We were also fortunate enough to see the northern lights during our stay. • "Beautiful log cabin with high quality fittings."

  There are three cabins very carefully thought out both inside and out to give you privacy from the other two cabins. The wood fired hot tub was superb and even though it was late October we were able to sit out on the veranda for an hour at 8pm after using the hot tub. All in all a wonderful, restful place to stay at any time of year. The owners Stephen and Mary are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. On arriving home we immediately booked the lodge again for June next year. I cannot rate these lodges and the owners highly enough. Although dogs are welcome in the lodges do not be put off if you if you do not have a dog, the lodges were spotless on arrival. Thank you to our hosts Stephen and Mary, we had a great time. See you next year, hopefully the lambs will be out in the fields then.

• "Another lovely relaxing week at Badgers Sett."

  The cabin is beautifully fitted out to a high standard and everything you need is provided. Steven and Mary are perfect hosts, always available to help or for a chat but never intrusive. This was our fifth visit to Badgers Sett, but it won't be our last. I think that says it all.

  As always it was lovely to see you both again and we can not thank you enough for choosing to stay with us again. You know the ropes better than we do now and that’s great. • "I actually dont know where to start with the review."

  We had the most perfect break at Badgers Set Cabin. Its been a stressful 6 months and I actually only buried my mum two days before we arrived. This place has given me time to reflect, repair and rebuild my soul. The owners are amazing! Welcomed us and showed us around...lit the hot tub so it was all ready when we arrived. A warm exceptionally clean Cabin. Stocked with all the cooking utensils and crockery you need for cooking on the hob and microwave. Little touches of emergency contact numbers, treats on arrival, a book with local restaurants, pubs, places of interest and much more. Our dogs loved being able to walk through the fields and go down to the stream in the woods. So if you are looking to relax, unwind, recharge your batteries.or explore further afield....then this is the place. We didnt want to leave!!!!!..I could have stayed another week. We will definitely be back soon....its just PERFECT!!!! Thank you to the owners for helping me through this difficult time .

• "Running a busy pub business we were looking for a quiet short break away from life!"

  ! We found it here at alwent farm! Stephen greeted us on arrival and was very warm and welcoming. He showed us the lodge which was perfect and he had already fired up the wood fired hot tub. Another nice little touch, was the mini prosecco in the fridge alongside a handwritten tag wishing us a lovely stay. We were then left to our own devices, peace and quiet not bothered or hassled but help was right there if required!! The lodges, although in close proximity to each other, had more than enough privacy and seclusion! I would 100% return to stay here again. The surrounding areas are magnificent and beautiful adding to the whole experience, just be prepared to get back to nature and put on your exploring boots.

  Badgers Sett was so clean, well equipped and maintained,as we're the grounds. Steve and Mary were the perfect hosts who went above and beyond for us, we had car issues and they took us to a garage and even gave us a lift to Barnard Castle. Sitting in the hot tub with your loved one, watching the sun go down with a glass of champagne in that gorgeous setting it really doesn't get much better. A gem of a find,we didn't want to leave,we will definitely be recommending and returning.

• "What an absolutely stunning location."

  The layout of the cabins allows you privacy. Steven and Mary were both extremely accommodating and approachable. A phone call the day before to see if we wanted the hot tub on for us arriving, a welcome info pack in the cabin including little bottles of Prosecco and biscuits and even a goody bag for the dog. We thoroughly enjoyed our quick break and are looking at returning soon for a longer period. We have recommended the cabins to family already.

  We received a lovely warm welcome on arrival and everything we needed to know about the lodge was explained to us. There’s a fab information folder in the lodge with everything from local history information to food recommendations. The lodge itself was immaculate and all facilities such as the shower etc were great. We were provided with lots of wood for the hot tub and also a lovely bottle of wine and biscuits! :) We were recommended the Brownlow Arms for a pub lunch and it was great. Proper pub food!   Dog friendly place too with some really thoughtful touches like dog blankets and bowls to use during the stay. Frank especially loved the open field he could run and play in! The owners were lovely - really helpful and friendly. The location was perfect too with lovely walks on the doorstep or some interesting places to visit close by. We would love to come back!

• "Well what can I say apart from WOW!"

  .. my partner and myself booked for Xmas week to get away from the hussel and bustle and was nothing but an escape to relax and chill .. chill we did .. the cabin was immaculate..few seasonal decorations still had us in the Xmas mood .. the hot tub was on everyday and Steve brought us more logs for the burner we used alot lol .. All info on surrounding area places to eat or takeaways .. I recommend the pizza delivery ☺️.. the cabin is beautifully placed and very private ..we never seen a soul .. next to the cabin there's a huge field on the farm land which the owner Steve allowed our 2 dogs to run free ..they even swam in the river at bottom of the field .. We sat outside with our blankets and listened to the river flow and birds tweeting .. and because there is no artificial light ( street lights / road

  The surroundings are serene and the lodge itself is cosy but modern. The owners were very warm and welcoming, making sure the log burning hot tub was ready to use on our arrival and had even decorated the lodge with Halloween decorations for my daughter.   The property was amazing and perfectly secluded. It is also in a lovely location with a lot of nice surrounding walks. Everywhere was kept spotless and it was very comfy and cosy.   The build quality, fit and finish of the property was top notch. The property is extremely private, very quiet and romantic. The wood fired hot tub was epic and our dog Ronnie loved the freedom of running about in the field adjacent to the river. The owners made us very welcome. The layout is exceptional and very cleverly designed and laid out. We cant thank them enough and will be returning without any doubt.   The owners seem to have put a lot of thought into the planning of the site. I would have liked the use of a small oven in the lodge and upgraded bedding. But these are minor points, as overall the lodge was exceptional and would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing break. The owners were brilliant, helpful, and very welcoming.

• "Great! Very clean property, cleverly designed exterior layout ensures privacy."

  Down to earth and genuinely friendly host, always busy keeping things ship shape. Some really thoughtful arrival and interior design touches, courtesy of Steven's wife - loved them, thank you. Our very large, 3 yr old rescue dog, is excitable in new surroundings but we were able to secure him on a 10 metre training lead and he still couldn't see other guests, given the grassy bank between cabins, which relaxed him perfectly. One afternoon we were saying how impressed we were with the hosts, just as a paraglider passed overhead - we both said "that'll be Steven" making a delivery! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay - calm happy dog = calm happy people. Have already recommended to friends and will definitely be back.

  You can watch the sunset in the hot tub every evening. So peaceful, no noise pollution and a brilliant location to see the stars on a clear night! • "Our stay at Badger’s Sett was amazing, everything we could have asked for."

  We were looking for a holiday perfect for our two anxious dogs and we found the place here. It was so quiet, reserved and private. Steve got the hot tub ready upon our arrival and even while we were out on walks (Teesdale way and Barnard Castle river walk are great to do) we came back to a fully loaded burner. A dog bag was provided for the dogs, plenty blankets and towels for us. Milk, short bread and Prosecco were left in the lodge ready for us to enjoy. Our only feedback would be to maybe keep spare soft pillows in the wardrobe, but that’s just preference! Could not fault it at all and really a 5* stay. Thanks again.

• "We were made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived and shown how to work the items in the cabin/ hot tub."

  It was added to the homely feel of staying on a working farm. When we got there Steven was attending to some lambs being born. The cabin and hot tub are perfect and we had plenty of logs for our stay to keep the hot tub to a temperature we were comfortable with. There is a lot to explore loacally, we took a walk to Raby Castle and then went a little further out to the coast. It is a very picturesque area and the farm only adds to it all. It is dog friendly, be aware you will be sharing the green space with the other cabins, even though your area is private, be aware if you have a dog that wanders. We will be staying again in the future.

• "Our break in Badgers Sett was just perfect."

  The location is fabulous with beautiful views from the property. As Badger lodge is at the end we were not over looked at all. The attention to detail in the lodge was exceptional. Kitchen, bathroom, fire, huge bed all were faultless. Even a bag of items for the dog was provided - bowls, towel, blanket, poo bags. The hot tub was ready for our arrival and throughout the break, the owner kept the burner topped up. Beautiful evenings spent in the hot tub - plastic glasses provided for drinks and the clearest sky full of stars. The owners were so helpful and friendly, offering advice and conversation but only on our initiation and not intrusive at all. Would recommend without reservation to anyone!

• "Perfect from start to finish!"

  The lodge has everything you need and is beyond cosy. The hot tub steals the show looking out on open countryside, if it’s relaxation you want this is the place. Steven the owner set up the hot tub for us everyday and was helpful every step of the way. We went for our honeymoon and when we left had a gift on our car windshield, which was obviously unexpected and above and beyond! Can’t wait to come back : )

• "A lovely little set up with three lodges, suitably separated to give some privacy."

  Steve the owner called us earlier on arrival day to see what time we'd be arriving and had the log burner hot tub fired up so we could soak away the travelling. The cabin itself is spacious enough for two. Big comfy bed, a large shower. Kitchen has all you need with a two ring hob, microwave and health grill for cooking provided but no oven. It's a new place having only just opened in December but he is building a separate cabing to house a bar which wil be open later in the year. The location itself is great with Barnard Castle on 7 miles away, Durham, Darlington and the coast all under an hours drive. Loads of local walking for those who do like a wander. A little gem that we hope to get back too sometime soon.

  The lodge was amazing and had so many little touches that showed the owners had gone above and beyond to make it a good stay. The fire and heating were fantastic, the bed comfortable and spacious, lovely large shower and the hot tub! Well it was brilliant, and having it pre-lit for our arrival was a lovely touch. I notice another reviewer suggested stepping stones from the tub to lodge, we didn’t need these as we took some flip flops each but whilst we were there these were added, clearly listening to feedback and looking to make everyone’s stay as enjoyable as possible. We’ve already recommended the lodge to numerous friends and family and would love to come back again. We’ve visited a few lodge/hot tub locations and this is by far the best we’ve ever stayed in. Steven the host is brilliant - thank you for such a lovely stay! If you book this holiday you will not be disappointed.

• "Badger's Sett at Alwent Hall was EXACTLY what I'd been wanting for well over a year."

  It was immaculate, comfortable and warm. The views over the surrounding farm land were incredible and the wood fired hot tub was definitely the highlight for me. Alwent Hall is quite easy to navigate to and find. There is a huge white stone at the top of the driveway that indicates where you need to turn in. There is also ample parking for large cars in the designated accommodation spaces. Alwent Hall is conveniently located between the Yorkshire Dales and Pennines National Park so ensure you plan a long enough stay to explore all they have to offer! Steven is a gracious host (he called me on the day of my stay to ask if I wanted the hot tub heated up!) and very easy to talk to, with plenty of life stories if you want to hear them - at the same time, he will happily leave you be to enjoy your time there on your own (unfortunately we did not get to meet his wife, Mary). There is a lovely pizza restaurant in the nearby town that delivers right to your lodge doorstep and the local pub, The Brownlow Arms, was a typical country pub that served AMAZING food. The one and only suggestion we have to improve (this does not affect our stay at all, just a nice comfort addition) is to add stepping stones from the door to the hot tub. The gravel was a little sharp under foot! Thankfully the distance from the hot tub to the lodge isn't far at all. I believe this place is ideal in winter and summer! We will absolutely return when the weather is warmer so we can enjoy a drink on the deck overlooking the rolling hills, stream and surrounding farm land. Overall, the lodge and its setting at Alwent Hall was a gorgeous, calming environment and I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering a hot tub/nature walk/log cabin getaway. I left feeling totally relaxed.
