Venture across the water on the seasonal passenger ferry to the fishing village of Appledore (5 miles by car) with its maze of narrow lanes, brightly painted cottages, and quayside. Westward Ho! (5 miles) boasts 2 miles of sand and is great for surfing. Visit the market town of Bideford (4 miles) with its shops and restaurants, or step aboard HMS Oldenburg for boat trips to Lundy.
