Holiday Rental Description

Holiday home
The property's unusual name was coined during the Second World War when the rear of what is now the kitchen was used as a telephone exchange. The sleek, modern interior of this cottage offers WiFi and great accommodation for a total of four people - sleeping arrangements being one double bedroom and one with adult bunk beds - and is only a short walk from local amenities, including excellent traditional pubs, local restaurants, intriguing curiosity shops, and an ice-cream parlour.

Accomodation Details
Two bedrooms: 1 x double, 1 x adult bunk (sleeps 2). Shower room with shower, basin & WC. Fitted kitchen with small dining table. Sitting room with electric fire.

Area
Situated in the heart of the picturesque Peak District National Park, the lovely village of Tideswell enjoys beautiful surroundings. Famous for its church, "The Cathedral of the Peaks", which was dedicated to St John the Baptist, the village is also noted for its unique well-dressing and carnival wakes. With the Peak District always a favourite amongst ramblers, there are some excellent hill walks over the northern rugged peaks and the gently undulating hills of the southern dales. Only a fifteen minute drive away is the popular spa town of Buxton, whilst closer to home are the charming Mam Tor and Castleton, though with a variety of fine country inns, excellent restaurants, a chemist, a butchers and a bakers shop, you might never need to leave the village of Tideswell.

Region
The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

Amenities
Gas central heating with electric fire. Electric oven, gas hob, microwave, fridge, washing machine, TV, DVD, CD player, library of books/games/CDs, WiFi. Fuel & power inc. in rent. Bed linen & towels inc. in rent. Roadside parking opposite cottage. Off road parking within hundred yards. Sorry, no pets & no smoking. Shop & pub 1 min walk. Note: Arrival time at this property is 4pm.

Direct communications with the owners was excellent & really prompt by email.. The cottage was really clean & all the additional COVID procedures were clearly communicated, understandable & well facilitated. The traffic on the road outside took some getting used to but had been explained so to be expected. Would definitely use this location again.

An excellent rental. The facilities were more than adequate. Three pubs serving food within walking distance. A restaurant/bar at the Courtyard just past the George which is quite upmarket but do excellent takeaway pizzas. A Co-op, Post office and Chip shop. Buxton is not far if you require more. Ideal for walking or just as a base to visit the surrounding area.

It was so refreshing to get an email from the owners of Exchange Cottage within hours of booking, introducing themselves and giving further information (so much better than having to try and contact the owners a couple of days beforehand which seems to be the norm).. Exchange Cottage is in a great location centrally located in the village with a cafe next door, a fantastic chippy a couple of doors down and a Co-op just around the corner. There were also buses to catch that stopped through the village going to Buxton, Bakewell and even Meadowhall!. The cottage itself was cosy with a comfortable bed and soft sheets. The main disappointment for us was the shower, as the water would suddenly go stone cold for no apparent reason. One shower was enough for this most unpleasant experience and this is the reason we would not return.

A well equipped cottage (with full instructions for everything).. We had no problems with noise (commented on in some reviews) - even in the bedroom facing onto the road. Through traffic does not go through the village and the buses do not run late. Tideswell is a good location for walking in the Peak District, at the intersection of bus routes. Exchange Cottage is ideally located in the village: close to the centre and the bus stops. Check bus times as they are not very frequent. We had 6 days walking in the area without using our car.

The cottage was excellent for two people.. Comfortable and well equipped in every way. Being on the main road was a little noisy at times, but the location within the Peak district made up for that. Very close to Chatsworth, Monsal trail, Ashford in the water, Padley Gorge and many other lovely places.

The cottage was lovely, with everything we needed.. The village is also a very good, and beautiful, base with which to explore the local area. Would highly recommend.

A delightful cottage in the heart of Tideswell village that is immensely proud of its heritage.. Ideally situated for visiting all areas of the Peak District National Park. The owners have gone to great lengths to make the cottage homely and welcoming and there is an abundance of information on the surrounding areas to help plan your days out. Local shops and pubs are all within walking distance, plus a fish & chip shop and two cafes so shopping and dining out is very convenient.

The cottage was in a great location in terms of accessibility to all main tourist places, however, I was shocked how busy the road was where the cottage was situated.. There were really huge articulated lorries going quite fast past the window, and I would have been nervous if my children were younger as there isn't much pavement. I am not sure if there is a quarry nearby but it felt wrong that such large vehicles were able to storm through a tiny village. I was also surprised to find out there was no outside space at all, not even a back door (not sure if this is even legal?). We didn't necessarily expect a garden but as a smoker, I had nowhere to stand outside at all, other than in the path of an articulated lorry! I am not saying that the owners should cater for smokers, it clearly says it is non-smoking, however, I would have made different choices if I had been given that information. Overall, the cottage was clean, comfortable and presentable and we really enjoyed our stay. However, I would not re-book due to those factors above.

When initially booking, I entered the specific dates I wanted to book.. However, the website is defaulted to emcompass a range of +/- 3 days to these days. This was confusing and resulted in different dates being booked. I had to telephone Sykes Cottages to rearrange, and whilst the staff I spoke to were lovely and very helpful, the website should recognise that if a customer enters specific dates then it should not automatically default to a greater range of date. As a first time user of the website, I found it awkward.

The Cottage itself and facilities are very good. However ......... the situation of the property is far from ideal. To start with it is on the main road through Tideswell, for a small village it is very noisy with speeding cars a huge lorries passing through right outside the window. Then !!!! the icing on the cake ! there is a very noisy, rowdy neighbor living right next door. You can quite plainly hear them walking up and down their stairs from the master bedroom in Exchange Cottage, Its like they're in the room. Thumping around on the floors from next door, conversations and shouting are quite clearly audible, as is loud music. Talking to the locals. this person is well known for being a nuisance, We were kept up until 2am on our Friday and 4am on the Saturday/Sunday morning. Definately not recomended, avoid at all costs if you want peace !

Exchange Cottage was perfect for our requirements. It is very warm and comfortable after cold January days exploring the surrounding Derbyshire Dales. The cottage is well located near the centre of Tideswell, and within walking distance of Tideswell Dale, Cressbrook Dale, Millers Dale and Monks Dale. All beautiful and each with its own distinct character. We would love to come back to Exchange Cottage in each season to see the dales change through the year. Brilliant holiday.

Lovely cottage in the heart of the village. Cafe next door with gorgeous ice cream. Fish and chip shop nearby. Well equipped with everything you need. Only downside was no wifi and the shower head needed cleaning/descaling. Wouldn't stop me staying there again though. Excellent base for exploring the Peak District.

The cottage was well equipped and in a good location for walks and attractions. It had all the comforts of your own home. The bedrooms were a good size though the kids room overlooked a busy road. A nice shower room and lovely kitchen with washing machine. Would certainly recommend the cottage for a short stay. Directions could have been a little clearer as to the exact location of the cottage.

This immaculate and otherwise comfy cottage would be lovely, but is based on the main road through Tideswell, and at a bottleneck on that main road. If you're prepared for almost constant traffic (including trucks, lorries and buses) stopping and then accellerating right outside living room window, that's fine. But it came as a bit of a shock to us and we've since found out the village is a known rat run outside of winter. Also next door neighbour's dogs howl at night. One day of our stay he played a rock CD at 4.30am at full volume. Owner was good and got police round, but not what you expect to have to deal with on holiday. Such a shame because apart from the awful road and the neighbour this would be a great and good value holiday cottage. We would consider staying in Tideswell again, but not on the main road.
