For those who prefer fine dining to pub fare, there is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. At Ulverston's Dickensian Christmas Festival in late November, in addition to its reputation as a festival town, you'll find everything from flag walks and art and music festivals. It's the hometown of Stan Laurel and the site of the world's largest foam pie fight, giving visitors a taste of this friendly, family-oriented community. The town and surrounding countryside offer many opportunities for leisurely strolls, and from here you can see the southern Lake District and Morecambe Bay. There's a lovely pub at the end of the shortest, deepest, and widest canal, which makes for a lovely afternoon stroll and offers views of the bay. The National Park's attractions can also be easily accessed.
Sand beaches and excellent birdwatching await visitors to the Furness Coast. In addition to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park and Lakes Windermere and Coniston, the Birkrigg Common area is a popular destination for families with its stunning views of Morecambe Bay.
