Holiday Rental Description

This spacious manor house is set in 4 acres of landscaped gardens with views to the Pennines. It is located in the village of Morland in the heart of the beautiful Eden Valley, just 9 miles south of the market town of Penrith where a West Coast Main Line railway station with trains to London and Scotland can be found. Enjoy a wander around the historic town of Appleby, 7 miles away. From May to September, why not enjoy a swim in the open air pools at either Shap or Askham. Equestrian enthusiasts will find lots of centres locally, where hacks can be booked to take in some of the local countryside, or if you enjoy a spot of golf, there are local courses in Appleby and Penrith. Head into the Lake District National Park for the day (within 6 miles), where you can enjoy a visit to Lowther Castle, paddleboard on Ullswater or take a trip on a steamer and visit Aira Force waterfall. This Grade II listed house dates to Tudor times but much of its character derives from it being in the same family since 1828. It is a great place to celebrate in style or simply spend quality time together with friends and family. As soon as you enter the oak panelled front hall you will be swept back into a former age. On the ground floor, the inner hall contains a comfortable sitting area around a wood burning stove. The large drawing room has a lovely working fireplace at one end of the room and an attractive decorative fireplace at the other end. The room seats 19 in comfort on sofas and contains a 1913 Bechstein grand piano which guests are welcome to play. It has 17th century oak chimney pieces and is hung with family portraits. Across the hall is the dining room which can seat 16 at one splendid mahogany table. An oak refectory table can be used as a side table for carving, and an alcove contains a smaller table seating up to 6. The open fire makes this a warm welcoming room for a special dinner. The family kitchen is well equipped with a beautiful oak dresser and grandfather clock which stands guard over a round oak dining table, ideal for informal breakfasts and teas. The utility room off the kitchen contains a second dishwasher, a washing machine, a tumble dryer, a second fridge, and a tall freezer. Steps lead down to the back door. There is a separate catering kitchen which can be booked on request for outside caterers. The snug has a TV, DVD player and a wide selection of books; it is the perfect spot to get away from the crowd and relax. There is a WC off the hallway, and a games room, complete with pool table, darts, and many games, jigsaws, and puzzles. It also has a 40" TV, DVD player and music system with seating a great place to watch a big match. Every room in the house is full of history, the property has a fascinating variety of paintings, books, antiques and taxidermy. The bedrooms are scattered over the first floor and are accessed via stairs and steps. Three of the bedrooms are en suite and there are three other family bathrooms. There is a private, enclosed lawned garden with patio, table, chairs and a BBQ. There's a lockable room for storing bicycles, and a room full of outdoor games equipment. The house gardens, which are open to the public, are a very special feature, with four acres of lawns, kitchen garden, rose garden and herbaceous borders. Steps lead down to the stream and a children's wonderland with riverside walks, waterfalls and secret Victorian quarry rock garden complete with grotto. There is a croquet lawn that children and adults of all ages will love.
