Area
Brough is a small town in the Eden Valley, roughly four miles north of Kirkby Stephen and eight miles east of Appleby-in-Westmorland, at the foot of the North Pennines. Church Brough, on a former Roman road, was the backdrop for Norman Brough Castle (formerly the site of a Roman camp), while Market Brough, on a mediaeval route, is a twin settlement. The contrast between the two settlements is due to the duties they originally performed; Church Brough's dwellings are centred on a market square with a maypole, whereas Market Brough has a long and wide main street. The village's claim to fame stems from its role as a coaching town for the England-Scotland route in the 18th and 19th centuries, when more than ten inns served to the stagecoach trade.

Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

Absolutely horrendous. Damp , dirty , mouldy. Whole house smelt of damp. Booked this house for a Xmas stay. Paid over double the usual cost as it was over the Xmas period. £1500 down the drain. Was supposed to be staying for a week but left on Boxing Day as couldn’t take anymore. On arrival heating had been put on high. I guess to try and disguise the dampness. Noticed a lot of marks on the wall and looked like it hadn’t been decorated in years. Patches of paint had come off walls. Obvious signs that there had been previous leeks. Mould up walls. To my horror on opening kitchen drawers. Knives and forks all mouldy and a wooden spoon all covered in mould. Smoke alarms upstairs were beeping as battery had obviously run out. On taking them down there was a sticker on it saying change in 2016 !!! Toy box in living room which smelt terrible. Could t lock front door so we couldn’t leave the house altogether. Party of 11 including children. Was a health hazard with all the mould. Advertises for 11 people only 8 dinning chairs so caused issues for our Xmas lunch to all sit together. Had to do a deep clean and put everything in the dishwasher to try and make the most of our Xmas. As well as celebrating Xmas also was my nieces 1st birthday. Left before this and had to make different arrangements. Totally spoiled what should have been a lovely family trip away. On the first day I contacted the owner on what’s app as I’d used this to obtain instructions on keys and check in. Owner apologised and said he would sort and get in touch with cleaning company. . Then went on the say he wouldn’t have his phone on him as it was going in for repair. Now after weeks his excuse to the holiday company I used to book is that I didn’t make the cleaning company aware of the situation so he knew nothing about it ( have screen shots of what’s app messages and call logs to prove he did ) I could go on. Booked through a holiday cottages company in process of complaints procedure. Owner stopped responding to me. Has admitted the state of the property but refuses to offer any sort of compensation. So now have to take things further. Never leave bad reviews usually I’ve been fair and given time for the owner to respond and compensate us but I’ve ran out of patience and people need to be warned before booking this property.

We were booked in very last minute due to an issue with a different property we were supposed to be staying at. The host was very accomodating at short notice and was very helpful and responsive throughout our stay. The property itself is really nice, has everything you need, plenty of space, and really comfortable beds. The village of Brough is small but charming. There are a few pubs, cafés, a chippy, and a castle that i would recommend walking to from the house. Overall had a great stay. Thank you!
