Area The community of Braithwaite is located between the two lovely northern lakes, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. The Coledale Beck runs through the village with whitewashed Lakeland cottages, two village shops, and two real ale Inns, each filled with charm and still maintaining much of its traditional attractiveness. Beautiful Newlands Valley is located between Braithwaite and Buttermere, and scenic Bassenthwaite Lake is must-see. There is truly something for everyone, from a leisurely country stroll to a strenuous walk-up Skiddaw. Take a cruise around the lake or visit Mirehouse, a stately home and grounds with an outdoor theatre on the lake's beaches. Dodd Wood, Derwentwater, the Lake District Wildlife Park, and Keswick with its abundance of attractions are all easily accessible.

Fantastic holiday home right on the edge of Whinlatter Forest. This cottage is in the hamlet of Thornthwaite and is a 5min drive into Keswick. Bedrooms are lovely and all are situated at first floor. 1 x large bedroom with kingsize bed and huge en-suite walk-in shower, 1 x double bed with large en-suite walk-in shower, 1 x double bed which was snug. Main bathroom also situated at first floor, but there is also a further w/c shower room at ground floor level. Utility room off the back door, which I'd say is the main entrance rather than the original property door, which has a good washing machine and tumble dryer. Kitchen is very well stocked with pots and pans etc. The bonus with this property is the open lounge area with tv but also the second reception room with tv, so if the kids want their own space, there's more than enough rooms. We loved the afternoon sun on the patio, and there's plenty of car parking. We took our well behaved dog with us and had no trouble with the open aspect of the garden area, and the neighbours were great (didn't hear any barking from dogs, as suggested in another post). The cottage also has lots of books to read and games to play too, which is always nice to have that option. There is a stream that runs parallel with the property at a lower level which may get pretty noisy depending on the amount of rainfall, but the windows are pretty soundproof, and didn't disturb us during the night. There is also an open access (not gated, so young children should be supervised) with steps leading down to the stream. There was another gate which we were unsure whether it belonged to Ladstock Cottage or the adjoining property, so we never ventured beyond. There wasn't any information on the cottage for the guests only instruction manuals, which would have been handy and a nice personal touch plus the iron board didn't stand up too. I'd definitely recommend this cottage to others.

Ladstock cottage not a great week for us as woken 5 nights out of 7 by dogs howling from neighbours next door. We phoned up Sykes cottages the next morning who asked us to go next door and tackle the neighbours ourselves?? We said no and then Sykes cottages said they’d speak to the owners of the house next door and get back to us which they never did. My review is a honest one if you have young children or dogs it’s a no go it has not gate in the garden so you’re straight onto the lane. Although it’s a dead end car drove up fast the neighbouring properties. Obviously the dogs howling at night and the two bedrooms at the back the beck water was fast so it sounded like you sleeping in a toilet. Enjoy your stay we won’t be returning.
