At the southern end of the lake, where the Lakeside Aquarium and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway are located, Windermere Lake Cruises in Bowness offers a choice of boat cruises and boat rental to Brockhole, Ambleside, and Lakeside. The Old Laundry Theatre and the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction are separated by 1.5 kilometres. It takes 30 minutes to walk to Orrest Head to take in the breathtaking vista of far-reaching views over the lake and nearby fells, which served as the inspiration for Alfred Wainwright to create his series of renowned guidebooks. The historic villages of Grasmere, Ambleside, and Troutbeck are only a short drive away, while Brockhole, which provides high wire tree top activities, is three miles distant.
