Given its excellent position at the northern tip of Lake Windermere - England's largest lake - Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes. The town itself is famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th Century "Bridge House" - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Grasmere and the Langdale Valley are just a short drive away and there is plenty to do here. With cruises, boat trips and water-sports on Lake Windermere itself as well as numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village, visitors will be spoiled for choice. At Waterhead lakeside there is a short stretch of beach for sunbathing, or paddling, whilst in the opposite direction, along a short woodland walk, is the beautiful waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

There is a qualification regarding the state of the property which prevents a 5 star review. But generally positive. The cottage is in a great place, quiet but very close to the town including a great butchers a hundred yards away. Unloading was a bit of a challenge, but don’t panic and the road up to the cottage is manoeuvrable. The parking permit was fine for the car park a couple of minutes walk away, though it gets very busy during the day - but this was in busy July and Ambleside was very busy despite the pandemic restrictions. The cottage is well equipped, comfortable bedrooms and good bathrooms. A nice selection of games and videos. Negatives? It was clear that the regular cleaning had been done adequately, although some of the kitchen implements and glasses had not been washed up properly. Bathrooms were clean. But the place is unloved (maybe because the owner does not stay, but that's just a guess). It could do with a decent spring clean. For example light switches had been wiped, but there was months of dust on top of them. Carpets in less accessible places hadn’t been hoovered for ages, and the insides of the windows had general muck and fly dirt. The garden was tatty - just an hour's tidying up was all it needed. All this is a shame. I recommend getting someone to do a good half day's general clean. Then it would be 5 stars for sure.

Woodbine Cottage is ideally situated in Ambleside, being a very short walk from the town. The access road is very narrow but parking is close by, as is a pub offering a decent meal if guests in the cottage don't wish to cook in the more than adequately equipped kitchen. The downstairs is open plan and provides comfortable seating for a cosy night in. Beds are comfortable and all the accommodation is clean. Having booked through Sykes Cottages, I would not hesitate to recommend this company as all communication was professional, friendly and helpful.

We've just returned from a 4 night break at Woodbine cottage and couldn't fault it in anyway. Five of us stayed in total (4 adults + 1 child) and it was a perfect size for us. The kitchen and living room are a great size as well as being comfortable and well equipped. Everything was clean and tidy, beds comfortable, good decor, high quality fittings in bathrooms and amazing views from master bedroom. Shops are a quick walk away but we were left biscuits, tea, coffee and milk by the owners which was a lovely touch. As well as shops being a few minutes away you also have 2 pubs and a butchers literally a stones throw away - the butchers in particular is great so make sure you do a big fry up at least once with bacon, sausages, black pudding and eggs all from the butchers ( getting hungry now!). There isn't a parking space by the cottage but you have a very narrow road outside the cottage which was fine for loading / unloading the car ( it is narrow with stone walls either side but a ford mondeo with wing mirrors folded in fitted through fine). You also get a parking permit which we picked up from Sykes in Windermere on the way and this works out really well as there is a car park about 50 metres away from the cottage that this enables you to use as well as multiple other car parks across all of the lake districts so if you're travelling about this can save you a small fortune in pay and display charges! Highly recommended and we'd definitely return

We stayed in this cottage for 7 nights. it is well located just 2-3 minuts walk from the center of ambleside but still in a quiet area. the cottage have 3 bed rooms at the upper floor, two with a twin bed and one with a bunk bed. the ground floor have nice sitting area and kitchen.. there is nice fireplace. the cottage is well equipped and maintened. the only minuses that we found was the fact that the cottage dont have privete parking (parking tag in the main parking lot is supplied by the owener) and there is no free wifi. we are highly recommending this cottage

Very nice cottage, warmly appreciated by the whole family. We liked the kitchen, the two bathrooms and three toilets and especially the absolute tranquillity given through the little street in which the cottage is located. Nevertheless all shopping possibilities in the nearest surroundings, parking with the permit no problem and very near the cottage . Ambleside is nice and ideal as a starting point for all kind of activities. Thank you for wonderful holidays.

we really enjoyed our time at woodbine cottage. It is centrally located, two minutes to the nearest pub! it is cosy especially with the log burner going in winter. The cottage has modern decoration and is comfortable. I would definately book again, the sykes agents was friendly and helpful. The only down side was the parking, it was a gamble whether there was space available by the cottage and ambleside has car parks but they can be expensive.Still that said, will still go back again and again.great walking and beautiful countryside any season.
