  • "Upon arrival it was clear that the property had not been properly cleaned and that the previous occupant had left it filthy."

Emergency cleaners were called and we had to fumigate to try and erase the smell of wet dog. The outside, supposedly romantic terrace, was a disgrace and unusable. Soiled, soaking furniture. It had clearly not been maintained for a very long time. Inside, as well as the filthy conditions, there were the following issues; - Broken (and dirty) crockery/utensils - Scalding hot water (temperature switch broken) which was dangerous - Broken bedside light - stained chaises longue - dead flies on all window ledges - dog hair cover the settee - cigarette butts on floor and table outside - moss growing on outside chairs - full rubbish bags on terrace (leaking old milk) This was described as luxury but it was far from it. Sub-standard bedding and towels does not equal luxury. Such a shame as with some TLC this could be so much better.

A warm and cosy apartment in well-loved Ambleside, Old Wool Loft is superbly presented and perfectly located in the absolute heart of this gorgeous slate-built village.

Everything you could desire is in strolling distance, and the wonderful views and supreme luxury will have you rejuvenated in no time.

You even have a wood-burning stove to toast your toes.

A great choice of romantic break for a discerning Lakelovers couple! Luxury dog-friendly Lake District cottages are rare beasts, and this stylish and contemporary apartment allows for one pet to accompany you on your special adventures.

If you do bring your four legged pal, you'll all love the elevated outdoor terrace with high-quality rattan furniture set, a stunning place to sit and watch Lakeland life unfold before you. A wonderful open-plan living space includes both log-burner and large screen TV for intimate evenings in, while the superb bedroom is full of light, with characterful sloped ceilings and skylights for star-gazing, and benefits from an extremely comfortable king-size bed.

It's difficult to decide whether to take breakfast in bed or in the bath here!

That free-standing tub is just crying out for bubbles and bubbly, and it really is a blissful way to ease away the strains of an exciting day out on the high fells. Those enchanting hills surround the village.

Ambleside is a well-known walker's hub, and the scenery really is outstanding.

You can happily ditch the car with the conveniently provided parking permit and walk from your door up Loughrigg and Wansfell, conquer towering Red Screes, or take on the fabulous day hike of the Fairfield Horseshoe, with its unrivalled panoramic views across the Southern Lakes. You can easily wander, too, to all the enticing eateries, baker's shops, wine bars and old Cumbrian inns that Ambleside has to offer.

Zeffirelli's is a jazz bar with attached cinema, and its restaurant offers excellent vegetarian fare; it's great for a romantic evening together, with just a few moments stroll back to your apartment.

Even closer is the cosy Priest Hole restaurant, and the celebrated Michelin-starred Stamp House is just across the road. Day's out can be simply spent perusing the pretty streets and sampling the many attractions of Ambleside, but you can also hop on a steamer at Waterhead and cruise down to Bowness or to stunning Wray Castle on the western shore of Windermere.

Why not hire your own rowboat and take a picnic hamper for a really romantic and relaxed afternoon?

If you do fancy a run out in your car, though, you have the whole of the South Lakes spread out about you; be sure to take a trip to the beautiful Langdale valleys. A true Lakeland love-nest, Old Wool Loft offers the luxury and the location for a thoroughly memorable holiday for two!

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
