The Baltic island of Bornholm has just as many quaint towns as it does rugged, wild coastlines. This mixture of traditional architecture and sandy beaches gives the idea of tropical island life a run for its money – particularly in the gorgeous fishing town of Årsdale. Since the 17th century, people have been catching herring here, which you could also do as a resident of this home – two minutes from its tiny local port. Built in the 1920s, this grand house was renovated in 1999 to high specifications. The unique architecture sees a trapezoid-shaped roof covered in the typical red slates of the region. With lush foliage and a manicured lawn below its sun-soaked terrace, the scene from the exterior could be straight off a postcard. You’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors in one of its many hidden nooks, especially when you can look out to sea views from the raised sections. Inside, a tasteful use of wooden features and furniture creates the hygge experience. The wood-burning stove of course sits in the living space, alongside a bright lounge with a whole library of books to choose from. Get cosy on the plush sofa while the kids stay entertained up in the playroom – perhaps even pour yourself a little glass of mjød.
