Up in Croatia’s rugged mountains, this villa is an escape into nature. Lush pine forests surround this home, so the soundtrack to long lunches on the terrace and dips in the swimming pool is the cheep and pip of birds in the trees, and not a lot else. From the sprawling terrace, you’ve got panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with hazy mountains in the distance. Should the sun get too much, you can close the linen curtains around the gazebo and dine in the shade – there’s an old-fashioned bread oven in here too. The Roman-style swimming pool is finished with a built-in Jacuzzi and there are endless loungers and sofas for relaxing. Inside, it feels like a medley of sleek modernism and Croatian tradition. The pristine white kitchen hides myriad appliances and gadgets for the chef of the group and there’s a selection of local wines in the oak dresser in the dining room. Mid-century furniture in the living room is set around a fireplace for cosy evenings in. In terms of location, you’re secluded away in the countryside here. A five-minute drive down the road, you’ll find the River Cetina, where river rafting is a popular pastime. For day trips, it’s a forty-minute drive to Split where you’ll find the famous Diocletian's Palace and boats ready to whisk you to the idyllic islands.

About Split
With its ramshackle buildings of terracotta roofs, green shutters and sun-bleached stone, the old heart of Split could rival Dubrovnik’s. Diocletian’s Palace dates back to 305 AD and is a meandering old centre of narrow alleys, crumbling columns and pavements worn sleek over time, and it is very much still the buzzing soul of Split. The surrounding Venetian-style streets date back to the days of spice merchants and sailors, and...
