You can always beat the heat indoors with a blast of air-conditioning and flick through the home’s glossy design books. Or sneak away to your bedroom’s shady balcony for some quiet time and a cheeky siesta. At dusk, fire up the barbecue and put on a good spread before settling down for a spell-bounding sunset to commence.

When the cobalt blue waters of the coast finally lure you, head for the charming seaside town of Crikvenica (a ten-minute drive) – its water-edge harbour restaurants and pretty beach backed by shady pine trees are dreamy. Or pack up a picnic and hop over to the island of Krk (a fifty-minute drive), with its old port towns and remote coves for swimming. The scenic drive over the epic Krk Bridge is worth the trip alone.
