On arrival, we discovered that the microwave was not working. It lights up and turn table circulates with buzz but the food is not heating up at all. We reported immediately. We were pleased that Sykes cottage phoned us back promptly to tell us that they would be in touch with the owner. However, we received no update through the week. We were unable to use the microwave. Secondly, the shower was slow to drain and the base was very shallow, which was about to overflow. I had to minimize the use of water, shampoo and body wash, worrying about flooding. I cleaned the drainage hole which had hairs and scum from previous guests, but it did not make too much improvement. I could either wash my hair or use body wash but not at the same time. I washed my hand towel in the separate basin. I couldn't have shower with peace of mind through the week. The kitchen is much smaller than how it appeared on the photo.

The stairs are very steep.. Considering we had an 85 year old Grandad with us this did give us some worries.Luckily he is fairly agile despite having had two knee replacements.

We stayed at Pelham House over Christmas.. We were a bit apprehensive at first as we were planning to cook Christmas dinner for the family and weren't sure if we would have the dinnerware and cookware we would need. The kitchen was perfectly equipped and everything went well and couldn't have been better. The cottage was perfect for our needs once we figured out how to work the central heating. It was a very comfortable and homely cottage with original features and in an excellent location for the town. We took two dogs with us and there were some lovely walks nearby. I would stay at this cottage again. I don't like to be negative about such a nice cottage but perhaps a Christmas tree at that time of year would have been a bonus however such a minor thing wouldn't stop me visiting again.

Pelham House is badly in need of refurbishment. It is NOT shabby chic. Very shabby. Very amateur DIY. Very grubby. Blood stained bed cover. Filthy looking (also blood stained) rag rug in top bedroom. Stairs to upper floor very steep with shallow treads. Grab rails attached to the walls eith clanky chunks of wood. As a relatively agile 60+ I found it just didn't feel that safe. Upper floor toilet and bathroom would meet 1970s standards / expectations ... perhaps. Opportunity to crack your head on the way to the toilet (you need to remember to duck). Person at Lakes Cottage Holidays said (when we went back to complain) that people "either love it or hate it" which suggests something has been very wrong for some time. We were moved to an alternative property and were appreciative of that. Pelham House, whatever it's star rating on the system, is FAR too expensive given how dirty it is. My advice is don't even consider it. We hated it. Horrible. It needs a very thorough deep clean to make it even OK. But even then it would be a dismal place to pay to stay in. Debbie W.

Pleasant accommodation with original features, such as fireplaces in bedrooms etc.. , though we didn't consider using them of course, as the accommodation is centrally heated. We needed to adjust the thermostat from time to time as it was late summer and the heatwave had long gone. One of our party, who is quite an elderly person, wanted a bathroom/toilet on the same level as her bedroom, so she decided the top floor would be best for her. The steps were quite steep, but she managed. One minor thing to point out was a low beam on the top floor which needs a BIG notice on both approaches to it. Once bumped into, a notice wouldn't be required, as you tend to remember, but it's just that initial bump that could be avoided. Also a small pan would be an idea, to help with the environment, and we took all the recycling home, as didn't appear to be a recycling bin.

The cottage was not what we expected.. On arrival The patio area was dirty, the porch needed painting dustbin stank weeds growing rubbish on The ground .this is a sitting out area?first impressions were not good. Now for inside. My wife spent Friday evening wiping the kitchen over all the tops were cleaned with cif the cloth was rinsed twice the water was brown. Shower filfy around the channels.curtain rail came down.the owner needs to look after the house a bit better,it needs love and care clearly it's not getting it,i could go on and on with a list It's not fare for your customers to pay those sort of prices,to be met with a holiday home like this,it Spoils the holiday.I would appreciate a phone call from yourselves or the owner of the house.it's not the cleaners fault Your sincerely J Cookson

Booked Pelham House for a visit to the beer festival. The house is poorly maintained and not clean. It’s in need of massive investment to bring it up to an acceptable standard.
