The cottage was perfect for our family.. *streams, walks a friendly donkey all minutes away (and a great local pub that seems very popular) *Best of both worlds as lakes and Yorkshire dales are close by. (wensleydale cheese factory, James Herriot museum are worth a visit. We booked an adventurous Ghyll Scramble in lakes) *local mountain walks for the bairns (nine standards Rigg) is a short drive away to start and Tourist info in Kirkby Stephen will have good guides to start you off (make the walk less strenuous as you can park quite high up in some areas *cottage was lovely and cosy. We had everything we needed plus WiFi was a bonus for the gadget hubby who brought the fire stick with him. Rainy day movies were easy to play. Owners have also left some DVDs too. *we packed some small games too (uno, dobble) *Forbidden Corner is also a recent fave and well worth travelling to (if you're a big kid) and do the kids treasure hunt.

A lovely cosey cottage in a beautiful setting.. The owners were lovely and live next door to the cottage. Nateby is a pretty little village with a nice dog friendly pub which serves the most fabulous meals. Very well placed for visiting the Lakes and Dales but lots of nice local walks too. Thoroughly recommended.

Loved this holiday! Really lovely owners who live next door and were on hand if needed but equally gave us our own space. Very quiet place to be but good attractions near by which we visited on recommendations from other customers and lovely to get away from busy lives for some peace to rest. Would definitely book again!

We had a great time visiting Cumbria and the Lake District these past 2 weeks.. The cottage was exactly as described and was perfect for my wife and I along with our 2 boys, (12 & 9) On arrival we were met by the owner who showed us around the cottage and gave us some info on the local area, despite being right next door there was no intrusion and we were left to enjoy our break, as we began to unload the car, she said to the boys, these walls are 3 foot thick, make as much noise as you want :-). The cottage had everything we needed from a cooker and microwave to all of the utensils and pots and pans for those nights where we wanted to save a bit of cash and cook in. Bedding and towels were all provided, and on the middle Saturday we were asked if we wanted fresh and clean of everything. The upside down layout of the cottage was amusing to my youngest with the main bedroom and bathroom/shower on the ground floor and kitchen, living room and 2nd bedroom on the 1st floor. The living room was nice and homely and mid way through the holiday we were already dreading having to leave. If you want to want to eat out and have a few drinks, the Nateby Inn, which you can see from the front door of the cottage is a lovely place to spend an evening and have some good food. Im not a regular pub visitor but could happily sit in there for the evening. A short trip down the road is Kirkby Stephen which has some great little shops along with a Co-Op where you can get any bits and pieces you may need, should you need to do any washing there is a good launderette behind the chippy. If you fancy a breakfast I highly recommend the Mulberry Bush. The area as whole is stunning, we travelled out everyday taking in York to the east and then over to St Bees for the beach to the west whilst also taking a motor boat out on Coniston and Derwent and then walking/hiking up The Old Man of Coniston. If you are looking for somewhere to go with your family to see some of the bet sites the UK has to offer, then I would say you have to visit Cumbria and the Lakes and what better place to stay than the Old Cottage in Nateby, I have nothing but good memories of this trip and a few thousand photos.

Our host Jenny and her husband were very friendly & helpful.. Although not walkers we did venture out most days, we also visited many small villages & towns where we were welcomed. In particular we were welcomed warmly by the new owner of the Nateby Inn(Black Bull) not to be mistaken as the Black Bull in Kirby Stephen. Should the Nateby Inn's new owners ideas take off then the area should be well remembered by people dining and drinking there as they pass through or stay overnight.

May 2018
We had a lovely warm welcome from the owners next door who were helpful in storing our bicycles for us in their garage.. The house was very clean and the bedrooms neat and reasonably spacious for a small Cottage. The only drawback was the lack of a large enough space for the table for us 4 adults to all enjoy an evening meal together. The village is very lovely and quiet and full of birdsong at that time of year. Local cycling and walking is excellent, the scenery lovely , and we would definitely go back again.

March 2018
A little disappointed with Old Cottage, it took untill the Sunday evening to get the heating sorted, not good when there is still snow on the ground outside, owners had control of heating, no thermostat in the cottage so had to keep resetting the radiators, only one tea towel, no oven dishes/trays these did arrive when asked, but should have been there from the start, NO oven gloves, which did not arrive, cottage comfortable, but could have been better.. Location fine.

September 2017
The cottage was an upside down cottage ie bedroom bathroom downstairs and lounge and Kitchen with another bedroom upstairs, we kept going the wrong way very quirky but fun.. Good position close to the Nateby Inn, who did some excellent meals, Kirby Stephen was only 5 minutes in the car, with numerous shops to refill your cupboard and that extra bottle of wine. The owners of the cottage Jenny & John were very friendly and living just next door if we needed anything, which we did not, as the cottage had everything we needed nice and warm, great shower and comfy beds, the WiFi worked really well. the area was nice and peaceful, small sitting out area at the front, and room for 1 car at the side of the cottage. we would certainly go back again. Thank you.

August 2017
If people wish to enjoy a quiet break in a well presented cottage, with great owners, in a quiet village, with very friendly locals and a hotel nearby which serves great food at a reasonable price, this is the place to go.. I have no complaints, and I almost forgot the whole area is very dog friendly, with numerous walks. Also there are many small towns to visit within easy driving distance although some of the country roads are rather challenging, but enjoyable, with great scenery.
Mr Turner
July 2017
The owners are very friendly people and can offer you ideas and information on the area, everything was ready early so was able to go straight in on arrival,a very good location for lakes and dales with great walks from the door,we took our small dog with us and he was welcomed everywhere, the local pub 2 min walk away is excellent for meals and dog friendly.. We had a great holiday and would return again

May 2017
I'm definitely going back and have already recommended both the cottage and the area in general to my family.. We may make it a big family trip next time. The owner lives next door and was super friendly and accommodating. The cottage is stuffed with old world charm but up-to-date technology and cleanliness. It's right on the edge of a tiny village, just before the cattle grid and hills. So peaceful.

A very cosy and comfortable cottage, very good location. Could walk from door for some wonderful country walks, also a very short walk to the local pub which was ideal over the New Year period. We arrived to find that all the beds had been made up, also the owner had very kindly provided some basic essentials which were also appreciated.

October 2013
The cottage is away from the more touristy spots so a peaceful stay is guaranteed. Everything is within an easy drive - we stayed with our two kids aged 4 and 16 months and had no trouble at all day tripping to the safari park, World of Beatrix Potter etc. Nateby and the surrounding villages are beautiful. There is nowhere to do a biggish shop in Nateby but you only have to drive for about 7 minutes to reach the nearest Co-op. The cottage is very well equipped. The kitchen is especially well stocked with dishes, pots and pans etc so if you wished to cook every night it wouldn't be a problem. The owners are very helpful. The accommodation is over two levels so we needed a baby gate. We had no sooner asked than one was produced. We would certainly return here. Beautiful part of the world and perfect little bolt hole. The only thing families with young and busy kids might want to note is that there is no enclosed outside space attached to the property. We were out every day so it didn't bother us.

Don't be fooled by the " Oldy worldy " exterior , this is a modern spacious property , with plenty of room for 4 adults .It contains everything you will need for your enjoyable stay . The village of Nateby is small , but welcoming , especially the Nateby Inn , where excellent food and drink is served and the staff go out of their way to help , even including our Rottweiler . ( yes the whole area seems to be dog friendly .) There are plenty of walks locally or you can use the cottage as a base for further afield .Just 10mins walk is Kirby Stephen , where you can find everything you can't get in Nateby. All in all we had a great weeks stay , everything we expected and more . So in the immortal word of arnie "we'll be back !!! "

This was a lovely cottage to stay in. We took Jenny's advice and headed up the Eden Valley when we went to York - just stunning. So this a great base for exploring. The location takes you off the beaten path, which is exactly what you need to do when in the UK, but it's still close enough to the motorway to get places easily. The beds were comfy and the home well equipped. No internet or washing machine - not a problem for a shorter stay :) Jenny and John were friendly and welcoming, but not intrusive :) And the local pub serves great meals :)
