Mermaid Cottage description

Holiday home
Mermaid Cottage is a cosy end terraced cottage just a moment's stroll from the beach, opposite the art gallery in Newlyn. There are two double bedrooms, and a bathroom with bath, shower over, basin and WC. The fitted kitchen has a breakfast area, while the sitting room has an electric fire and leads to the dining room. Outside is a small enclosed courtyard, and parking is available in the public car park 100 yards away. With St Michael's Mount and Newlyn on the doorstep, and the rest of the area within easy reach, Mermaid Cottage makes a wonderful Cornish base.

Area
Newlyn in Cornwall is a fishing port whose buildings cluster around the harbour, and two quays full of boats. There are amenities in the village including a shop and a pub, and the beauty of Cornwall is evident all around this area. The coastal path runs nearby and walkers will enjoy spotting the flora and fauna on land, and perhaps even glimpsing basking sharks and grey seals in the waters. Head to the beaches for excellent surfing, or participate in the many water sports which are on offer in this lovely holiday destination.

Region
Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

The cottage is warm and cosy a real home from home. Location is fabulous and views stunning. Our 2nd year at Mermaid Cottage and will be back next year.

The cottage was very quiet and set in a lovely little village. The cottage was cosy and comfortable and I would visit this cottage again. The garden (courtyard) was enjoyable, relaxing and quite a sun trap.

The cottage had a really welcoming feel to it. Within a couple of hours we felt as if it was our home! The location was excellent and there was a very good pack telling you where all of the local attractions were.

The cottage was walk-able to absolutely everywhere. It was very dog friendly. The fresh fish available from fishmongers was wonderful.

Being a winter holiday the heating in the cottage was very welcome. It was always nice and warm! I would recommend this cottage as an ideal base. Very comfortable property to which we will love to return to.

We have been visiting Penzance area for 35 years annually with our children and now our grandchildren and rented many Cottages and used many rental sites. We founds Sykes website easy to use for someone not particularly computer literate and found booking a click of a button away. The cottage was everything it was descibed and ideal for us with young children and the location was wonderful - practically on the beach and within walking distance of Mousehole and Penzance. It was so fab we have already booked it for 2014.

We particularly liked the location of Mermaid Cottage and its very distinct style it feels more like someones home rather than a holiday cottage.

Loved Penzance and surrounding areas. Cottage comfortable and fabulous location. Garden not really a garden but adequate. Only complaint was that the grill didn't fit the cooker so couldn't grill my bacon in the mornings. Had a fabulous week.

Quirky cosy cottage, has a lovely feel to it but in need of updating especially kitchen and bathroom. Very comfy bed and views over the sea from the bedroom. Had a problem with the hot water but the owners resolved this as soon as they could, these things happen. Cottage as Also in need of a deep clean. Location perfect for exploring the area and lovely to step out of the front door and be on the beach for dog walks. Some traffic noise.

The location of Mermaid Cottage is the best thing about it. Very close to the sea and a small pebble to sand beach. Newlyn has numerous eateries, a few small shops, lots of pubs and an easy walk to both Penzance and Mousehole and also served by a couple of bus routes. The cottage is in bad condition, poorly maintained, damp and generally scruffy. Beds are not comfortable, kitchen barely usable. The best way to describe it would be a grandparents house stuck in the 1970's. All mod cons then but nothing has been improved or maintained. Shower good but mouldy shower curtain hung from a precarious contraption. Net curtain in bathroom torn. Sticky note in windowsill with faded writing, obviously been there a long time and cleaned around. One bed was extremely soft, the other rockhard. Bed lined cheap and very well used, tiny towels with no body to them. Every cupboard opened smelled of damp and long forgotten dusty something indescribable. Stairs felt rickety and the edging strip sharp and hard on bare feet. The carpets are frayed at the threshold. Flimsy, grubby hand made curtains finish the delightful ambience. Not Cornwall's finest. Good job the sun shone and we can have a good time and not be bothered by material things. Beware and book only if you need somewhere convenient and you can cope with a lot less than perfect.

Mermaid cottage is a lovely little end of terrace house in a beautiful location.. Directly opposite the Newlyn Art Gallery and with a stunning view of Mounts Bay and St Michaels Mount, it had every comfort one could possibly need while on holiday. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was very well stocked, the sitting room was very comfortable and cosy. The mermaid and sea scape paintings and other quirky artefacts added to the charm of this property. Two things, however, let it down. The lack of WiFi, which in this day and age is odd as most places offer this as a basic necessity. We tried the art gallery password (which I think is a bit cheeky) but it didn’t work I’m afraid. So my sister and I had to use our mobiles which proved expensive. This really does need addressing I think. Also, the property could really do with a lick of pain to brighten the place up. Especially the stairs and hallway where the dark wood detracts from the seaside theme, and that is a great shame. Other than that, we had a fabulous holiday at Mermaid Cottage and we wouldn’t hesitate in coming back. Thank you.

This is by far the worst holiday home I have ever stayed in, as soon as I walked in I noticed how dirty the place was, didn't even look like it had been hoovered, found a dead moth and a couple flies on the sofa, the sofas were also COVERED in dog hair.. The worst part was the fact I had to clean the bath myself before use as it had multiple hairs and yellow scunge at the bottom! There was just dirt everywhere things that could've been so easily wiped away like literally all over the house. I text the owner, to let him know that it wasn't a very pleasant arrival and he was nothing but rude and ignorant, not even an apology! In fact he said "I Will make sure it's extra clean for the next guests". Also be prepared to spend 40 mins of your time boiling the kettle several times in order to have a hot bath! The water is constantly hot then cold hot then cold. Even the electrical shower?! When I informed the owner he just told me if I was unhappy I should just leave and he would refund me. The only reason I didn't leave is cause I had no where else to go/book on such short notice. Awful experience would not reccomened to anyone! The only pleasent thing about mermaid cottage is the location and view.

Mermaid cottage is a gem - perfect spot to relax.. Once parked we didn’t move the car all week. The bay window in the bedroom looking over towards the sea was gorgeous- cuppa tea in the morning watching the world and the sea - perfect. Everything you need . Not the smartest kitchen but very cosey. Huge bath . Garden worked for us with the dog. Fields 2 streets away to run the dog - but generally everywhere was dog friendly. Really gotpubs in Newlyn. Perfect for walks and a meal .

Location, location, location! ! Perfect for an easy relaxing holiday.. Walks and dog friendly from the door. Car parking no problem...We used the gallery at the arranged times and when we weren't out and about parked in the free car park by the boating pool about 400 m away. The house may be a little dated for some I enjoyed its quirkiness. All the facilities are provided and the kitchen was well equipped. The outside area was bigger than we thought too. A new area for us we would go again.

The absence of a satisfactory internet service is, in this day and age, lamentable.. Having to go across the lane to the Newlyn Art Gallery, introduce myself as the occupier of the holiday cottage was fine to obtain permission to use the parking concession but to then have to obtain THEIR password to log onto THEIR internet service was, I feel, very cheeky to say the least. The manager agreed but gave me the password anyway. Internet service, however, was very poor. Anyone relying on good internet service should avoid this accommodation. Otherwise we found it suited our needs extremely well. We shall miss gazing across the green at Mount’s Bay when having an evening glass of wine.

The cottage was not overly clean, and the kitchen and bathroom in particular need some updating.. The info re: car parking was very misleading. Accessing the parking was extremely difficult. The parking was only available between 6pm and 8am, therefore there is a need to get up early to move the car - you cannot park on the street as it is too narrow, therefore you have to park on a nearby car park if there is a space. This costs £5 per day. Otherwise you have to drive quite a way to find on street parking. This was in January, so I can imagine it would be much more difficult in the summer. None of these things would be problem if they had been accurately stated, but they were not. Wi-fi was supposed to be available using the password/number from the art gallery, and by standing in the window. The art gallery was closed all week so we couldn't do this - so don't expect Wi-Fi. On the plus side, the house was extremely warm and the heat is included in the price, making it good value for a winter holiday.

This accommodation is in an excellent location, with quick and easy access to local shops and eating places if wanted, as well as being a good centre for roads out in all directions..

This is the third year we have stayed at Mermaid Cottage, so obviously it suits us.. There is everything provided for our stay = particularly kitchen equipment, as we like to cook a simple evening meal each day. The bed is really comfortable and we love the huge bedroom with the great views of the sea. The cottage maybe different to what some people expect but we love its character, and it makes us feel we are really away on holiday.

Mermaid cottage is in a great location.. penzance is a few minutes walk away, there are free tennis courts within ten minutes and also three supermarkets the same distance away. it's fairly easy to find free parking on one of the sideroads nearby if the (seven) spaces in the car park by the fisherman's statue have all been taken. we found the cottage to be spotlessly clean and very comfortable. the mattress in the second bedroom is pretty firm however. the views from the main bedroom are wonderful and relaxing. there is a charm about the place, it's quirky in a good way and the variety of pictures and paintings add to the unique ambience of the place. many thanks too to the owner for being so kind in sending on a jacket which i'd inadvertently left behind!
