Holiday home
Situated at the edge of the pretty village of Penruddock, this pretty terrace cottage is just four miles from the town of Ullswater and provides warm and welcoming accommodation. Boasting a spacious sitting room, a dining area with cosy wood-burning stove and two bedrooms - each with magnificent views of the Northern Fells - the property is well equipped. Area
Set in a secluded position in the northern Lake District, the charming village of Penruddock is located between Keswick and Penrith, and is just four miles from Ullswater. This little town is spread across rolling countryside and is composed of many old farmsteads, traditional workmen's cottages and two churches. Penruddock can trace its history back to Celtic times, the name being derived from 'Pen', a Celtic word for 'hill' and 'rhuddawc' meaning red in Welsh and referring to the reddish brown colour of the soil found in the area. The popular town of Keswick is close by, boasting numerous shops and restaurants, as well as offering miniature golf, some good parks, the Century Theatre, a cinema and a beautiful lake. Penruddock itself offers easy access to the surrounding Cumbrian countryside and the southern Lakes, Solway Coast and Hadrian's Wall are all within easy driving distance.

Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

Amenities
Woodburning stove in sitting room fuelling radiators with electric panel heaters and additional hot water from immersion heater if required. Wasn't mentioned about the garden being shared, difficult with us having a dog!

December 2019
Unfortunately we didnt stay the full time we booked as My wife was taken unwell after a couple of days.. We did let the owner know. We appreciated the complimentary logs to get the fire going on the first day but we bought some logs which must have been wet and the fire wouldn't light. As a result with no fire the cottage was not warm at all. Would be lovely to stay in the summer though.

It would have been even better if there had been somewhere to hang wet coats and muddy boots in the entrance lobby.. The second bedroom was ‘tight’ but ok as we were only three adults. Everything else was lovely. We had a lovely time. The cottage location is idyllic.

Lovely cottage with a good accurate description.. It was ideally situated for the Lakes and for Penrith. Great position just off the road to Keswick and a lovely quiet location with wonderful views.

This cottage is well positioned and clean.. However we found that the rug in the lounge smelt very heavily of dog and was really overpowering - we decided to roll it up and store it in a cupboard! Carpets upstairs also smelt. TV was a real problem - the remote control does not work. I changed the batteries at my own expense - still no joy. Both of these problems were reported by previous visitors and have still not been resolved - so this was disappointing. Please note - I understand the property takes dogs and we are not overly fussy when it comes to things like that but that rug needs binning or thoroughly cleaning - I would recommend replacing it as when i rolled it up the label stated it was not suitable for placing in front of an open fire. We really enjoyed our holiday and apart from those problems the cottage is well positioned & reasonably good value.

June 2019
Lovely cottage, well equipped and a real home from home.. However rear garden whilst enclosed is a shared garden with the adjoining property, this should be stated in description, as whilst not a problem for us some may prefer to know this in advance especially as property is advertised ‘ dog friendly’ .

The batteries in the TV remote were running low but that is just so you are aware.. The cottage was lovely, clean, cosy and well equipped. The views over the fells, even in bad weather, were spectacular and the location was perfect for everywhere we wanted to go. Peaceful and comfortable, all we needed.

March 2019
The cottage was lovely and cosy and spotless - the cleaner does a fab job! We really enjoyed the log burner and location was fab too. The cottage could do with a slight update - there was damp in the main double room, which you could see, the bathroom was ok, but could do with updating and it is downstairs beside the kitchen - which is not ideal when you are heavily pregnant and needing the bathroom in the night - if we had have known that beforehand we might not have booked this accommodation (might be helpful to add this into the description). There was a constant smell in the living room also, which we think was the mat in the middle of the room - could maybe do with cleaning to get rid of the smell. But apart from that, the place is lovely, we did enjoy our stay and the only main thing missing is a washing machine (we stayed for 2 weeks, so would have been handy!) and wifi is not great, so if you have kids or want to watch Netflix etc, it def will not work! But its a good time to enjoy the outdoors and switch off from WIFI!

Fantastic cosy cottage in a great location with stunning views and easy access to the Northern Lakes. We had a very comfortable stay for 10 nights. The cottage was clean and well equipped, even though the weather was cold and frosty most of our stay the multi fuel fire kept the whole cottage really warm 24/7 with either the supplied logs or coal. There were many walks directly from the door which pleased our dog and the dog friendly pub The Herdwick is only a short walk away with good food and a fine selection of ales. Will be back.

The car park space to the front of the cottage you have to drive down a very narrow track to get to it, if we had a sports car we would not have been able to get to the cottage, this should be pointed out to people before they book..

I have tried to raise my concerns with Skyes cottges, but they have not responded, and I am unable to attach any photos to their email forms, so will do this here. This was a lovely cottage with great vies but spoiled by the mould on all the ceilings, signs of water damage on walls, and paper peeling off the walls from the damp. We were their in August and the only way to dry towels was to turn on the radiators and use these. My Younger son had a cold all week, not sure the damp helped with this, and those with babies or health problems may not do as well.

Had a lovely stay in the cottage, it is hidden down a lane, we got lost trying to find it. Once there had no complaints, the view is fantastic, has everything you need in there. Board games and dvds for when the weather isnt great. Was close enough to activities locations if you drive. A pub just around the corner is fab, lovely food and very friendly. Farm shop/cafe is 3 miles away, take a walk down the lane to get there and you'll also come across another great place to eat and drink. We had a lot of rain whilst we were there so would recommend wellies if you are walking to the pub as the puddles can get very big.

The location was good to access the mountains in the North West of the Lake District. We climbed Helvelyn, Skidoor, Blan Cathra and Ullswater. We accessed a good outdoor activity centre within 4 miles offering horse riding, shooting, quad biking etc. Fairly easy access to villages and towns around Ullswater in particular. Good access to M6 so we could access Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall. Regarding the cottage - lovely selection of books and games to read and play with. Logs supplied for fire along with milk and a good selection of things eg tea/coffee/sugar etc which really was appreciated when we arrived. Being in the North East of the Lake District is an advantage if you don't like crowds of people. Apparently it's much less busy than the more southerly areas such as Kendal etc.

The cottage is located in a quiet secluded part of the village. Cooage was clean and homely. Kitchen was well equiped and I was able to cook without any hassle. We ate at the local Inns and I enjoyed The Sportsman's food and Jennings ale. We enjoyed the seclusion and quiet as we were ready for a rest, but amenities were close enough for nice days out exploring. The only thing I was disappointed with was the bathroom. It is in need of refurbishing. The log burner was a novelty, and we soon had the cottage snug and warm.

Well appointed and comfortable cottage which was very well equipped (only grumble was a lack of good sharp knives) and well furnished. The weather during our stay was wild, cold and wet but we were toasty inside with a combination of electric heating, topped up by a solid fuel stove in the living room. We have rented many cottages over the years and reckon this was the best for location, views, comfort and warmth!

December 2009
The cottage is in a wonderfully peaceful spot, with lovely views across fields to Mell Fell. A nearby footpath crosses a couple of fields to the pub and bus stop in the centre of the village. Penruddock is about 4 miles from the southern end of Ullswater, but more driving is involved to reach the heart of the Lake District and the high fells. However, the lanes around Penruddock are quiet and peaceful, away from the crowds, and it is well located for less frequented walks. We made good use of the excellent bus service to Penrith and to Keswick and beyond, (free for us now we have reached 60!) The cottage is well equipped and furnished, with a new kitchen, including dishwasher, and large fridge-freezer. TV reception is limited, due to the location. Bedrooms smallish, but very comfortable, with great views. The bathroom is downstairs, through the kitchen. We were there for a fortnight, and would have appreciated a washing machine (there is one, not yet plumbed in). However overall we loved the cottage, felt very at home, thought it was good value, and would like to return.
