Area
Hinderwell is a small, lively village close to the fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay. Hinderwell was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hildrewell, a derivation of Hilda's Well, named for the Abbess of Whitby who was travelling through the parish in a drought and was asked to intercede. Her prayers were answered when a spring appeared near the sight of the present Parish Church, and this spring has continued to flow from the hillside to this day. The village is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful countryside, and walks, cycle ways, gliding, horse riding and fishing are all well catered for in the area. Whitby is seven miles away and the town has a rich and varied heritage waiting to be discovered. This is a fabulous holiday base.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Stayed May 2021. A beautiful location. The neighbours (Edward, Steve and Richard in particular) made us so very welcome and Edward very kindly shared his knowledge of the local area. The cottage has stunning views to the rear and a lovely little suntrap of a front garden too. The facilities were very good and the cottage was warm and cosy. Everything you could need for a self catering holiday was supplied. The furniture was of good quality, as were the bedding and towels. Very clean. I am reliably informed that the cottage (one of four) is in fact a converted Manor House and has a lot of history. Hinderwell is a fabulous location...the villagers were welcoming, friendly and incredibly helpful. The village boasts two pubs, a butchers/grocers, a mobile post office, a tea room / gift shop and is the base for numerous local walks and places of interest. The cottage and the area are only for the completely mobile...steep stairs in the cottage and even steeper hills all around! A must do is the local graveyard...separated into two - St Hilda's Well is next to the church, but climb up to the top of the graveyard across the way and you will be rewarded with views for miles over the coast and rolling hills. Thanks Edward! Highly recommended.

Lovely cottage in a great location.. Think it could do would some modernising such as WiFi and somewhere to dry wet towels for instance. Would stay again.

A lovely cozy cottage in a perfect location to explore the North Yorkshire coast.. The cottage was very clean and well equipped with everything needed for a self catering break. The bedrooms are very spacious with a fantastic view from the top floor. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be looking to book again.

Overall the cottage was what we expected for the money.. It was clean, the owners were helpful and Hinderwell is a nice village with a twenty minute walk to the beach at Runswick Bay. Lion cottage is quite small and dark inside but it had everything you needed for a week’s stay. It was value for money considering we were there at the peak of the summer in August. The biggest negative is the parking on the busy main road.

I was surprised that the details on your site gave the impression that the field of camping and beautiful view [picture was at the end of the garden which it was not.. We could only see this view standing on tiptoe or on the bed in the 2nd floor bedroom and craning our necks to see out of the tiny high window. I think this picture should be removed as it is misleading. All else was good except the noise of the busy road at the end of our garden. We had to take pot luck parking on this road as there was no other available parking.

Lovely comfortable and clean cottage in perfect setting.. Convenient for pubs, walks, moors and coast. Very friendly owner. Quiet area with friendly neighbours. On road parking was never a problem as plenty of spaces. One of our best holidays!

A minor point to make is it would be ideal if there was a washing machine available.. Everything else was fantastic.

The cottage was welcoming and comfy.. It’s an excellent base to explore the surrounding countryside and coastal areas. The proximity of the cafe, shop and pubs meant everything you needed was close to hand. We found the lack of WiFi a benefit as it gave us valuable family time. Would recommend to small families and couples. We all had a great time. Thanks

We enjoyed our short break in Hinderwell.. One big advantage of the cottage is that because it is set back from the High Road, it is very peaceful and there's no traffic noise. The Runcible Spoon cafe a few doors down the High St is a great place for a coffee, lunch or an evening meal. The butcher's also has basics like milk, cheese, pasta etc - everything you need for a meal

We had a lovely stay in Lion Cottage, Hinderwell.. The cottage was very comfortable for the 2 of us (might have been a bit cramped for 4) cosy to come back to after a day out and very well equipped. I think it was very good value for money. The cottage does not have WiFi, and we frequently had no phone signal because of the thick walls of the cottage. This was not a problem for us - until we needed to contact the 111service for some advice in the middle of the night. I couldn't use the on-line service and when I phoned the phone kept cutting out. It was just unlucky that I was unwell while we were there (fortunately nothing serious that was sorted with antibiotics) but when we are more and more reliant on online services these days I feel WiFi would be an added benefit to the cottage. Other than that we had a lovely stay and would recommend the cottage.

The cottage was damp, felt this in bedsheets and damp smell in cottage.. Other than this, with a little heat from the fire the place was comfortable and we'll equipped. Nicely situated and quiet area with good local amenities.

Great holiday.. Lion Cottage was delightful. Ample room for 2. Everything you could want in the cottage. Hinderwell is quiet but there's plenty of places to walk to from the cottage. Lots of walking and things to see in the surrounding area.

We enjoyed our week in Lion Cottage, it is well equipped and comfortable.. Hinderwell is very well positioned for walks both coastal and inland routes. Although Wi-fi is not available in the cottage we did manage to log on in the local pub called the Brown Cow which did good meals at very reasonable prices too.

Wonderful cottage, wifi would be a bonus, but otherwise great.. Perfect for a young family or a couple looking for something nice. Staithes is an easy walk, everywhere else is a short drive. Nicely furnished and equipped.

The cottage architecturally is old quaint and cute. The bed was comfortable, however a new replaced duvet and not one that had laundered resulting in it feeling heavy would have been appreciated. The two sofas are very cheap and uncomfortable, very low backed with fixed 'collapsed in the middle' foam seat cushions. As the cushions were integral with the sofa it was not possible to support the cushions with a blanket or magazines etc to stop sinking into the middle of the sofa when seated. The photo of the outside seating area gives the impression that it is seclude and an excellent area to eat and entertain in. It is not. The cottage is in a quadrangle the garden is open and overlooked on three sides by rows of cottages, it felt like eating center stage! Slabs, trellis and imaginative planting of quick climbers to go thru the trellis would be wonderful and make a nice outdoor area. The owners are missing a trick, the cottage is old and quaint but as it does not have stunning or interesting views, is not in a village of outstanding beauty, internally it should be comfortable and stunning. The bottle of wine is a nice touch, but I would prefer a fluffy quilt, somewhere nice to sit outdoors and comfortable seating indoors. I actually left a day early as I developed something I have never had before...back ache from sitting on the sofa.

Lovely cottage in good location for visiting places such as Whitby, Scarborough etc but especially good for walking parts of the Cleveland Way.. The lack of signal for our phones and no WIFI a bit of a pain as we took hikes and struggled to download any cycle roots. Also, there was nowhere to store our bikes. If we had known this we would have left the bikes at home. A few visits to Dotties Tea Room in Staithes was our WIFI saviour. The cottage was warm, cozy and comfortable for the two of us. The dim lighting in the kitchen made cooking a bit more difficult but it didn't stop us. I would definitely stay in this cottage again as the coastal views and walks from Runswick Bay were just down the road and highly recommended.

Booked for a week but left a day early. The cottage was small which was fine for just the two of us. Just inside the back door was an empty space ideal for walking shoes etc but not a coat hook in sight to hang wet coats. The decor was not very well thought through as all the pictures were different colours and the bedding was mismatched with brown and turquoise sheets! On the plus side the village pub across the road was excellent as was the location of the cottage the garden was a pleasure to sit in too. Needs a more homely touch.
