An abundance of flora and fauna make the island a haven for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and those interested in water sports. The east of the island features pristine, remote areas rich in wildlife and beautiful beaches, while the west is more developed and offers more options for shopping, dining, and water sports. Colchester, a lovely town with a castle, museums, a zoo, excellent sports and leisure facilities, a cinema, great shopping, and good restaurants, is only nine miles away from the island.  Ipswich, located a short drive away, is home to a fantastic shopping centre as well as many historical and cultural attractions like Christchurch Mansion and the trendy Waterfront marina, where you can enjoy wine at one of the many restaurants or take a cruise down the river.
