Situated in its own grounds in the peaceful and tranquil hamlet of Hury, this property is a charming stone-built semi-detached cottage just 10 miles from Barnard Castle. Situated in the midst of beautiful surroundings, the property provides first class accommodation with a high-quality fitted kitchen and dining area, as well as a lounge with electric wood-burning-stove effect fire. Outside is a good sized garden and eating area, perfect for the long summer evenings.

Accomodation Details
All ground floor. Two bedrooms: 1 x double, 1 x twin. Bathroom with bath, shower over, basin and WC. Kitchen with dining area. Sitting room with electric woodburner-effect fire.

Area
Made up of a small cluster of hamlets and farm dwellings overlooking the reservoirs of Hury, Blackton and Balderhead, Baldersdale branches off Teesdale. Home to Hannah Hauxwell, this lovely settlement rose to fame in the 1970s when Hauxwell was featured on television for single-handedly running her farm from her home which had no running water. Now managed by Durham Wildlife Trust, 'Hannah's Meadow' is an attractive nature reserve. One of the most unspoilt villages in Teesdale – Romaldkirk – is close by and consists of pretty greens, old stone cottages, a beautiful old church and two pubs - one of which won the AA Pub of the Year award for England in 2003. The breathtaking Dales countryside provides some excellent walking and cycling routes whilst the cities of Durham and Newcastle are all within easy driving distance for more cosmopolitan activities.

August 2020
Hury Lodge is cosy with wonderful views over the reservoir.. Communication with the owner was excellent and we had a safe, contactless entry & departure. Everything was very clean and comfortable. It was great having the enclosed garden for our 2 dogs, sadly not the weather for a BBQ, although one is provided. A very enjoyable stay overall!

December 2019
The cottage is compact, well heated with a fantastic view of the reservoir.. A broad selection of utensils were available but missing a basic few. It was disappointing to find the TV was not working, something that should have been identified and rectified before we arrived. We found our phones were not getting good reception, so, after a texted conversation relating to the internet access and code given for access not working and requests for assistance with the TV, both were resolved by the owners when they returned. Simple things like a tea strainer or cafetiere would have been helpful as making fresh coffee was a bit of a challenge with nothing to stop the coffee ground when pouring.

When you go away in November your not expecting fantastic weather, so staying at Hury lodge was an absolute delight for those rainy days where you could cosy up with a good book and look out the window to the wonderful view of the reservoir.. Also makes for a good walk, though a bit muddy with all the rain over the last week. This is very well equipped cottage with a good range of kitchen utensils, books etc. Nice touch having milk and cake there on arrival, thank you. I have a Jack Russell terrier which I felt was saver keeping on a lead when ever we were outside as there are sheep in the fields around the cottage. Beautiful countryside with lots to explore, would highly recommend for a peaceful getaway.

We spent an idyllic week at Hury Lodge. What a lovely location and beautiful setting. The cottage was lovely and very spacious - we were a party of four adults and 1 dog. The views were stunning and our dog was fascinated by the sheep at the end of the garden. When we arrived it was lovely to be able to make tea & coffee which was provided and lovely homemade chocolate cake. There was everything we needed to make our stay exceptional. Hope to visit again.

This was I think our fourth visit to Hury, hence my expectations are met rather than exceeded! It is a lovely place where we are guaranteed a peaceful stay. It's very good for my elderly father - we love the view across the reservoir with ever-changing clouds and light, and easy short walks from the house.

Great location for relaxing. The cottage has got everything you need to make your stay more enjoyable. Ali and Chris are very pleasant and polite host's and told us that if there was anything we needed just to contact them. We was so relaxed and taken in by the gorgeous views in actual fact we didn't need to bother them. Comunication was good right from the start and Ali gave us some hints and tips of where to go for nice long walks in and around the area. Unfortunately lisa is disabled due to strokes so we took the car most places due to Lisa not being able to walk too long of a distance. The upkeep of the cottage and garden is to a very high standard and we loved every minute of our stay. On arrival into the cottage the Host's had left us a nice bottle of cava and a chocolate fudge cake of which we very kindly demolished. This is a dog friendly cottage and both our dogs loved every minute of their stay too and was both very sad to leave. The cottage and area is so peaceful and tranquil you kind of forget about all the worries of daily troubles back home. Great place and hope to return very soon

Our second visit.. . Cottage is very warm and cosy with all facilities provided. Small garden, ideal for small children and dogs. Views are spectacular and as based in Durham Dales but close to Cumbria and Yorkshire Dales the cottage is surrounded by stunning scenery. Owners very friendly and welcoming. We don't often go to same cottage twice as there are so many to choose from but in this case we will definitely be planning a third visit! Highly recommend.

A fantastic cottage on the banks of the Hury reservoir. The cottage is lovely, clean and warm, very comfortable and equipped to a high standard with everything you could possibly want. They have tea bags and coffee with fresh milk in the fridge and a packet of shortbread caramel biscuits for us and doggy treats for the dog. There was tin foil, cling film, washing up liquid, dishwashing tabs, doggy bags, even a towel for the dog, everything you'll need! The cottage is remote situated 3 miles over the Moors, but has good roads to reach it if you follow the directions given by the owners. The nearest shop is 4 miles away which is a post office, so only open throughout the day and the nearest town Barnard Castle which is 10 miles away, so make sure you take the food you need for the first days. The scenery is stunning with far reaching views across the reservoir and surrounding Pennines. The garden is fully enclosed for dogs with a wire fence and chicken wire around the bottom, but if you have small dogs they maybe able to get through a small area of fencing that didn't have chicken wire on at the side of the cottage. You can walk around the reservoir 3.5 miles, but there isn't a proper path way to get to it, so not good for less able visitors and I found that there isn't anywhere you can walk the dogs for a short toilet break as the cottage is down a short lane and then your onto the road and sheep in the field outside the cottage. The owners were lovely and nothing would be too much trouble. I would definitely recommend and will look forward to a return visit.

This is the second time we have stayed at Hury Lodge, we enjoyed our week there last year so much that we returned for two weeks. The cottage is adjacent to the owner's house, but we only saw them a couple of times during our stay. The cottage feels away from it all, surrounded by fields and sheep. There are also gorgeous views from the kitchen and conservatory of the reservoir. The cottage is spacious and very well equipped. The wifi isn't great, but other than checking opening times etc. you won't need it as there's plenty of things to keep you busy in the area! The house is very peaceful, I would definitely recommend. We will definitely be back at some point.

Our second visit and it was just as we had remembered it. The owners were very friendly and always happy to chat. Had stunning views which the cottage makes the best of with the big picture window in the kitchen and the little porch/sun lounge. Care had also been taken with the garden. We hope to visit again. We all, including the dog, enjoyed it.

This is a lovely cosy cottage adjoined to the owners house with it's own garden and stunning views over Hury reservoir and the dales beyond. If you are looking for peace and quiet and somewhere away from it all, then this is the place to be. The cottage is well maintained and equipped and each room feels very comfortable. My favourite was the kitchen with the lovely featured arch window overlooking Hury reservoir. The cottage is warm and homely with freshly laundered, ample supply of towels and comfy beds. One bedroom is located off the kitchen, and the other off the sitting room. Even during a very stormy 36 hours, we felt cosy and warm in the cottage. There are some walks round the reservoir or along the lanes in the immediate location and is probably even more lovely during the summer months. The nearest place, we found, to shop was Barnard Castle, so go with some provisions. Barnard Castle is a lovely market town and nice to wander around as it has some lovely shops and of course the castle. There is no internet at the cottage, which is sometimes a good thing, but also extremely scarce mobile phone network coverage, so be prepared to be cut off from the outside world for a while. This is a dog friendly cottage and the main reason I chose to stay here, especially with the enclosed garden. The sun room entrance porch is great for taking off muddy wellies and for drying off muddy paws before going inside the cottage. However, for two small Cockapoo's the garden was not secure enough as they could fit through the bars on the gate and the wire fencing also has gaps big enough for them to get through, so for us, it was supervised on the lead in the garden. Immediately across from the wire fence is a field of sheep, so something to be mindful of too. I would definitely recommend this cottage. Certainly a great place to unwind.

The property provided comfort and seclusion even though a thriving market town was only a short drive away.

Wonderful - well appointed cottage conversion in what has rightly been described as one of the UK's hidden gems, the Durham Dales. a short drive from the thriving market town of Barnard Castle with award winning restaurants, yet secluded and with outstanding views. Cosy bedrooms, comfortable sitting room, well appointed kitchen (the rolling pin and mixing bowl saw some action this week).

August 2013
The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. We moved the dining table in the kitchen to take better advantage of the views over the reservoir and hillside. The lounge was comfortable and the bedroom was fine, except for the small doorway which is fine if you are under 5 feet tall.

A wonderful break away. Beautiful location, roomy, well equipped cottage. Helpful friendly owners who pulled our car out of a snow drift even! Barnard Castle a 20 mns drive away. Great location for walkers and for driving to explore the area, both north and south. Only negative was no internet acccess, but that was a minor gripe. We were there in winter. Would also be wonderful in the Summer. Highly recommended.

This is a cosy, well-appointed, cottage with SUPERB views of the surrounding countryside. The owner was friendly and helpful, and had gone to great pains to provide useful information about both the house facilities and local attractions, and local maps. The standard of furnishing was very good for a 'Pet-friendly' cottage. The decor was particularly pleasing. We would really struggle to find fault with this cottage. It was a luxury to have a dishwasher, but I might have preferred a washing machine if we had been staying longer. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hury Lodge to others. Even my cats didn't want to leave!
