Cockermouth, a sleepy country market town in the Lake District's peaceful north-west corner, is only 13 miles from Keswick while being in a relatively unknown and unspoiled location. Among the town's most famous residents are William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame), who both were born here, and the National Trust has turned the Georgian family home where Wordsworth was born into a renowned tourist destination for visitors.
