Self-Catering Reviews

Although the place and scenery was great and lovely and quiet, the only complaint we have is it didn't meet up to our expectations by being dog friendly.. We have a puppy who is very friendly and likes to explore (alot) and is easily distracted. When sat out in the garden area or taking him outside for him to relieve himself (in the end) we had to tie him up or put him on a lead as the garden was not secure. There is a hole in the fence (which he ran through twice) and no gate on the entrance to the garden. There are also wild mushrooms growing in the garden which he tried to eat a few times. Apart from that the place was lovely and comfortable and had everything we needed.

A peaceful and tranquil holiday,it had everything you need, lovely views of open countryside a great place to unwind and chill.. Sainsbury's and Aldi 5mins away in Pocklington for all your grocery needs. Quite central with York only 15 miles away and around an hours drive for the east coast ie. Bridlington etc. Would recommend to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday with plenty of walks for our furry friends, would give it a 5 star rating.

The cottage was very comfortable and larger than I expected.. The garden is large but not secure, no gate at far end and archway in wall through to field. The gate to separate cottage next door had 2 slats missing so our dog kept visiting neighbours to play with children, fortunately they didn't mind. The WiFi was fine we were able to watch Netflix.

Well, almost met our expectations.. The place was spotless, spacious, and very well equipped. However, there were a couple of maintenance issues that need sorting. The front (and only) door sticks, and at times we had real problems getting in and out! Also, the shower would not always fire up first go, and you had to fiddle with the main on/off switch in the loo a few times to get a result. The big problem was the Wifi. This is essential to us as we have a close relative who is housebound and not very well at all, and this is the way we keep on touch with her. The problem was that we could connect, but after a few seconds it would all drop out, and you had to start all over again. The longest I managed to keep it going at any time was about two minutes, and when it did connect, it was d-e-s-p-e-r-a-t-e-l-y s- -l- -o- -w! I also experienced messages on my computer stating that 'another computer on the network was using my IP address' and 'the name of my computer was already being used on the network' - why was I on anyone's network at all? I have mentioned this to friend of mine who hosts internet sites, and is a bit of a whizz with this sort of thing, and he states that this is not right at all! My partner's iPad running the latest OS could not get any sort of connection at all. Ther 'manual' for the cottage said we could contact the owner if there were any queries. I texted him one evening around 6pm - thought that was better than possibly interrupting a meal, but got no reply. I 'phoned the next morning, spoke to his daughter who said he was out, but she took my number, and said either he or someone else would get back to me .... and guess what, nobody did. I 'phoned again later the same day, and got hold of the owner, who told me that BT were having problems - but while walking the dog locally, I spoke to several residents, and they were having no problems at all, although the speed was not wonderful, but fast enough to watch catchup TV etc, so not bad. Mr. Woodliffe said he might be able to get out that evening if he could to see what he could do, so we stayed in, and guess what ........ no show. So, overall, the place was good on the whole, but the 'back-up' was very poor. Had this been sorted, or at least attended to as far as could be, we would have given it a glowing review, but under the circumstances, this side of things was disappointing. I don't wan't you to publish my feedback, but I would like it if Mr. Woodliffe was more co-operative with his guests in future. Mick Leary and Carol Parsons.

Had a wonderful break here.. Absolutely spotless and very comfortable. Everything was provided down to a rolling pin. Only fault was the WiFi, the connection dropped or it was so slow I gave up whenever I tried to use it. Didn’t spoil our break though. Loved this break.

Only one point and that was there was a strong dog odour in the lounge which we were unable to get rid of even after spraying with air freshener.. Also it would have been most useful to have a hair dryer for the use by all.

We only encountered one problem during our holiday.. My partner is wheelchair bound and accessing the cottage is very difficult due to the width of the doorstep and the height from step to door frame. Unfortunately the picture on your website does not show that side of the house. Otherwise everything was fine in a beautiful part of the country

No coat hangers in wardrobe, toilet too low and no blind on window.. Outside light not working and smell of damp in kitchen cupboards. Loo roll holder broken and no milk satchets for tea facilities. No cold water from bath tap and Wi-Fi virtual none exsistant. On the plus side, it was warm and cosy with lovely views, plenty of parking and quiet.

Advertised as being able to walk from the door into the countryside.. Walks only accessible after walking on narrow country lanes and many of the public pathways were across farmers fields which were not obvious as they had been ploughed and crops were planted. However, travelling a few miles by car led to walks in woods open to the public and the Yorkshire Wolds.

The cottage was in a nice quiet location with beautiful views. There was ample parking and only a short drive from York. The accommodation was warm, cosy and light with homely furnishings and the kitchen was well fitted with everything we needed. It had a really nice feel and would definitely book to stay here again. Thanks West End for an enjoyable holiday.
