Area
Winding leafy lanes, honeysuckle and wild roses in season, hilly areas and incredible views characterise the rural village of Drummin 10 miles south of Westport in County Mayo. There are many fascinating and beautiful places to visit in this part of Ireland. Go fishing in the rivers such as the Erriff River around eight miles away, and the Delphi River in the Doolough Valley, about six miles away. The lively town of Westport nearby is proud of its rich Irish heritage and offers an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and traditional music. County Galway is just over 30 minute's drive away to the south, and offers a wonderful day out, with glorious coastal scenery and the world-famous Connemara National Park.

The West of Ireland conjures up many images; thatched, whitewashed cottages, a flock of sheep on a narrow road, an emerald green field with a stone wall, or the Atlantic waves crashing into towering cliffs and rocky shores.

Quiet location and a good base to explore the west coast of Ireland.. Hosts provided plenty of turf to keep the open fire going. A really good holiday.

We really enjoyed our weekend at the Thatched Cottage.. The scones on arrival were delicious and much appreciated. The cottage is comfortable and cosy, with a homely atmosphere and the setting is stunning, which we loved. If you are looking for luxury, then this may not be for you but we would be very happy to return for another visit.

Host was lovely.. She made us scones on arrival and was very helpful. Very quaint little cottage with a lot of character. Very quiet, comfy beds, good facilities, stunning views. Very small - would be fine for a couple or family of 3 but we were a family of 5 and it felt quite cramped. Second bedroom was tiny but master bedroom was massive. We stayed there for 3 nights, and whilst we did like it, that was enough for us as we had seen everything there was to see in the local area. Location was good for exploring the local area.

A trip back down memory lane how life used to be in Ireland, Thick stone whitewashed walls, quirky uneven floors cosy living dining room with all you need on a holiday which you are out and about during the day, Bedrooms are comfortable, second one very small so but bed comfortable.. The storage heaters keep it warm and there is no smell of damp as some of these cottages have. The surrounding countryside is wonderful great views of the mountains and some really crazy roads. Hikers and walkers would love this place as a base. We had a brilliant time and a very friendly welcome. Thank you. I would definitely be happy to go back there

Externally the cottage is picture perfect, with a lovely new thatch.. The setting and views across the valley are amazing. The cottage was well situated for us to enjoy cycling the Greenway from Newport to Achill, and by contrast enjoy a ferry trip to Inishmore and Inishbofin in the opposite direction. Near to Connemara and Nephin Beg. Just 45 minutes drive from Knock Airport. The cottage is in need of some update internally, however the owner did give us a very warm welcome, with home made scones, and a peat fire lit in the log/peat burner. We had a very enjoyable holiday despite a fair bit of rain.

Great location, and with the extremely good weather life was outside most of the time..

Outside lovely as per webpic, though grass (freshly cut) rough, and garden bare of plants.. Master bedroom lilac and light and big, though second bed tucked in rather spoilt it for us (just a couple). Electric shower and immersion worked well and heater in cold bathroom appreciated. Cold building but peat fire excellent and supply of peat endless. TV and seating old and shabby (though clean), need replacing. Lovely dining table though covered in rough plastic. Table mats natural fibre would cure at once. Lighting in sitting room very gloomy, side lights would cure. Lovely scones on arrival. Would be lovely property if given a bit of attention.

The Ower was a nice chap, but the cottage was dirty.. Cobwebs in cubboads ,the toilets leaked, the furniture was done, the curtains done, the chairs at the table shaky, the wood burner door catch not working properly, the shower door fitted that it only opens one side and large people could not get a shower, a smell of damp in back bedroom . Tv is needing replaced , gaps under door that mice can came in, I used to use bothys for hill walking and this property would be in that category, we left two days early in our holiday and this was part of the reason , it was not worth the money we paid, Sorry but we are not difficult people rarely complain , hope this is helpful

This cottage is quirky, has uneven floors, a shower room which could not be described as spacious and is full of character. As other reviewers have said, it is basic but certainly has everything you would need for a week's stay. Unfortunately the owners were not on site to meet us on arrival as they were away, but we had no problem accessing the property. They met us the following day and were very friendly and helpful. The fire was great (the evenings were chilly) and it was a new experience to burn the peat provided as part of the rental. The cottage was certainly warm and cosy. It would be advisable to take food supplies with you as you arrive as there was nothing at all provided. Westport - the nearest town - has shops and supermarkets and the pubs and bars are great for traditional Irish music. The surrounding area has spectacular scenery with mountains and the coast quite close by - a car is essential. When we were there (June) the mosquitos were active, so take insect repellent!

The location is really rural and tranquil - a thatched cottage in a small, friendly farming community with great views and a nice bar just five minutes walk away. The cottage is not luxurious but comfortable enough (and authentic) and the owners were very helpful. There was plenty of turf and wood for the stove and we just loved the scent of peat in the air. The area around is full of interest and spectacular views. Westport is an elegant and fascinating town with really good food (we had a superb meal at the Sage restaurant) and much to see including Westport House. We found the Thatched Cottage was the perfect base for day trips to places like Clare Island, Croag Patrick and the astonishingly beautiful Connemara Mountains. Strongly recommended!

The cottage was very traditional and homely. The location was lovely, rural but within easy reach of Westport. The owner had a drawer full of leaflets on local attractions which was very thoughtful.

We loved the wood burning stove and the quirkiness of the property. The owners were very helpful indeed. The situation was perfect for exploring both Mayo and Galway. The views from the cottage lovely - surrounded by hills. The nearest town, Westport, was about twenty minutes away, and was lovely also, the shops great. We enjoyed the peace and tranquility!

We loved the cottage and the old feel of the place. Fantastic scenic area and the locals were really friendly. We received a great welcome from the owner with fresh scones and a lovely warm fire. We would certainly return, and love the idea of coming again in the summer.

We loved our stay in the Thatched cottage- it is not luxurious, but we were not looking for luxury. We enjoy walking and the views were spectacular. The Thatched Cottage was the perfect base for our holiday. We could dry out our socks in front of the peat fire when it rained (which it did quite a lot) and it was quite a short drive into Westport where we enjoyed a drop of the black stuff and some fantastic music of an evening. Our hosts could not have been more friendly and accommodating. I would heartily recommend the Thatched Cottage to anyone who is after an authentic experience and who doesn't mind uneven floors!

A traditional cottage with a wood burner, peace and quiet. Irish music and a drop of the black stuff in Westport. Scenery that made your heart sing and truly lovely people!

The cottage was, as indicated in the description, quirky, sloping floors and bijou. It was very comfortable, very well equipped for self-catering, and very well placed to explore both Mayo and beautiful Galway and Connemara, with its mountains and lovely coastline. We are going back for two weeks next year, we enjoyed it so much! Its proximity to the pretty town of Westport made it great for shopping for food and local sights. The cottage is situated in a very pretty location, surrounded by farmland and view of mountains. Great!
