The Stables Self-Catering
Holiday home As its name suggests, The Stables was originally used to house horses, but has been tastefully converted to provide an idyllic retreat for a large family or group of friends. The property has its own wood-burning stove, so you can make the most of what the region has to offer, even in the colder months. For the summer, visitors can use the owner's tennis court or indulge in a spot of alfresco dining in the private patio area at the rear of the property.

Area Bellingham is surrounded by the Northumberland National Park, is part of the Pennine Way and is near to Kielder Water, all of which makes it a walkers' paradise and a well-located base from which to see the rest of the region. It is extremely picturesque, comprising of a number of natural stone houses and there is much to see in the village itself, such as its 12th century church, the Heritage Centre and a cascading waterfall, which is just a short walk away. Nearby, other attractions include the Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall and Kielder Forest and Water. There are plenty of walks to be had in the region, as well as a host of outdoor activities, such as horse-riding, fishing and canoeing.
Region Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

Our host told us about Bellingham and I think other guests would appreciate knowing in advance that you can get just about everything you need there, including a nice riverside walk.. Also, closeness to Kielder Water is a great asset. The drive to Rothbury via Otterburn is stunning. We really enjoyed watching the beautiful horses and chickens. The roosters did not wake us up even though it was daylight by 3.30 am when we stayed in June. The internet connection was very good. We enjoyed our stay and the log burner was particular welcome on cool, wet days.

We had an amazing holiday.. Julian was very welcoming bringing fresh eggs when we arrived and gave tips on places to visit. We've been coming to Northumberland for the last 15 years but normally stay in a cottage in Amble on the coast but decided it was time for a change and we're very happy we made that change. We can't wait to visit again.

Very nice accommodation, with all the facilities.. Clean and well-equipped kitchen. As much wood as required to use in the log burner. Did spend about 15 min working out how to remove the back-up battery from a fire alarm that was beeping. Would suggest larger duvets, which hardly covered the single beds.

I booked this holiday in the hopes of enjoying a tranquil week recharging my very rundown energy level.. I was met on arrival by the owner who made me and my greyhound feel very welcome. The accommodation was beyond my expectations, being very spacious, incredibly well equipped, comfortable both upstairs and downstairs. The heating was perfect for the cool mornings and evenings, and could be boosted by using the log burner, for which there was a constant supply of logs. Being able to roam round the fields and along the river meant that I didn’t have to leave the estate for fantastic walking and countryside views, although I did venture out to Hexham, Kielder Water and Lindisfarne. The owners were on hand should I have needed any help, which was a comfort to know since I had travelled alone. The skies at night were absolutely amazing as there was no light pollution. The dark skies observatory is only a few miles away for obvious reasons (but would need prebooking as they are very busy)
In short I can thoroughly recommend this venue if you want to relax, unwind and re-energise

The pictures of the property are out of date and the accommodation is somewhat tired.. I presume the pictures relate to when it was first listed by Sykes. Having spoken to the lady who cleans the property ,as we were leaving ,it seems the control knob on the one shower has been falling off regularly for sometime, also the light bulbs in the main light over the dinning table keep failing and the main door lock needs attention as itis very hard to opperate causing constant annoyance.

Northumberland was beautiful and The Stables was perfect for our party. It was very rural, warm and comfortable. There was a washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, freezer and a well equipped kitchen, as well as a large dining table so we could all eat together. The landscape was great and the river was close by. Would thoroughly recommend The Stables and the county for a holiday.

October 2011
As part of a group of 4 blokes on a mountain biking holiday to Kielder we were extremely delighted with The Stables. Upon arrival we were given a very warm and friendly welcome from Julian and Karen. The Stables is very spacious, clean and comfortable, I especially loved the log stove fire (stacks of free logs available from the yardl!) as well as the powerful hot shower ( though on the last day the showers in all 3 ensuites were very weak). We have been to many different locations in the UK for mountain bike short breaks, but this cottage is the best yet. Nice secure storage for our bikes, and a hose pipe to wash them down too. The view from the cottage was so beautiful as were the sunsets. We had a slight struggle to find the place though as our satnav did not recognise the exact location, even a brief stop at the Boe Rigg cafe to ask for directions met with a lot of head scatching from a member of staff, even though the entrance to the private road leading to the Stables eventually turned out to be only 150 metres away! Nearby the Holly Bush Inn was great for food and Nells bitter. There's a good co op in nearby Bellingham for groceries and wines/beer. Mobile phone signal in the area is poor and non existant in the cottage. The only critiicism our group would make is the lack Wi Fi in the cottage, as this is so common everywhere today. Kielder is only a 20 min drive away from the Stables, so making it an excellent location if you going on mountain biking trip to the area. We would definately stay here again and we highly recommend it.
By the way this is also the first mountain bike holiday, where we came away with no mountain bike themed souvenirs, not one t shirt, socks, beenie or buff, come on Kielder Tourism you are missing out on some extra revenue! 10 out 10 for your trails though!

The location was incredibly peaceful.
The owner offered a warm and friendly greeting on arrival and then left us to get on with enjoying our holiday. Really impossible to think of a single criticism, not even a minor one. We desperately needed a relaxing break and this was perfect.
