The Shires Self-Catering

Holiday home
The Shires is a detached cottage with heaps of character, built with traditional stone in the heart of the stunning village of Alstonefield and can sleep six people. There is a king-size double bedroom, a twin bedroom, a single bed with an additional pull-out stacker bed, a bathroom, a ground floor basin and WC, a kitchen, a dining room and a sitting room. Outside there is off road parking for two cars and a lawned garden area with furniture. The Shires is a great base for your fun-filled holiday.

On the borders of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, between the valleys of the Dove and the Manifold Rivers, is the charming village of Alstonefield. With real charm and character, this wonderful little settlement has won the 'Best Kept Village Award' ten times - most recently in 2005 - and was also in the final of the 'National Village of the Year' award in 1998. With a traditional country pub set just off the village green, this is a truly special holiday destination. Set in verdant green countryside, and along the course of the 'Manifold Trail' - which follows the route of the old Leek to Manifold Light Railway - this is an ideal spot for walkers or cyclists. The pretty towns of Ilam and Hartington are close by and provide a wide range of amenities such as shops and cafes, whilst further afield are the pretty market towns of Ashbourne and Leek.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

Self-Catering Reviews

We had a lovely week staying at The Shires which provided a fantastic base to explore the local area.. The house was really well cleaned on arrival and the extra measures in place due Covid were clearly adhered to. The property was exactly what was listed and we found everything we needed was there. The information pack provided was well thought out and put together and contained lots of great info. We would recommend The Shires to anyone wanting to visit the area.

The cottage was good it had everything there.. The only thing was when we arrived there was a musty smell down stairs and I tried to air the cottage and spray it . It took 4 days to get rid of it . I Know it may of been closed because of co19.

A lovely comfortable cottage with spacious rooms.. The cottage is very well equipped and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The cottage is in a lovely location for walkers and it is only a short drive from Ashbourne. The owner was very easy to communicate with and was happy for us to have a large group of my family round for the day. 16 of us fitted in comfortably. Some of the previous reviews were far too negative and focussed on some quite minor issues. When we arrived the cottage was warm and clean. If you pull the electric switch on next to the bath then the jacuzzi jets do work. The cottage wasn't damp but there was a slight smell from the dishwasher. The carpets are absolutely fine apart from a small patch behind the sofa where moths have been having a feast. But you only see that if you go looking for it. We are definitely planning to stay here again as we enjoyed our visit so much.

Cleanliness levels throughout very poor.. Thick dust everywhere. Whole property in major need of updating. Carpet in the bathroom- very unhygienic and God knows when last cleaned. To my children’s dismay, the advertised jacuzzi bath did not work. Carpet in living room so old it was shred to pieces. Very disappointed

Lovely cottage in a pretty village.. Rooms are all surprising large. The host was very helpful in sorting out the configurations of the bedrooms to accommodate my family. Extremely detailed and helpful information supplied both about the cottage and surrounding area.

This cottage was lovely, a real gem, very comfortable and well equipped.. The owners had done everything to make sure we were well informed and our needs catered for. Our first visit to the Peak District, but we will be returning. A relaxing family break.

The location was great for us, nice quiet village with pub, lovely walks from the door. Booked this for a family break was not disappointed, great cottage with beautiful stone features. Very comfy and cosy, the Grandkids loved it, especially the spa batch, brilliant after a good walk. The cottage itself has everything you need supplied, the kitchen was not wanting for anything to prepare meals for the family. The bedrooms were nice and warm and cosy, the beds were very comfortable indeed. Lovely large dining room which seats up to 8 people, and would still not feel cramped, lovely table by the way. Nice to have off road parking as well, not always the case with village properties. Will definitely be re-booking, thanks Nick for a great stay.

We had a marvelous time.. The Shires was a great holiday cottage, warm, well appointed and comfortable. We felt at home immediately. The local area is lovely and we found some great eating places, our favorite being the Bluebell Inn (fabulous food at excellent prices!).

A lovely spacious, family friendly cottage in a beautiful quiet village. The cottage was brilliantly equipped and communication from the owner was excellent prior to departure. What a beautiful part of the country, would love to return!
