October 2020
Perfect cottage in a perfect setting.. We were amazed at how quiet it was. We were greeted by lovely countryside views every morning and enjoyed cuddling up by the wood burner in the evening. The kitchen and bathroom facilities were excellent and the bed was very comfy. We will hopefully book again next year, thank you for a great little escape this weekend, it was just what we needed!

An absolute fantastic stay, suitable for couples seeking a quiet and cosy break in the heart of the Lake District.. The cottage is impeccably presented, with beautiful views across the local hills. Graham and Gay were warm and welcoming, and we were made to feel right at home for our week stay. The location is wonderful with many places of interest within a comfortable driving distance. We will be recommending The Shippen to our friends and family for certain.

We recently had a great holiday at The Shippen and would recommend this cottage. Crosslands is an idyllic, rural hamlet and there are great walks from the doorstep as well as lovely country pubs 5-10 minutes drive away. We were greeted with fresh flowers and scones on the dining table upon arrival and Graham and Gaynor were really welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay. The Shippen is great inside and was very clean, it also has a nice private courtyard area where you can sit outside and eat. Overall a fantastic place to stay.

We had the most wonderful experience at the Shippen.. We stayed for a week in August 2020 - a much needed break from all things covid! From welcome (homemade scones) to goodbye (sending on a necklace we'd left) Graham and Gay were perfect hosts. Always on hand with some local knowledge to improve your experience of the area. If you enjoy walking, cycling and all the Lakes has to offer the location is awesome. We spent the week walking the valley, playing golf at Winderemere GC and mountain biking in Grizedale forest. Graham was happy for us to store our bikes and golf clubs in their garage and was there with some much needed pliers for a quick bike repair. The accomadation is perfect for two. We had our 10 year old labrador with us too - who loved it! The cooking facilities are perfect, we made a home cooked meal every night we stayed. You will not want to leave the bed behind, it is that comfortable! When first arriving it is tricky to find, I wouldn't fancy doing it in the dark. Once you get your bearings it is easy to navigate the roads and Ulverston is not far away with a good size Aldi. We will book the Shippen again.

We had a lovely long weekend at The Shippen.. It's surrounded by countryside that's great for walks and only a 20- 30 minute drive to nearby towns too. It has an enclosed little courtyard which was a nice bonus for our dogs and was overall a very quiet and cosy cottage. Just what we needed!
Miss Dunstan, November 2019
November 2019
It was a peacful location and quite central to all places.. The stairs and spiral staircase needed full attention but they were the only things with any negative. it was a warm and cosy cottage, the woodburner certainly helps on cold nights! Gay & Graham were very helpful with any needs.

August 2019
The cottage was perfect for us, and the Shippen is the first place we have stayed at that we would consider staying at again.. The views were gorgeous even with the rain! The welcome scones & home-made jam were delicious. I know you can take a dogs there, but I would not be sure as the outside stairs and the inside stairs may be difficult for some dogs. Small ones could be carried up and down.

Fabulous cottage in a lovely quiet area, perfect for relaxing with good walks from the door.. The cottage had many additional items as standard, that would normally be classed as 'extras' - these included tea, coffee and Gay's wonderful scones. The welcome from Gay and Graham was lovely and they were extremely helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble, during our stay. The cottage was plenty big enough for the two of us, with a well laid out kitchen, lovely bathroom, the comfiest bed we have ever slept in and a beautiful garden. We have stayed in many cottages in the Lake District but the Shippen is the loveliest one and we can't wait to make a return visit. Many thanks for a lovely holiday Karen and Tony

My wife and I had a lovely stay at Shippen although I left the place with a very sore head after constantly bumping my head against the top of the small doorframes! Also, the spiral staircase was a little tricky to navigate sometimes!
Mrs Sheath, May 2019
May 2019
The Shippen is a real secret little hideaway, which suited me, my husband and our dog down to the ground.. We love this area of the Lake District, and this made our perfect base. Walking made a big part of our holiday, and we were able to find some beautiful walks straight from the door. Crosslands is very quiet and peaceful, with only birdsong to be heard early morning and evening, yet Ulverston is only twenty minutes' drive away; and Greenodd (only ten minutes away) has an axcellent baker, butcher and general store. The cottage owners, who live adjacent to the Shippen, are a delightful couple, who made us most welcome and we were made to feel that, genuinely, nothing was too much trouble to make our holiday enjoyable. We hope very much to return.

Booked here for the Christmas week for wife and myself on arrival we were greeted by a friendly lady called Brenda who helps out and house sits who took us in to the shipped. It's laid out to a high standard with lots of little extras the fire was ready to be life only we were a little early so only had to put a match to it. Much bigger then I thought with a beautiful spiral stairs going down to a little hall and bedroom with was truly good standard top quality bedding and furniture also off to another door step down to the bathroom door wow beautiful bathroom. Just love the way this place has used all the old latch doors and a few beams too stunning x. We've never gone away over Christmas before but truly glad we booked here so peaceful day n night. Brenda what a true star very friendly and helpful thank you Brenda miss you already true star xx Sorry we didn't get to meet owners but your cottage is beautiful and all the little extras and to meet ozzey n the cats gorgeous x thank you for the cake we truly it, with our afternoon cuppa x we wish you the very best for the new year xx Chris and Dee xxx

Wonderful cottage very cosy and a lot of thought has gone into dressings and fixings of this place , its so peaceful with veiws accross the fields which was stunning on a frosty morning.. The warm welcome went along way too as the fruit cake and Christmas decorated tree. Plenty of hot water and log burner with basket of logs as a welcome x only fault if you were to need internet on a work away type relax it's very up and down not reliable as it's Ethernet seem to work sparingly. Otherwise we really enjoyed the cottage and surrounding area.

I booked this cottage to literally escape fireworks as one of my dog’s is terrified.. The listing said remote and that was accurate. What an amazing little gem this cottage is. When I arrived I was met by Gay and shown around, it’s far more beautiful than the photos depict. Stunning location and views, peaceful and quiet and the biggest comfiest bed I”d ever slept in! I had the best few nights sleep I’ve ever had. All the furnishings and equipment are of a very high standard and it’s sootlessky clean. Gay and Graham were always on hand if you needed anything and they are so friendly. There is no phone signal and the internet is patchy but that was no issue for me. I will definitely be staying in this idyllic cottage again.

August 2018
Hosts met us with homemade scones and jam, which were really tasty.. Cottage was very clean and tidy. Very well equipped with all you need. Gay and Graham were really lovely and hospitable and so helpful. My wife and I both being animal lovers, so we really enjoyed the company of thier pets, especially Ossie who is such a character. The Shippen cottage is an ideal place for tranquil and relaxed vacation away from a city buzz. Be aware, you won't hear your phone at all, as for mobile signal you need to walk up a hill for a few minutes but wouldn't say that was a bad thing! PS Sorry we forgot to write in your book before we left, it completely escaped both our minds.

August 2018
The cottage was beautiful, just the right size for a couple.. It was well equipped and cosy, with good quality furnishings, a lovely bathroom and the kitchen had everything we could need. The views from the main living room were lovely, looking across fields to a hillside and it was incredibly peaceful. The owners made us feel very welcome and were always interested in what we had been up to, making suggestions for places to visit. There was a television but we never watched it - there was always plenty to keep us occupied. Cannot recommend this place highly enough and hope to visit again.

If you really want to get away from it all, you could go here and switch off the world for days.. The upside down layout means that you have stunning views out on to the countryside from the living area..and not forgetting a really comfortable bed!

Just spent a lovely week in this charming little cottage in Crosslands, 5 miles south of Hawkshead, in the Lake District. The hosts, Graham and Gaynor Jarvis made us feel really welcome and the home baked scones left for us were delicious. Lovely walks straight out the door and onto the fells were amazing, our dog loved it too. Nice wood burner for chilly evenings made the cottage so cosy, can't wait to go back.

November 2016
Although only at the cottage for 2 nights we thought it was a lovely, well kept base to stay.. Comfortable bed and tasteful decor added to quality towels and crockery was a highlight. The owners were really pleasant and left us some homemade scones, butter and jam. The location is quite isolated with no shops nearby or even local pub so guests do need to be equipped or prepared to travel. The winding roads also make it awkward to find, particularly at night. We will definitely stay there again.

The beautiful scenery as you walk out the front door was amazing, so many lovely walks and because the cottage was dog friendly we were able to enjoy it with our four legged friend making the holiday even more delightful. The property owners are very kind and incredibly helpful. The house has fantastic heating so the cottage was warm throughout the day. The nearest shop is rather far so to anyone travelling over I would recommend taking your own food. I would rate our week a 10/10.
