The Reading Rooms Self-Catering

Holiday home
The Reading Rooms in Oughtershaw is a detached riverside cottage in the heart of the National Park. The cottage has a mezzanine reading area on the first floor but everything else is at ground floor level - there are two king-size double bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen with dining area and a sitting room with woodburning stove. Outside is off road parking for two cars, and a riverside garden with furniture. The Reading Rooms offers good walking from the doorstep, including along the Dales Way, which passes through Oughtershaw, making this an ideal base for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire.

Area
Located at the foot of Buckden Pike, and close to the head of Upper Wharfedale, the idyllic village of Buckden is the perfect place to start exploring the wonderful scenery and pretty towns of this magnificent Dale. Much of Upper Wharfedale is owned by the National Trust and is composed of dry-stone walls and barns, important flower-rich hay meadows and valleyside woodland. Renowned for its walking routes, this region is home to the famous Dales Way, which passes close to Buckden Pike. The village itself is comprised of a cluster of stone built cottages and houses set around a traditional green. The village is also home to the famous 'Buck Inn' - a Georgian coaching pub that retains much of its old charm.

Region
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Amenities

Self-Catering Reviews

September 2020
Just spent a week at the cottage with 2 dogs.. The location is remote so a long haul to shops, pubs etc but that's not a problem as long as you're prepared with food supplies etc. Lovely position on the river and the enclosed, walled garden was great with the dogs. Lots of walks on your doorstep and some lovely places to visit. We went to Semerwater, Aysgarth Falls, Westburton, Kettlewell and Lynton. The cottage is well equipped and spotlessly clean. A very enjoyable break added to by some lovely weather. Will definitely return and highly recommend.

Fantastic sheltered location for peace and quiet with ready access to lots of walking and not far to travel to areas of interest in the Dales.. Our visit in January was definitely wellie weather just go prepared for what the weather does, we had everything, sunshine, rain, wind, fog, snow and ice. Lovely returning to warm cosy cottage with lots of space to dry clothes and the dog.Glad of washing machine and constant hot water in the shower. Little light pollution so when nights clear stars are amazing.

A beautiful cosy cottage in a stunning location.. Luckily, we had fab weather (freezing cold but sunny), so our dogs, and us, were able to take many long walks in the amazingly beautiful Dales surroundings. The beck at the bottom of the garden (walled with a gate, so the beck can be accessed from the garden) was a bonus, meant we could wash the dogs there after our tramps! We loved our stay, so peaceful, and were sad to leave. I would thoroughly recommend this cottage for countryside lovers and dog owners! Thank you

I think rustic charms of this lovely cottage would be better appreciated in the warmer, sunnier, drier weather.. Had we gone earlier in the year when it was warmer I think the holiday would have exceeded our expectations.

The Reading Rooms cottage is the best cottage I have ever stayed in.. Absolutely fabulous. So good in fact that we have already booked to return next year. It really is a home from home. The area is fantastic and it was a tough choice between sitting on the patio and watching the world go by or exploring the area.

The Reading Rooms was a most relaxing place to stay.. It was very clean and well equipped with some lovely walks straight from the door. There was a lovely welcome pack of tea bags, milk and biscuits, and the bed was exceedingly comfortable and we slept like logs every night listening to the burbling brook just outside the window. Would like to return next year.

Garden was well cared for and river was fenced off so didn't have to worry about the dog going walkabout.. Cottage was warm and cosy. I definitely could have stayed an extra week there given the chance. :)

The cottage is in a exceptionally beautiful quiet location but the inside could be better with more kitchen equipment like sauspans, bin liners, washing up liquid, hand wash as there is no shop nearby to pop and get some.. We also had to clean the dishwasher before we could use it as there was a lot of food just lying in there. But having said that we really enjoyed it and the weather was good as well and we would go back again sometime in the future.

We took our 2 dogs here at the end of September for a week and had a relaxing time in a lovely cottage. It has everything you need and they leave you milk, tea and biscuits which is a lovely touch. To wake up each morning to this remote beautiful place is great. Stream at the end of the garden. Garden is enclosed though for dogs which is helpful. We went many walks from here and it is the best area around for scenery. Take everything with you as shops are a drive away. No mobile signal but a phone box for emergencies, Wifi signal good. Would definitely return.

A lovely cottage, in a rural hamlet, quite remote but within 6 miles of Hawes. Enjoyed exploring the stream and local walks. We enjoyed the walking down the valley around Hubberholme, Star Botton and Kettlewell. Enjoyed cycling to Hawes on the road over Butter Tubs, some steep climbs and good descents from the cottage for the more experienced rider! Mucker a lovely stop for a coffee. Much enjoyed.

Even better than we hoped for, the property is beautifully presented, I wanted to walk on the Dales Way and this was well placed. We looked for somewhere quiet and off the beaten track, cottage was perfect. Would definitely book again. Only downside? No public transport or local taxis, so you will need a car if you want to go anywhere apart from relax locally, which is what we wanted to do.

Excellent position of cottage. Great situation to explore Dales, and of course, Wensleydale Creamery.

The Reading Rooms are in a particularly isolated location enabling us to experience the peace and quiet of the Yorkshire Dales, while at the same time providing an excellent base for daily walking in the surrounding countryside. The facilities provided were of a high standard. Two double rooms enabled us to spend quality time with our friends, with enough space for us to enjoy each others company. The hamlet of Oughtershaw was close enough to Hawes to enable us to collect anything we had forgotten to bring with us, and to dine out in the evening if we felt disinclined to cook for ourselves.

It was a lovely cottage in a beautiful, peaceful, idyllic spot up towards the head of the Dale. Plenty of parking. Loved the solid fuel stove in the lounge, but also nice to have central heating as it was quite chilly outside. Just love the feeling of remoteness. Great area for road cycling.

The cottage was wonderful. The location was central to the national park, and there was a good deal of information in the cottage on things to do and see (which we relied upon quite heavily as first timers to the national park). It was obvious from walking in for the first time that this was going to be a comfortable residence. We had all amenities and more in the kitchen, and for an evening there was a lovely sitting room/lounge with television.
